  • Aired 4-12-1989 on the Laker road pregame show hosted by Roy Firestone. Byron keeps it real regarding Mychal Thompson, calling him an Oreo after Mychal T says Scott was once a member of the Crips. The meaning of Mychal T's reference to former Dodgers GM Al Campanis is that a couple of years before this Firestone/Mychal interview, Campanis was forced to resign his position over commentaries he made to Ted Koppel on Nightline about African-Americans' supposed inability to manage MLB teams and to swim well. It was similar to Jimmy The Greek's screwup and firing from CBS a few years prior. Later, Byron Scott concludes the interview with his Stevie Wonder impression. Yes, this is a weird one. PS: There is a behind-the-scenes story of Byron and Mychal T having a boxing match refereed by Kareem. The match took place after Mychal T announced that he could outbox anyone on the team (sounds like something he'd say). When asked about this years later, all of their Laker teammates say Byron pummeled Mychal thoroughly. Thompson was asked about this match on radio a few years ago and he denied everyone else's version of the story. Around the same time, Byron was asked about it and he confirmed that he indeed took care of business. It appears that Byron finally had enough of Mychal T's gibberish.
