Congrats on the accidental catching of the bull trout. I fished the Blackfoot River before and believe I had one, possibly two on until they ripped off my fly. I wasn't targeting those fish either. I'm impressed you'd wander into grizzly territory in pursuit of trout in wild places.
Also...just an fyi...you might want to take that Bull Trout footage of you holding it up out. From what I understand they are to be released immediately. You could possibly get in trouble.
Thanks for the concern, but the regulations specifically say you are permitted to take a picture. The video shows the fish to have swam away with a lot of vitality.
@@CoppersmithStudios1 ..I believe your seeing that in the western district regulations exceptions. The North Fork is not included in that exception. If you look at the standard regulations you will not find the option to take a picture. The Missoulian Angler also talks about it on their website. I wish you could. But please look at standard regulations page 24. I'm seriously not trying to be a pain. Your a nice fellow and this is a good video.
@@WildBlueDiscovery The standard regulations do not comment on taking pictures. The separate Bull Trout regulations brochure specifically say "It is legal to photograph your trophy catch ...". I discussed this with Steve Burton, administrative assistance of MT FWP. Also note that immediate release is not meant to prohibit holding the fish in the water for a minute or 2 to recover. The Exemptions only pertain to the Targeting of bull trout. The "immediate" release process is statewide in MT. So again, thank you for your concern, but everything is fine.
You surely are quite stubborn. Two guys giving you good advice and you seem to know better than they do. I was told by a Montana fish cop that it is illegal to target Bull trout in the Blackfoot or it's tributaries. But incidental catches are okay as long as you do not remove the trout from the water and it is immediately released. This is right off of the Montana regulations; "All waters are closed to angling for bull trout and all fish must be immediately released unless otherwise authorized in the Western District Exceptions. Note: Federal rules prohibit the attempted take of bull trout unless specifically authorized by state or tribal regulation."
The advice given is incorrect. I clearly was NOT targeting bull trout. There is no regulation saying you can't remove the bull trout from the water in an accidental catch. How the heck are you going to get the hook out? I have an email correspondence with the MT FWP division clearly stating it is permissible to photograph an accidentally caught bull trout prior to release and this is part of their official policy even though it is not mentioned in the standard regulations. This case should be closed.
Wow a bull trout!! I’m looking forward to some videos on the dual purpose rods you are using. I’m really interested but not sure on what size to start out with.
The regulations on bull trout in Montana specifically state you may photograph your bull trout prior to releasing it. It says that on the actual bull trout license that you have to request. I am in full compliance with the regulations.
Sorry but read page five of the 2023 regulations. Bull trout catch cards are only good on Hungry Horse ,Lake Kookanusa and the south fork of the flathead river. Swan lake is open to Bull trout fishing but there is no taking of fish . Quote " All other waters are closed to intentional angling for Bull trout year around" Accidental catching of a Bull trout has its own regulations and I know for a fact if you take one out of the water and get caught shes an expensive one. As a fellow fisherman dont want to see a brother cited. Good fishing@@CoppersmithStudios1
You should learn to catch and release fish without a using a net, particularly for the size of the fish being caught. Netting the fish increases handling time and the amount of the fish slime/protective coat being removed.
Personally, I think the positives of the net outweigh the negatives. You are able to land the fish much quicker, meaning you dont need to fight the fish until exhaustion and less stress on the fish. That being said, his net should never be used. The new rubber nets remove virtually no slime.
Well this used to be a gem until out of staters started posting videos of it for views.
Excellent video. Beautiful scenery.

I always carried bear spray.

@@garyrafferty7625 looks like a $6,000 fine is in order?
Please do not return to Montana if that is how you are going to handle our native Bull trout.

Also..probably switch the thumbnail...I dont want you to get in trouble
Nice video. I have not fished this one yet. Tightlines
Did you have bear spray with you? Did you see any bears or bear sign?
Yes I had bear spray and so should everyone else who wanders in this area. As shown in the film I saw some fresh bear paw prints.
