The 9th doctor is criminally underrated in the pantheon of doctors, imo, and Christopher Eccleston deserves heaps of credit for hooking in a whole new generation of Whovians for how likeable he was in this role. I wish he had a few more dramatic scenes in his short run, but oh man was he amazing when he got to flex his dramatic chops. Thanks for the walk down memory lane, Jules. This was fun to rewatch with you.

Dalek Fun Fact: The Daleks are the longest lasting Doctor Who villain, having made their first appearance in the story "The Daleks" back in 1963, the second serial of the first season. It's not until their third appearance that they recognize the Doctor as their greatest enemy, and by the same serial they've developed their own Time Machine. In their first appearance, the Doctor is willing to give them the benefit of the doubt as he didn't know anything about them at the time and they hadn't yet done anything too bad and by their second appearance the Doctor war more wary of them but not yet as downright terrified as he was in "Dalek" of Modern Who but the Daleks didn't recognize him yet

Remember, this is the 9th Doctor. He's beaten that many Daleks before - more than once - in his other incarnations, and they know it. Which is why he knows they won't kill Rose just yet because she is their only bargaining chip. The Daleks are actually terrified of the Doctor, he's like a folklore demon to them, thwarting them throughout their history :D

    • @robertmartin9029
      @robertmartin9029 ปีที่แล้ว +22

The Doctor is probably the one being in the universe that scares the Daleks, simply because he has thwarted them again and again. And as he says in this episode, he usually does so without any weapons or tools or much of a plan before he starts working to stop whatever their current plan is to take control of the universe.
Also, just to clarify, the Daleks are not robots. While they are encased in an armored shell, they are still biological creatures. In the Season 1 episode "Dalek" we got to see what they now look like briefly, before that Dalek committed suicide at the end of the episode.

The two biggest stories in the classic series that relate to the creation of the Daleks were "The Daleks", aka "The Dead Planet", from 1963, where the 1st Doctor encounters them on their home planet Skaro for the first time. And "Genesis of the Daleks" from 1975, where the 4th Doctor ends up witnessing their birth during a centuries long war on Skaro. (We only see a Dalek production line building Daleks once. In "The Power of the Daleks" 1966.

Trivia, the Anne-droid was Anne Robinson who hoated the UK weakest link.

Someone probably already said this but the TV show Captain Jack Harkness was on was Trinny and Suzanna, a fashion makeover show presented by Trinny and Suzanna. They have often been spoofed and parodied throughout the years. You should also look up a video of Trinny who, during the pandemic, goes shopping and absolutely just cacks into a glass door at Zara and just goes on with the video as if it didn't happen.

  • @anniesharp4871
    @anniesharp4871 ปีที่แล้ว +32

Love this episode! Jack was in a Trinny and Susannah makeover show called What Not to Wear. The robots were voiced by the real UK hosts as were The Weakest Link android and the Big Brother voice -- a little dated now, but at the time of airing, they were all very recognizable figures and TV shows in the UK! I didn't expect you to know The Weakest Link in Australia!
Also, the whole Dalek origin story is in Classic Who! They're from a planet called Skaro and were created as war machines by a psychopath called Davros who kind of turned himself into a part Dalek. He died in series 12 of classic who. That's all you need to know...for now :-)

    • @julesreacts
      @julesreacts  ปีที่แล้ว +9

Yeah, we had Big Brother and The Weakest Link here, but the Aussie versions 🤣 That was really cool! I didn't ever watch What not to Wear, but I've heard of the show. I'm vaguely familiar with Trinny and Susannah from fashion magazines back in the day haha.

So glad you enjoyed this episode prior to the finale, it is so good. And it doesn't matter how many Daleks there are, The Doctor will not stand for it:
DALEK: I will talk to the Doctor.
DOCTOR: Oh, will you? That's nice. Hello!
DALEK: The Dalek stratagem nears completion. The fleet is almost ready. You will not intervene.
DOCTOR: Oh, really? Why's that, then?
DALEK: We have your associate. You will obey or she will be exterminated.
DOCTOR: No (Everyone looks at the Doctor.)
    DALEK: Explain yourself.
    DOCTOR: I said no.
DALEK: What is the meaning of this negative?
    DOCTOR: It means no.
DALEK: But she will be destroyed.
DOCTOR: No! Because this is what I'm going to do. I'm going to rescue her. I'm going to save Rose Tyler from the middle of the Dalek fleet and then I'm going to save the Earth, and then, just to finish off, I'm going to wipe every last stinking Dalek out of the sky!
DALEK: But you have no weapons, no defenses, no plan.
DOCTOR: Yeah. And doesn't that scare you to death. Rose?
    ROSE: Yes, Doctor?
DOCTOR: I'm coming to get you.
    See you for the finale!

Daleks - classic Doctor Who characters introduced in the second story "The Daleks" in 1963. 4th Doctor era covers origin and creator of the Daleks. 5th Doctor continues plot threads and threat to Gallifrey. 7th Doctor era was darkest with best story "Remembrance of the Daleks". We are normally introduced to DW with best stories on TV or at convention video rooms or at club meetings. We can let this be revealed in New Series over time in this format.

Russell T. Davies did a magnificent job of building up to this episode in Season One. Pulling together elements from the Doctor and Rose's story, with "Dalek" and the "Long Game" (which didn't seem like an important story at the time) into a fantastic episode. I still remember the first time I saw the Dalek in the reflection, the reveal of the thousands of Dalek ships, and, best of all, Eccleston's powerful speech ("Yeah, and doesn't that scare you to death"). Still amazing to watch. Thanks for your insights and reactions!

In Dr. Who the Daleks first appered in 1963. Right at the beginning of the Season 2 of the original Dr. Who Series back then. In their lore they come from a Planet called Skaro. They are said to have been said they looked completely different. But an Atom war let them mutate into these little octopus like aliens. So they use this robot shell to compensate the loss of the original bodies. They got these bodies from a Scientist called Davros - who also is an everlasting enemy of the doctor.
For the 2005 remake getting the Daleks back was very important because they are definetely fan favorites.

The weakest link question at 12:21 was not only a callback to the beginning of this season but a crafty callback to the earliest days of the original series. The first Doctor actually visited the Isop Galaxy way back in 1965! He did not visit "The Face of Boe" but did visit Vortis, a planet where intelligent human sized Moths were the dominant lifeform. (A very ambitious story idea considering the budget of the era.)
On a side note the voice of the "Anne-Droid" was actually provided by Anne Robinson, the real host of the Weakest Link.!

That was VERY different 🤣🥰 A lot of the scenarios and places and people are out of this world (literally), so you really have to put reality aside and just enjoy whatever weird thing we're about to see! Having someone human like Rose really adds such a great element. I feel she sort of allows the viewer to experience it through her eyes. It really is fantastic 😸

I love this episode on multiple levels - the solid future parodies of shows that were current in 2005 when this first released - Big Brother, The Weakest Link, and What Not To Wear were all very funny, but with a deadly twist!
The robot versions of various TV hosts (The Anne-Droid is of course the equally merciless Anne Robinson, the Davina-Droid is Davina McCall from Big Brother, and then we had TRIN-E and SUSAN-R for Trinny and Susanna, the hosts of What Not To Wear) were very well built (in a funny way) and voiced by the actual TV presenters themselves if I recall correctly.
The way the Doctor acts from the moment Rose dies until Jack explains the secondary transmat system is amazing. Just the embodiment of cold fury.
And of course we have the Bad Wolf connection finally nearing its moment of truth, and the return of the Daleks en masse! You saw how deadly just one badly damaged and mutated Dalek could be! This is a force of pure, undamaged Daleks at full might!
But the Doctor's "I said No." Speech will always take the cake. The pure defiance, I love it! An even better speech than Eccleston's last great speech of "Everybody Lives!" In my opinion. Doctor Who is a show of many amazing speeches but this one still sticks out fresh to me every time I hear it.
By the way, they did actually make a special Doctor Who themed episode of the Weakest Link! I believe the whole thing is on TH-cam and it's very funny, so I'd wholly recommend checking it out, but only once you're done with Series 2 since it has some of the characters and actors from that series in it!

The great thing about this episode is the hosts of the real, present day shows ( Davina McCall for Big Brother, Anne Robinson for Weakest link, and Trinny and Susannah for What not to wear) all actually voiced their robot counterparts! Hi Juliette. How's things?
That start of this episode caught me completely by surprise. Seeing the Doctor on Big Brother and Rose on The Weakest Link was very surreal I must say! I knew I recognised the Big Brother music but couldn't quite place it at first. Once I realised though my mind was like Whaaaat??? 🤯😲
This episode brought to mind an old movie called Stay Tuned. The plot involved a couple getting sucked into their new satellite TV service, and then having to survive the messed up versions of movies & TV shows they find themselves in (it stars John Ritter, who played Ted in Buffy). I remember really enjoying it back when I saw it in the early nineties. I wonder how well it holds up, and if I'd still enjoy it today.
Thanks for all the awesome videos Juliette 💜

I loved seeing all the game shows, Neil 🤣 I don't want you to think less of me (🫣), but I've seen a few episodes of the first season of Big Brother over here when it first aired haha. It wasn't great but it was all the rage back then. I do love reality shows, but that one was not really for me 😅 I used to LOVE the Bachelor and Bachelorette when I was in my 20s! I would also watch Real Housewives hahaha
I've not seen that movie but I think I would like it! I do tend to like quirky things... I watched a movie called M3gan last night about a robot doll 😳 it was actually filmed in New Zealand, like our Sweet Tooth was! It must be not too bad over there haha

    1. The production team originally intended to show John Barrowman's (Captain Jack) naked buttocks on screen when he was naked. The scene was shot, but the BBC's editorial policy department stepped in and vetoed it, the only time they over-ruled the production team during the 2005 series.
    2. According to Doctor Who Confidential (2005), although Anne Robinson was invited to voice the Anne Droid, the expectation was that she would decline. A celebrity voice impersonator had already been hired to record the lines when Robinson accepted.

Oooh, here we are! The finale really gets off to a great start here and I reeeeaaalllyyy can't wait to see what you think of the conclusion. I love how it brings so many elements together from across the whole season, as well as how it continues to make Jack, Rose and the Doctor feel like a team.
The TV parodies are great, even if they're a bit dated now. My family and I used to watch The Weakest Link religiously, so I loved it's inclusion here (they actually did a special Doctor Who episode of The Weakest Link a year or two after this aired). Linda is a great addition too and she definitely feels like a potential companion.
The Dalek reveal is great and I absolutely love Eccleston's performance whenever he's confronting them. His scenes with them here are some of his greatest moments from the show. I will say though, that they're made so much better if you know the Doctor's long history with them.
Oh and it's very appropriate that you compared this to Buffy, because I remember that at the time, New Who was described as Doctor Who for the Buffy generation.
I'm so flippin' psyched for next week, I can't wait!
Also, if you want a little Dalek history lesson, read on, if not, feel free to ignore it:
The Daleks first appeared in the second ever Doctor Who story and they're what launched the show to success. There was legitimately a craze called Dalekmania, with them becoming the show's break-out stars. In their first appearance, the Doctor and his companions landed on their homeworld, Skaro, where the Daleks were confined to their home city, due to their travel machines being powered by static electricity that ran through the floor. Their initial backstory stated that they'd originally been called the Dals and had fought a long and bloody nuclear war with another race called the Thals. As a result of the radiation, the Dals mutated and had to confine themselves to weaponoded travel machines in order to survive.
However, in 1974 their origin was retconned slightly with a classic and beloved story, called Genesis of the Daleks. Here, the Time Lords sent the Doctor and his companions on a mission to Skaro at the time of the Daleks' creation, hoping to stop them from being created. Here, the Dals were renamed the Kaleds, but the rest of the story stayed the same. It was shown that a scientist named Davros was the one responsible for their creation. He conducted experiments, trying to find the next step in Kaled evolution, creating genetic mutants and putting them in those iconic travel machines. He deliberately removed 'weaknesses' from them, such as emotions and conscience and believed them to be the superior lifeform of the universe.
The Doctor actually came close to destroying them at their creation in a very iconic scene, but couldn't bring himself to do it.
A lot of people actually consider this to be one of the precursors to the Time War
Sorry for the long-winded history lesson. 😆

@@julesreacts Yes, I was going to mention “The Genesis of the Daleks” myself. I know it’s relatively popular with Whovians in general, perhaps because of the subject matter (people do want to know how the Daleks got started); but the last time I saw it, I didn’t think much of the story myself-written by Terry Nation, the real-world creator of the Daleks. It featured the 4th Doctor (Tom Baker), and Sarah Jane Smith and Davros, who both pop up again later in New Who. In the 21st century, Davros is played by a different actor, but Sarah Jane Smith makes a comeback played by the same actress, remarkably enough.

The Daleks are back in a big way in these final two parts of the rebooted Doctor Who. So I thought I'd recommend some Dalek related content that you may like to add to your list of things to watch in the future. In the mid 1960's, with Doctor Who becoming so popular, two cinematic reworkings of the TV Doctor's adventures were made. This was the first time that children got to see the Daleks in colour and on the big screen. The first movie was called 'Dr. Who & The Daleks' and came out in 1965. The second was 'Daleks Invasion Earth 2150AD' which came out the following year. Both movies stared Peter Cushing as Dr. Who, though these days he's more remembered playing Grand Moff Tarkin in the first Star Wars movie. I do hope that someday you get to watch these two Doctor Who related movies. All the very best, Trev from East London, UK 👏👍.

Great reaction, as always! Weird I know, but we didn't even have a TV in 2005 so I originally missed this entire series. (In fact I got the Firefly DVD that same year, and had to ask friends if I could watch it at theirs!) I really wanted to see this before the next series came along, which was probably the biggest push to us getting a TV in early 2006. I got a secondhand copy of the DVD boxset on eBay, which unfortunately turned out to be pirated. I didn't actually realise it for ages, because it was only the printing on the disks that was visibly wrong and the only other DVDs I'd seen were Firefly so I just thought it was an odd design choice. Curiously, I knew of Big Brother and The Weakest Link even before we got a TV, which shows just how embedded in the culture they were!

We had an America version of Weakest Link for two seasons from 2001-2003 but was cancelled. A revival version began in 2021, now in its third season. I think that is because we have our own brainy game show Jeopardy!, which ran 1964-1979 and has run continuously non-stop since 1984.

Darleks: Spoiler free, just some info you asked for. The Darleks first turned up in a doctor who episode in 1963 and were a fan favorite and had many more showings. Then in a 1975 episode the doctors turns up and meets them before the Darleks were Darleks which if i remembet he does not know they will become the Darleks ( been about 20 yrs since i saw that episode) and you see how they came to be what they are.

Slight correction: it's "Daleks". No 'r' in the name.
Also, the serial referenced where the origin of the Daleks is explored is called, fittingly enough, "Genesis of the Daleks". It consisted of 6 episodes of each 25-ish minutes each. To Jules: I can highly recommend watching it at some point. Another Classis story that is often recommended is "The Five Doctors", because many key characters (including, as the name implies, the first 5 Doctors (well, kinda)) appear in it, so it's sort of a "crash course" on Classic Who if you will.

I am always so charmed by your WHO reactions *sigh* -- MEANWHILE, The Doctor has faced Hordes of Daleks before and is Unafraid! So there's that. And pretty much all of your questions about them are answered in the original series, specifically the 6-part story "Genesis of the Daleks." So when you're ready, that's where to turn. Don't let anyone spoil you for what's ahead, though! And don't keep us waiting! Thank you!
