  • Experienced cover croppers across Iowa discuss ways they have modified their cover cropping plan to minimize yield loss risk when using a cereal rye cover crop ahead of corn. Ideas discussed include creating a space between the cereal rye and the corn crop and scaling cereal rye seeding rate down to minimize residue. The video features Nick Smith of Epworth, IA, Nathan Anderson of Aurelia, IA, Will Cannon of Prairie, City, IA and Michael Vittetoe of Washington, IA.

How do they terminate the rye with out damaging the corn?

@@tb9483 thought that might be the case. Most of the videos I’ve watched on this page have been about organic practices so that didn’t register as an option to me at first.

There are several different herbicides that you can kill rye with, if you can't mechanically terminate, also there are organic approved herbicides but are extremely expensive and are not often used in organic situations.

Ive use cereal rye many times. But for waterways. However...... why go through the expense of planting it only to have to kill it ........and add extra nitrogen the cereal rye took from the ground ???? Logic just dont add up ! About 20 dollars per acre for seed... a gallon of fuel per acre to establish rye grass.... Round up cost to terminate the ryegrass........ and the cost of the nitrogen and application to replace the nitrogen taken from they rye grass ??? Do the basic math ! NO I dont like to see bare soils either.....but these costs..... no way !
