  • @Corakken
    @Corakken 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +30

I've 28F and started playing chess when I was 10. My first chess competition, age 13, I got accused of only being there to distract boys by an adult man. I was a shy kid. I didn't draw attention to myself (and even if I did, I was a child, and that shouldn't matter). It wasn't light hearted either, it was an accusation.
I've had men in chess clubs straight up sexually assault me more than once. The sexual harassment happens at almost every club I've ever been to. I've been met with people who won't play me, who get pissed if they lose to me, and who do not think I have anything of value to add to discussions about chess at every single club I've ever been to. All of them.
Sexism in chess is a huge huge problem and a lot of people think it's not because they don't see or experience it because they aren't women. There is so much progress that needs to be made in attitudes towards women in chess and elsewhere in the world, and the only way that happens is by men calling out other men when they see bad behavior. It should not be normal to see people talking about women this way. People who do so deserve to be called out, shunned, or even outright kicked from the group if they cannot get it together.
Thank you Levy for taking the lead here and calling this behavior out in such a direct, no nonsense way. I've honestly never heard a man stand up for women in chess like you did here and that is so valuable to me and also to the people who look up to you who are participating in that behavior. If you ever see this, thank you and you gained a fan for life ❤️

I very much appreciated Levy's talk about this. It seems like it's a confluence of two major problems, one with chess and one with society, and not enough is being done to combat it. (In fact, it feels like more and more people are actively fighting _against_ decency and compassion...)
I'm curious how you feel about the women's titles in chess. I get what they're trying to do, but after nearly half a century, basically two entire generations, it doesn't seem like it's worked.
With a lack of clear efficacy, I'm left with a fairly sour taste in my mouth about the entire concept of women's titles in chess... though I'm only empathizing, imagining what it might feel like, from my perspective as a male and also nowhere near good enough for titles of any kind to be relevant to me personally, I imagine it would likely feel pretty patronizing and belittling. I've tried to imagine how I'd feel and what I'd do if I were a talented female chess player... would I go for a WIM or WGM title for the prestige it does have, even knowing that a lot of people are likely to prepend a "just" in front of them in their minds? Or would I hold out for the full, non-gender-specific titles, even knowing I might never get them?
Ultimately I'm not really sure how to feel. I can't have the feelings I'm imagining for myself, so instead I can only ask: how do _you_ feel about them? Are you glad there's a separate but definitely not equal path of titles for female players? Or does the whole idea feel as nebulously and vaguely cognitively dissonant as I imagine it might?

Hi Gotham. I don't think I've ever commented on one of your videos before, but I'm a long time viewer. I often recommend you to a lot of newer chess players (not necessarily to learn about chess, but rather to develop and grow their passion and love for the game and the community). You are a wonderful influence and entertaining individual.
I'd just like to thank you for the first five minutes of this video. I was watching another youtube video recently where during the game, a woman played an incredible, beautiful move which essentially won the game on the spot. And like a gangster (as you would say), she played it, got up from the board, and walked away to grab something to drink. I immediately had to scroll to the comments to see what people had to say because I felt like it was an awesome moment. To my delight, I found out many/most of the comments were timestamping when it had happened and I thought I had found comraderie with my fellow chess players. That was short lived, however, as to my dismay they were all timestamping the moment due to her butt being in view for half of a second as she stood up.
It's absolutely disgusting and it's absolutely the reason why fewer women play chess. Just two days ago I was teaching a new player how to play chess. The next day, his brother was making fun of him for being "beaten by a girl", as if gender has anything to do with chess ability. Luckily I am a strong enough player to put him in his place when the brother came to challenge me as well, but comments like these show that there is still very much in the way of bigotry in the world. I can only hope the newest generation of chess players can be more accepting and respectful.

I have never really understood the bias against and exclusion of women in chess. In my second chess tournament ever I lost to a girl who was the same age as me but obviously a lot stronger, being a 1600 elo player while I was only 1300 at the time. I thought nothing of it as she was obviously stronger than me, and probably even a little underrated. It's justt a stupid cycle: Women experience toxicity in men dominant spaces > Women in general try less or don't even bother because of the toxicity they experience (who wants to dedicate their lives to a game with a comunnity that doesn't respect them?) > People start being toxic and saying that women are bad at chess in general because they don't have as many achievement as men > Women experience toxicity. It just feeds itself.
And they have the audacity to bring up thing like ''genetics'' or some bullshit when they're part of the reason we have less women that are masters in chess. Being an elite player is already hard enough, imagine if part of the community was also against you and the number of men playing the game is just a lot higher. Of course, less women are getting to the top. It's just statistics.

What Levy said has already been said a thousand times, and it will be said more in the future, and nothing will change. That's the way the internet works. Nothing will change the behavior of those people, especially when they go anonymous like that, what should be taught more is for people to have a thicker skin. Yeah it’s almost always garbage. People desperate for engagement so they post the most outrageous nonsense

The internet is the worst. Anonymity has given people the access and capability to show their true selves. And God its ugly.

Back in 2019 I challenged myself to not leave a negative comment on TH-cam for one year. I bungled in the 11 month twice, but kept at it
I’ve accomplished my goal. My goal was to get out of the habit of leaving negative vitriol filled responses. Now I can leave leave positive, often humorous, comments when I like something & I can just walk away without saying anything.
It’s a good feeling to not feel obligated to waste time with unpleasant people or those who feel racial slurs are the highest form of discourse.
I’d encourage those who feel similarly to consider acting likewise.
    Cheers!

I rarely comment here, but thanks for standing up against all the nonsense. There are so many amazing women in the chess space and they deserve respect, and it's a credit to you that you're using your platform to promote that.
