Modern Charts in Access 2019 (and 2016/O365)

- A major new feature in Access 2019 will be "Modern Charts". (Already included in the most recent Office 365 update of Access 2016.)
Here is a demo of the new features, a couple of bugs and pitfalls and my assessment of their usefulness.

20:59 If you want a trend of total values, create in a query an expression to sum the total values in each grouping, make a second chart with only that expression for each series, and then trend that sum across the series.
I have a table of values for storing my monthly expenses for Edibles, Inedibles, and Restaurant foods.
That gets its own chart where they are grouped by month.
I created a query with the sum values of each grouped by month, and then added a trend line that way.
If you try to do it within the chart with the individual values and sum values, you'll have one set of units on the right and another set of units on the left, it really through me for a loop trying to decipher what my eyes were looking at.
It just looks better separate.
The problem with Microsoft is they have put little effort into Access since about 1997. This is a great platform, but its modernization has been stale and not to par with the advancement of other similar tools in the public domain. What MS fails to see is that Access could be a stepping block to their SQL Server line. Creativity isn’t one of Microsoft’s stronger point. They have failed to grasp industry potential in so many ways. This is great video demonstrating the new capabilities. Thank you for showing us!
I fully agree on the essence of your comment. However, Microsoft put in quite a lot of effort between A97 and AXP into the SQL-Server connectivity (ADP project type) and later between A2007 and A2013 into the Access-Web-App stuff. Particularly ADP/SQLS were a huge step in the right direction. Unfortunately, both of these significant enhancements were not successful enought from Microsoft's point of view and were removed/shut down in recent versions of Microsoft Access.

Thank you sir for this video, it explained my many many hours of exploring this chart in MS access which I should seen this video before i waste my time on it. I have also noticed recently after the MS 365 updates at the end of this year 2021, Ms access limits the number of users in Ms application which gave us so much troubles in our works. Hope the ms access team it will fix this very soon.

When you first dive into Classic Charts at time marker 9:09 in the video, the charted data also displays a Datasheet. Is that data being dynamically pulled in, or was it a one time pull and future changes to the underlying data wouldn't affect the graph?
Whenever the object (form or report) is opened, the chart will query the current data.

Not sure if you covered it but also noticed Modern Charts has no "View Data table" object support as old charts did. Data table in combination with chart adds the most value when not all can be visualized graphically. It's a good start in the right direction for modern charts but, for complex charting, it's still lacking.
This seems to missing indeed. But I don't think it is a major issue. You could display the data table in a list box or subform close to the chart.
I have been displaying classic charts in continuous forms for years. If you ignore the error, Access actually allows you to do it with no negative consequences.
That's interesting and very surprising. I was convinced it's not possible. I will try when I get to it.
@@codekabinettcomen I also display subforms in the headers and footers of continuous forms. Access will initially pop-up the error and reset the property to "single", but you can go back and change it. The error only appears at the initial design stage. I then requery the charts or subforms in the "on current" event based on fields in reords of the continuous display.
I noticed in the chart settings you can only choose the date format as Day/Month/Year. Is there a way to add date with time?. I been trying to do this but I keep getting the message "you can't assign a value to this object". Any suggestion will be highly appreciated.
Sorry, I don't know any way to make this happen. It's one of the annoying limitations of Modern Charts. :-( There is still a lot of work to do for Microsoft .

I am from Bolivia the only place where I found real information about modern chart in unfortunate access that Transformed Row Source is not editable and that it is generated by changing my original query since it is not possible to change the sort. Thanks for the explanation. I think I will use classi chart for a while longer. I apologize for my google english.

Thank you! - What exactly do you mean by "multiple sub-form"?
I mean how to connect 1 main-form with multiple sub-form. For instance, an order form with inventory table and location and so on....
This should be straight-forward. You basically put the subforms on the main form and link them by the LinkChildFields- and LinkMasterFields-Properties of the subform-control.

Hi, Am I missing something, but in my version of Office (MSO 2016, 32-bit Proffesional) the Modern chart does not appear even after latest updates are installed. In MSO 2016 64-bit Pro everything is ok. Any suggestions?
Is that a Retail Installation of Access 2016? That will not get the Modern Charts, only the Office 365 Subscription of Access will get it.

@@albatrosprodooprojekti8738, In Access go to "File" - "Account" - "About Access". The title should be "Microsoft Access for Microsoft 365" if it was installed from the Office 365 subscription.

I don't think there is much difference between those versions. I would however recommend to not put your users on the Access/Office 365 monthly update channel. There are too many new issues comming through that.

I was able to reproduce this with the classic MsGraph.Chart. It seems to be caused by the transfer of the data between Access and the chart. But I was unable to pinpoint the exact cause let alone find a solution.
This problem does not happen with "Modern Charts" though. So, if possible, I would try to build the chart with the new Modern Chart feature.

Access has good capabilities to connect to external data sources. So, it may be possible to connect it to the data from your account software. - However, without more details it is impossible to say for sure.
Sir, can ms access 2019 front end file be open in ms access 2016 ?
Usually this is no problem. But if you use features (e.g. Large Integer, Modern Charts) that were not available in Access 2016 RTM, you cannot open the database (Large Integer) or you will not see the modern chart.
So if you pay for subscription you get closer to excel features added, but excel still way better for charting. MS is ignoring access and moving toward 365 type programs.
The Access team is motivated and responsive to user feedback, but they are a small team and progress is very slow.
If Microsoft didn't give us all of the functionality on charts that it has for Excel and PowerPoint, why even bother? Can't do gradient fills for the plot area, which is what I really need.

If you want a static output just displaying data to the user, a Access cross tab query would be fine. If you need dynamic interaction for the user, unfortunately you need to export to Excel an pivot there.

What's your current opinion of the Modern Chart? I've been trying to integrate a couple charts into an Access 2019 application with SQL Server backend, and it's been a real exercise in frustration. The form with the charts is built and it mostly works as expected, but whenever I try to modify anything on the form itself or even in the VBA code behind the form, Access either becomes unresponsive or crashes completely. When it's unresponsive, my only option is to kill Access with Windows Task Manager. Once in a while it will be unresponsive for a minute or two, and then respond to keystrokes, but that usually ends up crashing Access. Very frustrating. I've deleted and rebuilt the form from scratch several times. Opening Access with /decompile and/or compact&repair has no effect. I'm at a loss what to try next.
I've found a replacement tool called Better Access Charts (github.com/team-moeller/better-access-charts) but haven't yet pulled the trigger to replace the Modern Chart with this tool.
