I remember this game a 12 - 3 beat down by the Jets then 2 days later the Nordiques returning the favor winning the Avco Cup beating the Jets at home 8 - 1. Loved those years in the WHA some memorable times.
The Stanley Cup Finals ended on May 14, leaving several days open for CBC to broadcast games from the Avco World Trophy Finals. They were among, and I think the last, of the very few WHA games ever telecast by CBC.
i didn't know Don Wittman called games for the WHA. mind you,i was a twerp back then and was more worried about finding old pepsi and coke bottles to take to the store

Dang. As a Canucks fan it was rough watching King Richard in for all those goals. At least they got their revenge in game 7 winning 8-2 and taking home the last Cup.
I still love old-time hockey. Two years later, both clubs were in the NHL along with the Oilers and the Whalers. Nowadays, the NHL is so watered down I don't really give a fuck.
@13:29 - It's Agnetha Folkskag from ABBA! Do you have any video from the Jets' exhibition game vs. Poldi Kladno from December 12, 1976? Keep these WHA videos coming!
Yeah they might have had better luck pulling the goalie and having the 6th skater lol, though Brodeur made some big saves too - I feel for the goalies in this era as they look so much smaller in their nets than they do today with all that padding!
Not only did they not have any padding, the goalies were much smaller because they had to be acrobatic and mostly just use their glove and stick, along with the double pad slide... A very exciting era, to be sure
@@EdwinMaturski-cc9is a different time, for sure! But if the goalies didn't have the modern bulky equipment nowadays, the speed of today's game would be too much for them. Feels like we would see almost football-like scores lol!
The Golden Jet... It's quite incredible that his kid ended up scoring more than him, and went on to become one of the greatest goal scorers in NHL history
I believe that it was '79... And it was done because sometimes there would be fights after a goal and the other team would be undermanned on the ice and causing a bench clearing brawl
@@EdwinMaturski-cc9is Don Cherry forced the change by clearing the bench every time the Canadiens did it during the 1979 semi-final. Ziegler banned the practice after game 2 of that series and it hasn't happened in an NHL game since.
Shifts in those days were very long so players could not go full tilt. About ten years ago, NHL players’ shifts were reduced to about 45 seconds which allowed them to skate full tilt. Recently, I’ve noticed many NHL players are approaching shift durations of a minute and a half (some even longer); consequently, they cannot go full tilt.
I wonder when they stopped pronouncing hedberg as hed -bear. Lol I distinctly remember the 'bear' pronounciation but until this video thought I was misremembering it!
It also continued when he went to the Rangers... You can still see the footage of those games on TH-cam with the great announcing duo of Jim Gordon and Bill "The Air-Raid Siren" Chadwick

these goalies are awful the announcers when they make what is routine save today say its great save and when they let in awful goal they always have excuse like he didnt seem to be set and was surprised by that 20 mph shot that beat him lol
You have no idea how heavy those leather pads were. The weight of the pads meant that you couldn't wear the gargantuan pads you see today because they would weigh 100 pounds once they got wet.
@neilens1589 any of us who played goal in the 1970's, know how heavy the goalie pads were. I had a pair of Bauer pads that were leather & filled with moose hair. They were 10 lbs. Today's pad weigh around 5 lbs each.
@@Firestone1With today's huge pads being triple the volume of those old pads (thickness included), I can only imagine how heavy they would be if they used the same materials that yours had. They might weigh 30 pounds each 😂.
Those leg pads are made of leather and cotton padding. A single pad probably weighed more than all of the equipment worn by today's goalies... oh, ya, and they got heavier as the game went on because they got soaked with ice-water.
These guys couldnt play in a beer league nowadays, especially the goalies. However, you can see Hull's talent, you could see him being a star in today's NHL with modern training and techniques.
Goalies wore leather pads with cotton padding back then. They got so heavy once they got wet that you had to keep them small. Today's goalie equipment is huge and weighs nothing by comparison.
Thanks for posting, i loved the WHA

Awesome footage!
This is interesting.
Some good plays, some beer league level stuff too. More standing around watching the puck than I remembered.
One of my hockey regrets is not being able to see the Golden Jet live or on TV, like I did the NHL in the 70s.
Keep those Jet highlights coming.
Hey Joe I grew up watching you on CKND. The good ole days.

I believe the game was broadcast on CBC.
I do remember now that CBC did some WHA playoff games! Great memories! I also remember Global in their early days doing Toronto Toros games
glen sather has always said how much he enjoyed the Jets style of play (WHA days)
Tremblay sur la glace pour 10 buts des Jets wow

I think this is the first clip of a WHA game I've ever seen. I was baby / toddler during the WHA years so I don't remember this league at all.
