📚Description: Fenders aren't my strong point, but I enjoy checking them out when I get the opportunity. This is a SONIC BLUE Telecaster that I thought for sure was Surf Green. Then... the body was marked relic, but the routes as VOS. Whatever it is - it actually plays and sounds quite nice

What I've learned: Fender has 5 stages of RELIC guitars. VOS, Closet Classic, Journey Man Relic, Relic, Heavy Relic.
Seems strange to consider "New Old Stock" part of the Relic Journey but it makes sense

Beautiful guitar. Wow!
That’s custom shop…you can do about anything. You can even get NOS with aged nitro, which lacks the scratches and dings. Kind of an odd build, but you can do it. I bought a similar guitar to this with silver sparkle body and headstock, and black double binding, almost identical to Don Rich/Buck Owens Teles. Same 63 hand wound pickups, which sound vintage correct…as they should.
I always assumed the “Relic” mark was so that in many years time the guitar wouldn’t be mistaken for an original. Just my assumption, I don’t know this for fact!
4:00. The relic of the NOS is the yellowed lacquer.
Sonic Blue will age into Sutf Green as the top clear coat yellows.
That DOES kinda look like Sonic Blue! Does Daphne Blue fade into a kinda Seafoam Green?
@@markcheetah4960 YES, Daphne Blue can fade into a lighter pale green (from the yellowing clear coat). Also, Sonic Blue can in extreme cases fade into a light gray/blue, it just depends.
I have a surf green Strat that started out Sonic Blue, its beautiful the way it's relic job was done, most of the guitar is Surf Green, however where the clear top coat is worn away the Sonic Blue is visible, it kind of fades in and out in the high wear areas.
I've decided to only purchase lacquer finished guitars due to how beautifully they age.
They stamp Relic on everything custom shop with nitro to make sure some one does not relic it and sell it as vintage.
Well, everything that is built to vintage spec! Yes, it is to distinguish from the originals.
@@johnbriggs3916 everything with no cnc centering punch. But I expect it will be on absolutely everything soon since the 90's are vintage now.
A fun mod for a telecaster is a 4 way switch. The 4th position is bridge and neck pickup in SERIES! Sounds huge! Kind of humbucker-ish.
I'm planning to try this at some point. Will probably build a new switch panel, as I want to swap the volume to the front, too.
I did this mod. It’s fairly simple and it adds another option tone wise. I did my mod when I was getting a Glaser B bender on it too. Felt like a whole new guitar after that! 👍
I LOVE this guitar....California surf style, it's just beautiful. Simple, classy, no flash. Whoever owned it took really good care of it, and played the hell out of it judging by the fret wear. The 9.5 inch radius is a bit more comfortable than the 7.25 inch, but no big deal. Imagine this guitar with a 12 inch radius fretboard shave and some Dunlop 6100 frets!
12in radius doesn't belong on a Fender.
@@TeleCaster66 To each...His own
All custom shops are stamped relic regardless of the aging. It keeps people from trying to sell them as original.
Not true. My custom shop tele has no relic stamp. Was NOS.
@@Jimoff2Gaming Maybe it's just poorly stamped. Do you see the CS logo stamped or just nothing under pickguard? Try looking via reflection.
@@Jimoff2Gaming That’s because yours isn't built to a vintage spec. NOS vintage spec models are stamped.
The relic is there because of the relic finish ... usually these are called relic "closet" to signify that no marks or dings; just the finish. Page/Cunetto 60's reissue tele masterbuild custom shop from '98 have similar marking under the pickguard.
what is the mark if it's dinged up? 👀
No, it is stamped on NOS as well.
Just received my 63 custom shop NOS Strat last night. So kinda cool seeing a tele right after.
It always says custom shop relic on that stamp, just to avoid fraud with these crafts and selling it as a real vintage. Type of finishing typically stamped under the neck pickup including NOS if it is "as new". As it is on yours... I have the same stamp custom shop relic and CC under the pickup for closet classic on my 67'th.
Interesting to see a maple board on a 60s spec Tele. They exist, but I think most of us associate that era with rosewood.
no they do not exist. at least I have never seen or heard of one. this type fingerboard came into production about 1966. Calling this a '63 Re-issue is just so unbelievably foul weird and inaccurate. edit: Okay I am corrected, but I still think it is optimistically 1%.
Whether the thickness of the board is period-correct is another argument, but there's a 1964 Tele with a maple board on Reverb right now.
@@Gordanovich02 Thank you for telling me. I went and looked at the listing. I guess I am mistaken. Just that I owned quite a lot of this stuff back in the day and this is highly irregular. I do not think it fits the naming of "1963 reissue" because it is so specialized or unusual. Maybe I am just contrary. I also can not stand glued on maple fingerboard. I bought a G&L maple neck reissue Telecaster and it had the same thing. I was so thorny I sold it the same day, did not want. I found this online re Fender maple fingerboard Telecaster, "The earliest versions are from around 1962 and 1963"
@@snoolee7950 Glued-on maple fretboards are period-correct. If you don't like them, don't buy one from that period.
Duuude you’re getting better at playing… keep up the good work
That is the most gorgeous guitar I’ve ever seen.
Gorgeous Tele that one. Classic tone, the real deal.
63/64. 68 / 71 good years ...Leo Fender !
Yep, I thought it was a sonic blue… love those mint green and parchment pickguards…
Surf green is very traditional, as is sonic blue.
What about Seafoam Green?
@@johnbriggs3916
Yes, and Shell Pink, Lake Placid Blue, and the rest of those classic car colors.
@@powbobs Candy Apple Red 😉
(See the song by Reina del Cid)
Crazy to me that it has quite a bit of fretwear but the nitro lacquer still looks so mint (😜).
Tele’s are great guitars. I’d recommend dropping a middle pickup into just about all of them. I get some lovely sounds out of my Nashville modded partscaster.
Agreed - and the Ultimate 3 pickup Tele is the JB Telecaster. In Blue flames of course! W 3 lace sensor and S1 switching.
Modding a partscaster yes!
Modding a custom shop… please no.
There are two kinds of no skunk stripe Fender necks, slab board (flat joint between the bottom of the board and the neck) and veneer (curved joint). Somewhere in 1963 they switched. It’s harder to see on maple board necks though.
I’ve seen guitars marked as “relic“ that were actually NOS in the late 1990s. A lot of them were left over “cunetto” relics that never actually got the full treatment. I think they were just using up parts. It wouldn’t surprise me if bodies that were set aside and stamped as relics never got the full aging treatment. Just a matter of using up parts…
Apparently VOS is the lowest form of relicing in Fender custom shop land. I updated the pinned comment with more info
Love tele’s , this is a cool one!
Trog, that tele sounded sweet!
Such a beautiful guitar! Love it
In the playing demo it's definitely a Telecaster with those twangy tones.
I have an Olympic white reissue body color.
And over 24 years it’s now yellowed just like your tele there. I like it better, it’s got character.
Thanks Trogs, love LP's but great to see a Tele for a change.
My favourite players guitar🙂
Gorgeous guitar. I love the green. The black tweed case is nice too.
Trogs, I believe with this guitar and when it is from; “Relic” in this situation, just means…old.👍👍
Amazing clean tones. Very nice player.
I’m so glad I own a boat load of vintage fenders/Gibson, and won’t ever need to purchase any thing with strings new.
It is technically a relic, it is supposed to appear as if it has been in a case under the bed all these years.
It has been.
No -- you are thinking of Closet Classic, not NOS.
Looks just like my 2017 Classic Player Baja Tele 60’s
That’s the problem with blue finishes, they turn green!
I got a mint green case to go with it!! I keep my 2019 tele in penny finish in it. Crazy contrast with the colors and I love it!
I have a few other types of guitars, but I really enjoy the three tellys I have. Thanks for the review!
10:35 "I got my first real six-string. Ohhhh at the five and dime"....
Trogly i havent been here in a while, your playing man, matches up with your presentation better than anything. Great to hear again.
Love Fender friday
Thank you, Austin for teaching me things I never wanted to know. Super cool Tele, should have played some Waylon or Haggard. At 10:30 it sounded like Bryan Adams' "Summer of 69", but that was a hollow-body Gretsch.
That is a great sounding guitar!
Fantastic tone ❤❤❤
My Jim root tele has the same case
Probably not the centre pocket.
2:02 these are my favourite straps for sgs and guitars that have the pinnon the backside or in general they look classy
Definitely has a Clapton vibe 1:53
More Fenders please
My 52 R tele says “relic” too. Also nos
What’s the 52 like? You dig it?
@@mertmunson1417 its a custom sho 52 R. I bonded immediately, through a 74 super reverb or a two rock Bloomfield
Not a pedal guy. It cant get better, in my opinion
@@donknotts5625 that’s awesome man!!! I’m a Gibson guy, but I’m in the market for a tele. Any recommendations???
@@mertmunson1417 if you hv the cash, custom shop. They put better capacitors. The 52 has the dark circuit, some dont like that. I hv two telecasters, some shorts on here, been playing only 3 yrs so the shorts may not fully represent, good luck hope you find a great one.
@@donknotts5625 thanks man!!! I'll check the shorts out and the custom shop! I appreciate it!
I have a custom shop 1:1 Blue Floral Jazzmaster. I saw no body stamps under the pickguard but the cavities have a brass shield and I did not peek underneath. It does have the "Journeyman" relic finish.
Awesome playing tonight Trogly! I think that Tele inspired you!!
色、最高😆
音、めちゃくちゃ最高😆
これぞ、テレキャスター😊
原点にして頂点とも言うべきか😊
Sounds great!
NOS, YES!
I’ve had a lot of Fender Custom Shop “NOS” guitars that had the RELIC stamped under their pickguards. Looks like Fender is just marking the bodies to make sure their guitars are not confused with genuine 60s or 50s guitars.
All fender custom shop bodies say RELIC, I don't know why
So people can't pass them off as original vintage bodies
@@styrenebuilds6851exactly
Wildwood 10 Fender Custom Shop guitars have Ready Relic stamped under the pick guard, IDK if that helps you or not. It is a thinner finish then NOS.
Well, the 'Relic' bit most likely is the yellowing of the Sonic Blue finish!
Tele Friday! My favorite!
I have a 63 custom shop nos and it has the patent numbers under the fender logo on the headstock
NICE AXE
All custom shop NOS are marked 'relic'.
Probably only vintage spec models.
NOS is a widely used term in the automotive industry also. There's someone locally selling a Telecaster in the same color but it's a bit road worn and they are wanting about $1200. I may have missed it but do you think that is the original pickguard ? Looks like it could've been maybe sprayed to look like it was aged in the factory.
Ohhhhhh beauty! 😮
pretty tele
I have a 2012 Nocaster NOS and it's also stamped with RELIC under the black guard. Always thought it was some sort of mistake in the factory...
No, it's intentional -- so you don't pass it off as a real Nocaster.
that thing was only 2095??? DAMN. I wish I had been bit by the guitar bug a lot earlier than I did :/
If it was the beat up heavy reliced style wouldn't it be stamped ROADWORN under the pickgaurd? I'm thinking by RELIC they mean that the color is faded, yellowish finish. As for the nos, I'd say that was cleaned off years ago.
No, "Roadworn" is a Made in Mexico finish.
I think teles are so cool, even tho I’m a Gibson fan boy haha. I just hate those dingy little headstocks. Put on an oversized Strat or jaguar headstock on that and it’d look so sick. That being said, this one is a pretty one, and it sounded so good. I bet it’s fun to play. Alas, unless it says “squier,” I don’t think it’ll be coming to my house anytime soon 🫠
My Least favorite part of the telecaster is the headstock. To me they're just plain ugly. The body shape I can live with. That being said I do like the tones and trebly bite out of a Tele
@@jonathanhudak2059 I gotta agree with you. It sounds great, it’s just kind a stupid looking with that dingy looking thing at the top haha
Tele headstocks always remind me of those witchdoctors that shrink heads.
I think the Telecaster is a pretty ugly guitar, but boy, they do sound great and are fun to play.
@zombieparrot2606 love it yes!!! 😂👍
@raytorvalds3699 agreed lol! At least looks wise hahaha. I've never played one to be honest but yeah that headstock is plug ugly!
I got a new "Seafoam Green" P Bass in 1993?. A color that wasn't offered. I called the factory and they said that it was Sonic Blue, which tint varies drastically from time to time.
Trogly I always watch your videos, but if you want to answer me, why you always more enthusiastic about Gibson than any other brand? , my opinion is that fender and prs have way better quality than the first one???
I wish gibson did more maple necks.
Waaay nice!
Why is it wired like that with a cap (treble bleed) on the volume when it's already wired like a junior? I'm not super familiar with teles is that standard?
Dig the sound
What a beauty. I love Telecasters. I look at them online every day - when my missus comes in I make out I'm browsing porn. I have 3 sub 2k guitars but Id love a custom shop - this one - Oh my Lord...
Perhaps the relicing was tarnishing the blue to green?
Now you’re talking my language my Teleblaster is from ‘89-‘90
New Corvettes are offering this color,,,,,
Actually, I’m happy to say that I’m more than fine with my 2007 Fender MIM Tele.
Dreamy 😍
I'm over guitars.... who am I kidding, I want them all.
All the best pickers play tele's. Mama kin...
Did Fender have maple cap necks in 63 ? i thought 63 necks were all rosewood cap and maple cap was like 1968
The lacquer likely turned yellow on its own, and not due to sunlight. Otherwise, it would be different under the pick guard and bridge.
It is different.
What do you think of the 60s Baja telecasters?
Trogly, will you be getting the Fender Joe Strummer?
Was a maple fretboard an option in 1963?
There was a time when Fender produced their maple fretboard as a separate piece as opposed to the one piece maple necks. This was concurrent with the rosewood boards to save costs (as were many of Fender's innovations) as the "board-less" neck blanks would have been identical. The exact dates that this happened escape me for the moment but this sounds about right.
As far as I've read, 59-62 was rosewood only then from 63 onwards you could request maple.
@@Gordanovich02
Thanks for the confirmation.
It's a long time since I studied such matters and it's good to know I'm not going completely silly in my old age - just colour blind. I thought I saw a "Daphne Blue" tele when the case was opened.
@@roypalfrey5694 that’s why there’s no sunk stripe I guess.
A real 1963 Tele with a maple cap board would have been very unusual, if not impossible to find.
Nearly impossible.
Don Rich and Buck Owens specially requested them in 64. I have a custom shop replica of that silver sparkle guitar with matching headstock and maple cap neck.
My 2008 custom shop time machine also says relic under the pick guard although it’s not.
Mama Kin.
Longtime Fender players: Eventually get into Les Pauls by accident or ennui.
Why give it a Nitro finish? It makes a lot of owners go paranoid in their search for 'Nitro friendly' stands & headstock hanging hardware etc. The current quality of 'Polyurethane' coatings have never been better or less reactive.
Because it’s a vintage spec? I personally love them, I don’t care much for keeping them perfectly clean, and I love seeing the natural aging, something you just don’t get with a poly finish.
Plus, they only put nitro finishes on certain guitars and custom shop instruments. You know what you’re getting if you check.
I agree. In most cases Poly wears better and requires less babying. Plus if you like to be careful with your guitars and keep looking immaculately new you won’t get that with nitro. The one exception is if you intend to gig it and expect it to accumulate some road wear and want it look organic. Nitro is better at taking dings and adding some character to the guitar. Dings on guitars with poly look ugly because they crack the finish very acutely around specific areas and the wear doesn’t look continuous and achieved incrementally over many years of playing.
Not sure I agree with that take on it being a non-traditional color. Surf Green is an iconic Fender color that is always a favorite. One of Guthrie Trapp’s most played Teles is in Surf Green. The Jeff Beck Signature Strat has long been produced in Surf Green as have many other Strats. Maybe it’s less common for Teles but even the American Vintage ‘63 Tele is offered in Surf Green. Trogly gets a pass because he is not really Fender guy but the lesson here is that more guitar companies should offer this color. Gibson occasionally offers Kerry Green but it’s usually a one-off. Gibson has been upping their color choice game recently and this is one that they should add to their normal rotation. It would make their lineup a little more bright and and may attract some new customers from outside the hard rock/metal genres that are turned off by the darkly serious and gothic overtones of their historic color schemes. I know it goes against their DNA but times they are a changing.
Sounds good! That color makes me look fat though…
Surf green isn’t a custom color, Austin hahaha it’s a classic
"Money was different then." 😞😞😞
It was a lot better then
Fenders just look better with maple fingerboards and I don't wanna argue about it.
The fret wear kills it as soon as you try to bend a note! Sorry Trogly but the wear absolutely does effect the playability !
Nice little Tele but I’ll stick with my Jimmy Page Dragon Tele!
Yahoo
Fender stamps these RELIC to differentiate from a real vintage Tele
Maple fretboard in 63? And a cap at that? Umm
