  • In this video we'll talk about one of the best Apple laptops of all time: The 12 inch PowerBook G4, also known as Little Al. This thing was a breakthrough in laptop design back in 2003, and its merits are still relevant today. So how does this 16 year old laptop influence modern day MacBooks? Not enough it would seem...

I am in the Barrelista coffee shop in downtown Martinez Ca. The guy across from me had a 2018 Mac Book Pro connected to an AOP monitor he bought refurbished for $168 and was typing something while reading it off the screen of the monitor.
I want to do that too when I get a newer Mac Book so I got up and asked him what the monitor was and what Mac Book he had.

Despite its age it still runs pro applications (albeit older versions) like a champ. I've even edited some video from my iPhone 6s on it in Final Cut 6 after transcoding to AIC. Great review. I bought one in June of 2004 and loved it. It was very portable and I used the DVD drive to play movies and in the infancy of WiFi, it locked on and held the connections well. I used it hard for 6 years and upgraded the OS twice and hard drive to 60 GB from 40 GB if I recall. When I sold it, it did have one dead pixel in the screen.
Another computer of that era you should look for is the 20th Anniversary Mac. It was the design style and philosophy of the sleek iMacs to come.

  • @DavitTheCore

There is a reason why new Macs can't rival the Powerbook G4 12", it's because the G4 CPU was not power hungry, was easy to cool and was very small. Any Intel and even M series CPU requires MUCH more cooling, MUCH more power and MUCH more space. These are impossible to fit properly in a 12" casing.

The 12" PowerBook G4 was my third Mac, coming after an eMac and a white iBook G3. It was a great little travel laptop that I took backpacking Europe. Due to a motherboard failure in 2006, the 12" PowerBook was replaced with the much larger 15" MacBook Pro. The next Mac I bought was the MacBook Air (original with 80GB HDD) which I later complemented with a 2009 Mac Pro. Eventually I upgraded to a newer 13" MacBook Air and then an 11" MacBook Air, always finding appeal in a small but powerful laptop. The silent 12" MacBook (2015) came after that, which I complemented with a refurbished 5K iMac. Replaced both with a 13" MacBook Pro (touch bar) work laptop and now the 2018 quad-core i7 model (which gets noticeably louder). I much preferred the tapered design of the 12" MacBook, which felt more refined than the sharp edges of the Pro. Hopeful of a compelling option for 2020 in terms of performance, reliability, silence, and refined design.

First Mac I bought was a base model 2014 Mac mini right out of high school, still have it and use it to this day. I kept the stock 500GB hard drive and added a PCI-e NVMe drive to boot to and use the old stock HDD as bulk storage. Works surprisingly well still and doesn't have too many hiccups so long as you're patient. As for a laptop I use a 2020 13" M1 MacBook Pro. Should be viable for a long time I hope.

My first Apple laptop was a second-hand iBook G4. Latched to it for three years or so before buying my first low end 13" MacBook pro. At the time, even the lowest tier of MacBook pro had decent specs, and it is expandable. After about three years, I upgraded the memory to 8 gigs and swapped the original hard drive for a new ssd drive. This computer still serves me well until now, thanks to its upgradability. Current low end models of the MacBook pro line is, apart from the reliability issues, very stingy with regard to the specs. I love macOS, but looking at the current lineup, I think my next laptop will not be a Mac.

I own a 12" PowerBook G4 just as a collectors piece and I can definitely understand why it was such an important computer for Apple.

My first and most favorite laptop was the 12" Powerbook G4. I got it in 2005 and it had a 1.5 Ghz processor at that time. I retired it officially in 2011.

The first Apple laptop I ever used was my firsts 2006 first gen MacBook Pro. I remember walking in the cafeteria and seeing the backlit Apple logo, went over and introduced myself. She was trying to install Peach Tree account on it through Parallels, but had a hard time. I told her to bring it following week with all discs it came with. I downloaded the Boot Camp beta, partitioned it and setup Windows XP, Office 2003 and PeachTree. She was so happy, she made me use it anytime I wanted.

In 1994, I switched from an Acer PC laptop running Windows for Workgroups 3.11 to my first Apple notebook: a PowerBook Duo 230 running Mac OS System 7.5. I had the matching DuoDock, too, which made me smile every time I put in or ejected the Duo like it was a video cassette. Overall, I found the Duo to be underpowered, with far less software available for it than a PC laptop. Even though I enjoyed eWorld, I switched back to PCs so that I could have access to the latest developments in networking as well as many more software choices.
My second Apple laptop? An Indigo iBook from 2000-that I bought just 18 months ago! After watching this video, I now want to upgrade to a PowerBook. Looking forward to more of your great content.

12" iBook for me, kept hold of my desktop pc until the Intel processors came along and moved to the first aluminium iMac 20"... used Windows bootcamp for 10 minutes and never went back. Not had a PC since :-D Currently running a 2016 15" MacbookPro, I love it so much.

that actually teared me up... I had this absolute champion of a laptop for nigh on a decade from 2005 until i sold it in 2015. It was basically perfection.
And with replaceable batteries hdd and ram, it was my wife's main device for over 10 years.

My first and only Mac was the mid 2010 15" Macbook Pro. Despite being plagued with literally all of the issues that model was known for, I loved it. Probably because those issues didn't affect the usability of the device for me. I used that laptop and a dedicated Windows gaming desktop until around 2016, when I switched to the Surface Pro 4 and cloud computing services. I've been on Windows ever since.

my 1st was a 2008 white macbook, 4gb ram,ssd and upgraded to capitan..then 2007 macbook pros, then 2006 mac pro 1,1 upgraded to 8cores,raid ssd,32gb ram and gtx 660, then macbook pro 2011 13" with i5 ,then imac 2011 with i3 and 8gb ssd ect...needless to say ,I Love macs! I never had any before a good friend of mine gave me that 1st white macbook, after that, i was hooked...every other mac I have is due to her kindness and friendship ..she was a schoolteacher and the school she worked at was clearing out ALL their old macs in prep for new ones..they literally were going to throw everything i got into the crusher! One day she invited me to come over to the school before they were going to be recycled...That day was like christmas! I was in a room full of macs and was told i could take as many as i wanted..my car was so full of computers that I could barely see out the windows and it was sacked out and driving like a lowrider from the weight!..I am forever grateful and have no words to express how appreciative I am to my friend ,for thinking of me and offing me that opportunity...

The 12" powerbook was my first and the last only sensible Mac powerhouse. A thiccc 12" with a proper keyboard would suffice. 12" was my first Mac and still have it and long for its portability. Also: some real quality content in this one, keep it going!

Xmas 2001 iBook "Dual USB" 600 MHz G3 for me. :) I did regret it though because not even a month later faster models released... I do remember being envious of the G4 iBook and PowerBooks hitting the market.. I used my 2001 iBook until 2007 when I was able to get my first by-me purchased Mac, being the the white MacBook of that year (Core 2 Duo 2.2 GHz that I maxed out to 4GB RAM at some point). I again was regretting that decision because the MacBook Pros of that era were awesome in comparison, and my MacBook felt outdated super fast. I now have a 2015 15" MacBook Pro (maxed out besides storage) that I got for XMas and I'm glad I went pro this time around... Even for a 4 year old model it still does all I want, from simple media consumption, to even decent video editing performance as well... Anyway... I didn't mean to novelize my entire laptop collection, but yeah. I miss my iBook :(

Started out with a PowerBook 100 (my brother’s actually) back in 1991. Then had a 165 to a 1st generation g3 clamshell. Then I apostasized for a few years when Apple first moved away from the Power PC chips. Eventually I got the dreaded last generation iBook G4 (the one with the screen problems). When I gave up on that one I then acquired the awesomeness of the last generation 12” PowerBook G4. That thing really did rock and I still have it. It’s sluggish as all get out but still a wonderful machine.

First Mac I ever owned: Mid-2009 13” MacBook Pro, 2.53 GHz Core 2 Duo.
Still use it as a general purpose computer today with maxed RAM (8GB), SSD, and recently replaced the thermal paste. Also, patched for Mojave.
Not bad for a 10 year old computer.

Early 2008 A1181 was my first (and only) MacBook. Used a few other Macs since then and owned a Late 2011 13” Pro for a little while, but so far haven’t found anything quite like my old polycarbonate. Replaced the MacBook with a ThinkPad T430 about 2 and a half years ago and haven’t looked back.

The 12" powerbook g4 is the most magnificent portable mac ever made - it was the stuff of dreams back in 2003. As a student back then i had to make do with a g3 ibook - but finally got hold of a 2005 12" powerbook years later - i still use it for itunes, dvd's, old power pc games & even some light productivity with photoshop & word processing sometimes - stunning little machine, i wish Apple would build a modern equivelant with all the specs mentioned in the video

12" Powerbook G4 was indeed my first Mac! And it was everything you said. I needed a (at the time) very capable machine as a musician that traveled a lot. It was actually an ebay purchase used with apple care! I need a deal.
The closest modern comparison is a Mac i just bought. After watching your videos on all the macbooks, and wanting the cheapest option, I set my sights on a 1st gen 15" Retina Macbook pro (yes, mid 2012! 🤯) I took a gamble and found a very well cared for machine with 512 SSd 16 gb ram 2.6ghz i7 and the drive has bootcamp installed aswell and came with a hard case! $475 wasnt a bad deal 😎 🤞the gpu and screen are good so far!

I’ve got a 17” one I still use to this day, the keyboard is incredible, just a joy to use. I vnc into my MacBook Pro all the time just to use the nicer keyboard
Addressing your question at the end, that was my second, my first was a g3 ‘Pismo’ model PowerBook, still runs nicely on 10.3, also an amazing model, supported dual batteries (one on each side) and either battery could be ejected and a CD (easily upgraded to DVD) writer or second hard drive could slot in in its place..
