    The night Casey Jones died another engineer was scheduled for that shift. The engineer called in sick and Casey Jones volunteered. That night my great grandfather survived and Casey Jones became a legend. Casey Jones left a widow behind. She remarried sometime later but continued to wear the ring Casey Jones gave her. Passed from mother to daughter, my wife, the great granddaughter of Casey’s widow, wears that ring. What is interesting is, my wife and I did know put the two stories, and our lives were so entwined until after two years of marriage.

    My favourite thing about Sam is how he’s always amazing to his fans. He tries so hard not to offend anyone, to reply to everyone’s comments, and listens to his fans requests.

    Sorry for this Sam but I’d like to correct you: 382 wasn’t destroyed in the wreck but was repaired and returned to service. However, there was a rumour going around that she had became cursed and missed her old engineer, and so kept derailing and misbehaving so much that they were forced to retire her. Heck, even when they were about to tow her to the scrapyard, she allegedly RAN OVER one of the crew members tasked for the job.
    So yeah, sorry for this. Great video btw!

      How do these lyrics relate to the theme song of the Casey Jones TV show? What I can remember of it from 50+ years ago is both similar and different, with lines like "Number 1's his engine, Casey Jones his name" and "When you hear the tootin' of the whistle, It's Casey at the throttle of the Cannonball Express." Oh, and whatever type of loco the CE was supposed to be, it suffered from a heck of a lot of wheel slip! Every time the engine started or stopped, they showed a clip where the wheels were either slipping or locked up! I know It's just Hollywood, but I'm not sure I'd want to ride on that train... 😨y

    Whilst Casey Jones was loved by the company, for his "timekeeping" skills, allegedly the fitters, at the workshops, weren't all that enamoured with him - thrashing his loco to bits and wearing out parts faster than other engineers were doing on the same 4-6-0s.... Whilst it's a sad story, in the end, it's a good lesson that driving hard and fast eventually ends in disaster...
    And whilst everyone remembers the A4 that was destroyed by a HX bomb, in York North MPD, everyone seemingly forgets the poor B16 that was sat beside her and also written off by the blast.

      To be fair to Mr. Jones, the primary cause of the accident wasn't his 'speeding' but rather a screw-up by another train. It for some reason needed to be moved onto a siding. Only, it didn't quite fit so that a few of its cars remained on the mainline. Jones' fast driving had by that time nearly compensated for delays earlier in the run, so that his train was basically where it was supposed to be when that other train materialized on the track ahead. It was the other train that shouldn't have been where it was when it was. As I recall, there 'was' some contention over whether or not the other train had placed warning devices along the track.

      Mr Jones should have been concentrating on his train and his driving if I crashed my car I couldn't blame a broken down car that I hit for the crash IT'S THE DRIVER WHO WAS AT FAULT!!!!

      @@SamsTrains The difference is Gadwall was only wrecked once. 382 was rebuilt after the crash and was involved in three more fatal accidents. The IC finally scrapped her when crews would refuse to run her believing that she was cursed.

      I initially assumed it may have been that 382 and the Gadwell were both capable of speeds over 100mph, but after some extensive digging, the ten wheelers from around the turn of the century in the states were rarely capable of such speeds

Once again Sam, another wonderful review! Casey Jones has always been such an interesting figure to me. His tragic demise right at the turn of the century has become, arguably, one of the most famous railroad stories of all time. Keep up the good work Sam!     Casey Jones Village in Jackson, Tennessee, has Casey's house, open as a museum, and a locomotive, and a train shop. The hotel consists of several train cars. There should be pictures online.

      I too remember the series. We didn't even have a TV set back then, I had to go to a friend's house whose parents did have a TV and something of a talking point even in the late 60s. I can still remember the theme tune music, if not the words.

    His name was John Luther Jones ( Casey was a nickname given to him because he once lived in Cayce, Kentucky and there was another John Jones who also worked for the Railroad so to distinguish between the two he went by Casey ). Some historians tell that 382 wasn't the engine Casey normally drove & and he was filling in for the engineer who was sick that normally drove 382, its been told that more accidents happened with locomotive 382 after it was rebuilt from Casey's accident, to verify more research needed ; anyway, enjoyed the video and thanks.

      The bit about 382 is a bit of a combination of two details: Casey spent most of his time driving a different loco, number 638, but he had been assigned to 382 three months before the accident when he was transferred to passenger service and moved to Memphis. However it is true that on the night of the accident the train was supposed to be driven by another engineer who was too sick to work that day, and after the crash 382 had numerous other accidents, some of them fatal, leading to rumors that the locomotive had become cursed or jinxed.

    6:40 the locomotive was actually rebuilt multiple times, involved in several more wrecks, and was then scrapped in the 1950s.

    I'm so glad to finally see a review of a rivarossi locomotive, and yes I would definitely love to see more reviews like this. in fact, I've mentioned an AHM/Rivarossi locomotive many times before in the comments I'd like to see reviewed, the Virginia & Truckee Railroad #21 "J.W. Bowker" 2-4-0 tender locomotive

    Do you remember the Walt Disney short called “The Brave Engineer”? It involves the Casey Jones story where he’s late and he has to deliver one of the packages to the station and he worries about being late so he had his train running as fast as he could although there was some difficulties along the way such as a flooded railroad track, a cow on the line, a lady on the line with an evil man, a dynamite on the bridge, bad guys attacking him, the train falling apart, and especially the part where the train (the one that’s shown on screen) that killed him during the wreck and I believe it was a double header train too. The conductor jumped off the train but Casey Jones didn’t and got involved in a huge wreck. But in the Disney short, he didn’t die, he survived and made it to the station with just one package. That’s all that I remember from that Disney short. I’ve watched it multiple times as a kid and it was a great Disney short! 😃👍

    Please show more vintage locos. The Rivarossi Casey Jones Illinois Central No. 382 is the closest to the model loco I received for Christmas in 1970 but which I lost in my move from Washington, DC, to Santa Fe, NM, in 2003 (I'm still not over it). Thanks to your videos, I'm determining the vintage steam engine in O or HO scale to replace the one I lost. I enjoy most all your videos. Don't stop.

    I have this exact same locomotive in HO scale, except it as been made by Rivarossi for AHM it has two engineers in the cab either side of the motor and a light in the cab, runs very nicely and I believe it is quite expensive to buy one I got mine in an estate sale lot. Well done with the presentation and the Casey Jones history Sam

    I bought one of these recently (Partially damaged and with some bids replaced) and it has very rapidly become a favorite loco, particularly because I cannot resist 1880s-1900s locos specifically for their combination of shiny brass bits and more classy lines. They're the sort of the stylistic transition between the 2-10-0 you looked at and that Jupiter 4-4-0.

    Simeon Webb, his fireman died july 15th 1957....There were basically 3 other trains on sidings ahead of the CJ, the one they slammed into, the caboose was hanging onto the mainline with redlights visible....Cool loco and a legend at that. Those huge 6ft drivers and other features makes this steamer a sexy beast! Every manufacturer should be re-releasing these. It's shame you cant find very many of them except for evilbay...Thanx for the review Sam.Cheerz!

    Good ole’ 382! Probably the most famous train wreck involved steam locomotive ever know. This reminded me of a big trip I went on back in 2009, and we stopped, in Jackson Tennessee, at the Casey Jones Village and Museum. The train on display was painted up and numbered like Casey’s train, but it was actually NOT the actual 382. The real 382 sadly got scrapped, and another Ten Wheeler was dressed up to look like it. The most noticeable difference between the real 382 and the dressed up ten wheeler I saw, was the real 382 had a raised middle section on it’s cab roof, while the the other didn’t. Just thought I’d point that out. Once again, Sam, another amazing review! Cheers to you, and be safe out there!

    Rivarossi also made an O scale model of this loco;
    Point of Interest: the newly formed FS ( Italian state railways) 1905, acquired Baldwin 4-6-0 and 2-8-0 as a start to Standardizing Loco Designs. Locos prior to 1905 were from several different companies, with German, French and Italian design Locos.
    A similar Baldwin 4-6-0 in 3'6" for QGR. Was delivered in 1904.

    Being both an American and model train enthusiast I can say Sam did a good job of giving a brief history on Casey. Fortunately I was able to visit Casey’s museum/home in Jackson, Tennessee. It is a great place to visit and have a lot of knowledge about him and his fateful night. One thing I do need to mention is that 382’s fate did not end on that night. Instead, she was put back into service but after her wreck she continued to have fatal wrecks. Finally, time moved on and she was eventually retired and was deemed “cursed” after her first wreck with Casey Jones.     I think it’s cool to check out classic stuff now and then, we can’t expect detail to be as good as today. I’m Canadian so its also cool seeing locomotives that could have been seen here back in the day.     Casey actually got associated with 382 during a Wolds fair, he was chosen to drive this brand new locomotive, bringing passengers too and from the Fair. He fell in love with the 10 wheeler loco, Afterwards he convinced his superiors to basically give him this engine. allowing him lone use of 382, even allowing him to drive it all the way back to the main I. C. R. R. yard from the fair. He spent a while on 382, even having a custom whistle made so people would know it was him coming down the tracks.
    It's a shame what happened to him, and 382.

    Great review of this relic! I recently picked one of these up and was able to perform some maintenance on it. To remove the base plate you take out the screws then slide the plate to the front of the locomotive and it's off!

    Love the vintage stuff. Being new to the hobby this year, I've missed an awful lot, this helps fill the gaps. Also, being an American, I like your point of view on both American rail locos and British OO gauge stuff! My introduction to the hobby was winning an Andrew Barclay from Hattons when they were here in the states in January, and I've since built up a good collection of HO and OO stock, a lot of the British stuff on your recommendation, thanks very much!

    Great loco, great video! Most of my collection are older Athearn and Rivarossi stock, so I definitely have a soft spot for them.
    And if I had to take a bet, the similarity is that both 382 and Gadwall were both involved in well known accidents, and scrapped.

      the real 382 was scrapped in 1935, she was rebuilt after the wreck. the Casey Jones Museum's 382 was a former Clinchfield Railroad locomotive painted/restored to look like IC 382

      I've learnt it this morning by a mail from RoS. What the blast the main manufacturers are doing right now ? Bachmann and Hattons are crossed, and the later does not sale anything more than his end of series and second hand from Bachmann, and now RoS and Hornby... What's next ? Oxford Rail telling Kernow Model Centre to go duck themselves ? The Model Centre refusing to sell Dapol for some corny reason ?
      Sorry to be so economic, but it is the worst moment for quibbles like that. Model trains will not be a priority in the next monthes due to the Covid crisis, and if manufactuers draw a middle finger up to the retailers, and to their customers through them, the backlash will be no sales at all, in an everyone-lose-nobody-wins situations.

      @@SamsTrains I think it is because, like Hattons, RoS is a retailer that manufactures rolling stock better than the two big ones (Bachmann and Hornby). RoS have an interesting Terrier incoming, which is chasing on the same ground as the model from Hornby, cheaper but good without being extraordinary. That might explain why Hornby had slammed the door after a tantrum with RoS.

    4.28 Bogie tenders were pretty much standard on American locos from the start, for the same reason they were fitted to passenger and freight stock -- American track was cheaply and poorly laid, with rails as light as possible, so bogie suspension was more or less essential to keep the trains on the track at all.
    As to the 'gold' handrails -- brass wire, being softer and more easily formed than nickel-silver, was standard on American models back in the last century, and US modellers were used to it.
    The plate on the valve chest is a builder's plate, or at least is supposed to represent one. It just says 'Rogers', which I suppose is as good as you can expect for the 1970s.
    Another excellent review of an interesting and classic model.

    I would love to see more vintage reviews. I grew up with grandfather's HO trains from the 60's and 70's, so they bring back a lot of memories (though we never had this one, I remember seeing her on the back of a lot of AHM boxes, AHM was Rivarossi's US distributor back then). I also recently received Hornby's centennary book, it would be neat to see some of the models from back then in action.

    If you want the entire and most accurate version of Casey's story, here it is:
    Jones, Casey, 1864-1900, American locomotive engineer celebrated in ballad and song, probably b. Jordan, Fulton co., Ky. His real name was John Luther Jones, but at the age of 17 he went to Cayce, Ky., and there he was employed as a telegraph operator; from the name of the town he was given the nickname "Casey." In 1888 he entered the service of the Illinois Central RR as a locomotive fireman and soon (1890) was promoted to engineer. He was famous among railroad men for his boast that he always brought his train in on schedule and for his peculiar skill with a locomotive whistle. Given the "crack" assignment of driving the Cannon Ball express from Memphis, Tenn., to Canton, Miss.--a particularly dangerous run on which several accidents had occurred--Casey Jones was determined to bring the overdue train in on time but met with disaster. On the morning of Apr. 30, 1900, confronted with a stationary freight train ahead of his speeding locomotive at Vaughan, Miss., he ordered his fireman to jump. He applied the brakes, and although the Cannon Ball crashed and Jones was killed, the passengers were saved. A fellow railroad worker, Wallace Saunders, soon composed a popular ballad about him; one version of it, Casey Jones, was published by T. Lawrence Siebert and Eddie Newton. Monuments commemorating Jones stand at Cayce, Ky., and Jackson, Tenn. He was buried at Jackson, Tenn.
    He was a good man, and the greatest engineer west of the Mississippi.

    Fascinating video, Sam. Quite a delight to see that Casey Jones is a household name in any rail enthusiast's life, much like Big Boy and Flying Scotsman.
    Casey's full name was Jonathan Luther Jones, and a fun fact about the 382 is that it was nicknamed "Cannonball".
    A few quick facts about his infamous wreck- Jones threw his locomotive into reverse, dropping the speed from 75 miles per hour to 35 miles per hour before colliding into the train stuck on his line. Before his infamous last run, three trains occupied the same piece of track that his passenger train was on- a double-headed freight, and another freight train (longer than the double-headed freight). The length of both trains exceeded the passing track and, while one was being cut in parts to allow the trains to move about and pass each other, an air hose broke on the longer freight, thus leaving some of its cars blocking the line.
    Amazing to know that one engineer's quick thinking led him to reversing the drive wheels and blasting whistle would save lives, and leave him immmortalized in railroad history.

    Love the vintage stuff. You might like to look into the AHM/ Rivarossi Indiana Harbor Belt 0-8-0 switcher. It was available in O, HO and N scales. The O scale version also came as a kit with an optional motorizing kit, as did the O scale Casey Jones and the 4-4-0.     Rivarossi did an HO parallel boilered LMS Scot which I'd love to see a review of. They were pretty easy to find back in the day and came with some gorgeous matching LMS coaches. I never bought one because it was in HO (3.5mm/ft) and was really undersized next to 00 stock. I had a mate who had a Rivarossi Big Boy which was a monster - even in HO

    aaaaahhh getting into H0 scale i see! Looks a bit small compared to the figurines, but if you ever plan on building a seperate H0 layout, there is a company called Preiser from Germany that makes H0 people and accesories. in terms of detail, it's not bad for an old lady, but the new 'high end' H0 locomotives are even better. as for the motor inside the cab, these days they can indeed fit compact ones into the smokebox, but with older designs the tender is actually a good place to put it.I have a Baureihe 39 from Fleischmann, (Fleischmann 4139) and it has the motor inside the coal tender too. absolute beauty.... sooooo much power as well, not as much as Trix locomotives but still a lot. Hope you give one of those a try as well, i think you'll like them a lot!

    I definitely like seeing vintage models, I would be down to see more. Also, nice to see those Orient Express coaches by the stairs get some use, I've been wondering about that rolling stock.
    Quick fun fact: several train crash songs have been sung about Casey Jones, the most famous might arguably be Johnny Cash's cover, though there's certainly a lot to choose from.

    As someone who has owned a few of these, they are pretty hardy locomotives, with 1 flaw. If you run them often, they will need to be quartered a lot. Also, a bit of correction on your history. 382s history does not end at the Casey Jones wreck. After the wreck it was rebuilt, but it was known as a cursed locomotive and was involved in a few more accidents, if I remember right she killed 3 more engineers before she was scrapped in 1935, after 37 years of service, the same age that Casey Jones was when he perished.

    As an American, I remember the "Casey Jones" Ten Wheeler was sold under the AHM brand here. When I was growing up, I would read the model railroad magazines wishing for several of their offerings. Today, I have a Bachmann HO Ten Wheeler and 4-4-0 American with DCC and sound. I love them!

    12:45 the problem with a lot of Rivarossi / AHM locos is the vertical can motor which tends to flick the loco sideways momentarily before giving any any forward or backward motion. Slow running is poor because the gears have to differentiate on more planes. I only have three Rivarossi AHM loco's (all diesel) ... the DB V232 and two KM4000 in Southern Pacific and Rio Grande liveries.

    Cast Jone real name was John Luther Jones. Casey had completed his assigned run, when dispatch “ask him” to take this extra run which was behind schedule. The reason railroads were so concerned about schedules at that time is because of the lucrative mail contracts. Now if memory serves, Casey had already reached his “hours of service” limits when he took this run. He had made up a lot of the lost time when he came upon a freight that hadn’t cleared a switch and the caboose and a few freight cars hadn’t cleared, as the train was longer than the siding. Under normal conditions, “saw-by” would have been done. This maneuver requires the train to pull forward to clear the switch, then the priority train moves up on the main line, clearing the switch. Then the “inferior” train then backs up, clearing the second switch. The priority train then pulls forward on the main and continues on its way. The way I understand the accident, was the freight was an “extra”. You can consult wikipedia, or do a Google search on the wreck. A very sad side note is the similarities between the Casey Jones wreck and the wreck “Old 97” also an off schedule mail train. Look it up, I think you might enjoy the stories behind these two American railroad legends. In closing, the “Casey Jones” locomotive was marketed here in the US by AHM, the model was available as an rtr HO model as you have here. It was also marketed as an O scale rtr, powered kit and as an unpowered static kit, there was a “power kit” available to convert the static model into a running locomotive.

    Great review! Always wanted one of these locos. There's actually a bit more to the story of 382 - after the wreck, it was rebuilt and went back into service, but was involved in several more fatal accidents. Eventually, the train crews started believing it was haunted by Casey's ghost, and refusing to run it. In the 1930s, it was finally sent to the scrapyard, and on the way there, it derailed and killed another crew member. Maybe it really was haunted...

    One more vote for vintage reviews! You might consider looking at the 60s - 70s Mantua steam engines - things you like: 5 pole motors, proper brass bearings, detailed running gear, all metal. Plenty of them on ebay US.

    I'd love to see more classic locos like this, I've had pretty good luck with rivarossi myself.
    I managed to snag a rivarossi big boy a few years ago(the version with the gray smoke box and fire box) and I've been very happy with it. It's my best puller (as it should be given itssize), it can handle my 18 inch curves, and it looks really good for its age. The only issue I have with it is that it also has the same cab problem this loco has, luckily the enormous tender does a pretty good job of covering that up.

    Sometimes nostalgia is more important than detail. As someone that grew up in the area that the Illinois Central Railroad operated, I've always loved the Casey Jones story. I own that exact engine and I love it.

    I know Disney named the circus train in Dumbo, Casey Junior after Casey Jones. The train in the film even runs on the Illinois Central Railroad same as this, and it has some subtle visual similarities although that's likely a coincidence, it was based on a different locomotive. It was always one of my favourite fictional characters growing up, would love to see it released as a HO/OO scale train pack someday, even if it's unlikely. To my knowledge it's only been produced in G Scale in 2000ish but it seems to be exceedingly rare. Regardless though, it's great to see his name live on, whether through films or songs or stories. Thanks for the great video, always nice to learn more

    You can adapt your orient express coaches to CP coaches because in the old days of the Sud-Express (Lisbon/Estoril==>Paris) made by CIWL pass the service to CP including the cariages they don't run anymore but still on MNF (Museu Nacional Ferroviário) and at the Entroncamento depot in pristine conditions.Good video, Cheers Sam!!

    Gadwall and 382: Both destroyed and commemorated for their existence and involvement within history.
    In laymen's turns: They were destroyed, but not forgotten.
    Now dat is honestly a really neat ten-wheeler. Simplistic, but that adds to charm of it, like the Mehano 4-4-0. Good video man!

    There's something about American steam locomotives that is so fascinating. Maybe it's the cowcatcher or the cab? I absolutely love it. That bronze part on the cylinder says Rogers which is the locomotive manufacturer. I think it's a bit expensive for 100 pounds but feeling the nostalgia and the condition it's probably worth it ;) I have watched a cartoon called "The Brave Engineer" which I think was made by Disney and was inspired of that accident. Seeing this model brings back some memories of the sad accident. R.I.P John Luther Jones. Great vid as always Sam👍

    Wow that was great fun Sam . I really like American locos and was big fan as a kid of the Casey Jones TV series . Yes bring it on and give us some more American and European stuff like this of any vintage any time soon . Who knows you might even be running some vintage Hornby Dublo 2 rail ( or 3 rail ) die-cast locos too . On a happy positive note for me and speaking of die-cast Hornby Dublo ... surprise , surprise i received my order for the Hornby 2020 Limited Edition of the " Duchess Of Atholl " . I have not ran it yet as i am still recovering from the shock of actually getting it . So meantime i have just been staring at it in wonder and amazement ! A new die-cast loco after all these years and i hope Hornby produce more in future in a not so limited edition .

I think you will like the screen title shots. In my opinion they still are great children's TV even today for any lover of railways and model trains of any age. I saw every episode as a kid . First shown on the BBC in 1958 . All onboard for the Cannonball Express . I always also watched the BBC series Railway Roundabout which i am sure some subscribers here will remember . Also if you type in on TH-cam The Ballad of Casey Jones there is a posting in tribute to the 119th Anniversary of the death of John Luther ( Casey ) Jones posted by Great Lakes Rail Productions filmed using a model railway and sung by Johnny Cash . I am sure you and others will enjoy that one .

    The 382, despite being the engine that killed Casey Jones, is still a very ornate, beautiful locomotive. Too bad it isn’t dcc ready or dcc equipped. Otherwise I would have already bought one. The 382 was a beautiful engine in real life, and the Rivarossi model represents that very well. She was actually recovered after the wreck and continued working until 1935, when she was totaled in another wreck. I actually got to see a 1-for-1 replica of Casey’s original whistle. It was a boiler-tube 6 chime whistle (a chime whistle that plays 6 notes) made of brass and cast steel. It had a very beautiful sound to it, and it played a chord similar to a Nathan 6 chime.

    While 382 was horribly damaged in the wreck, the engine was actually rebuilt and continued to serve the Illinois Central into the 1930s, but as a hoodoo engine that killed a few more crewmembers in subsequent wrecks.

    some additional info:
    IC class 371 4-6-0, built by Rogers in 1898.. She was one of 44 in her class (IC 371-400) and they were among the IC's more powerful locomotives at the time. The 382 was almost Jones' personal engine, it was one he was assigned to the most and one he was most comfortable with. Because of that, he was able to have a custom whistle. After the Vaughan Wreck in 1900, the 382 was actually rebuilt and put back into service, but was thought to be "cursed". Over the next 37 years, the locomotive was involved in smaller incidents and even another large wreck that nearly destroyed the locomotive (Kinmunndy Wreck in 1912). She was retired in 1921 and sold to a Mexican railroad where supposed the curse followed. She was scrapped in 1940's. A "replica" of the 382 resides at the Casey Jones museum in Jackson, TN. The engine was a former Clinchfield 4-6-0 of similar size that was overhauled to look like the 382 as she did in 1900.
    The wreck itself has been debated over the years. Whether Jones was at fault, whether the other train was at fault, etc. Jones and the 382 were assigned to IC Train #1 (an express passenger train) and was behind schedule (plus they were to bring Train #4 back after dropping off the #1). Because of that, Jones ran the train abit faster than usual. At Vaughan, MS, there were other trains (Train #83 and and #72, both freights). The 72 was stopped allow the 83 to pass, but the 83 broke a coupler and had to stop. While this was going on, Jones with the #1 was still flying along at full speed. The 83 was longer than the siding and it's last four cars and caboose were still on the main. The agreed factor was a heavy fog had settled over the area, so when Jones approached, he saw the 83's rear almost literally at the last second. Jones was the only fatality, as he ordered his fireman to jump and the 83's rear end brakeman had also bailed when he heard Jones' whistle.
    it's interesting to note that IC's official report put the blame on Jones and that he ignored or missed signals. In the report, it was stated that the flagman for the 83 had set flags, signal lights/fusees, and torpedoes to alert any train approaching from the rear. Also in the report, it stated that Webb (Jones' fireman) had indeed heard the torpedo explode and saw the fusees, but this has been debated as Webb later said that he never heard a torpedo and he never saw any flags or fusees, the only thing he did see was the marker lamps on the caboose just before impact.

    I for one enjoy looking at vintage model RR locos, so carry on, Sam! Although I'm primarily a juice fan, I've always considered the 4-6-0 a particularly attractive wheel arrangement. A good example are the "ten-wheelers" of the Chicago Northwestern Railway.
