Planting Corn in 60-in. Row-Widths for Interseeding Cover Crops - Farmer-Led Research

  • A few dedicated cover crop farmers are planting corn at wider row spacing - 60 inch rows - to allow them to get cover crops established early, at V4 - V6 stage of corn development. This video shows results of a Practical Farmers of Iowa Cooperators' Program research trial on how planting corn at wider row widths to interseed cover crops affects yield. PFI members Jack Boyer and Fred Abels and PFI research and field crops director Stefan Gailans are featured in the video.

    What were the cover crops planted? Did that differ from farmer to farmer?

      Yep it varied, they were mixes - they are listed in the link above if you go down to Table 1 in that report you can see which farmer planted which mix.

      My thouggts were just that one or another cover crop added to the yield for the crops that stayed close to normal yield. While the cover crop that didnt aid the corn or even limited yield.
      Great work over all though. I'll read through the whole experiment. Thank you!
