My beautiful, brilllant multi -talented aunt struggled with this disease in the early eighties as well. The disease stole all she had to offer from us and the world. She died at an early age before I could know her well.
Me, too. She's a magnificent actress. I also saw her in that movie you just mentioned, and others: BABY SNATCHER, THE CHILD IS MINE, TO LOVE, HONOR, AND OBEY: THE LAST MAFIA MARRIAGE,and THE FIREFIGHTER.
True - a building is built idea by idea. Just like life - moment by moment. Be conscious and cherish your moments and big ideas. - Nancy and Valerie are such great actresses. Movies back then had such real acting that pulled you in. At the end of the day, family is all you've got.
On VHS 📼 my kids only knew what they were because he had quite the collection. And I had my 1st born in 1993. Like the 80s the 90s were still cool. These movies meant something. Storylines with good writers. Today's crap will never hold up to these gems.
I've been through this with my daughter she refused to take tablets and i left it there and on top of that she was diagnosed with chronic anxiety and all i needed to do was speak to God and i pleaded the Blood of Jesus over her and whoever chooses to believe or not God did Wonders for her mentally and physically 🙏
I had a brother it killed himself he also schizophrenic I suffer panic PTSD and it's not easy some days I just don't want to live and nobody understand
Great movie gives more understanding about mental illness. And the commercials bring back stunning memories of 1980's. Amazing how it all was before the computer /AI age.
Anyone with a child that has been diagnosed with this. You really must watch this movie, you must please be there for your child... it's hard & never be or feel embarrassed to ask for help. This show is so humbling & be sure you have a lot of tissues.
Superb acting, Valerie Harper was such a compassionate mother, although mental health was such a hard topic. I also got a kick out of the retromercials & the hairstyles and clothing of the times.
This movie leaves me with so many questions about Schizophrenia and what has changed between the 1980s and now. I know that there are better medications now and I know that people with this can learn how to deal with the condition but, I still have all these questions and I am terrified of this happening to me. I have some mental health issues that only started during my adult years and I get afraid that even though I am 40 years old and keeping regularly in touch with my mental health team, i am able to work full time and i can live in my own home. One of my major things is anxiety disorder and i suppose that is what scares me into thinking i could develop new mental health issues and "lose control" of my mind and my dignity like Nikki. The inner workings of the brain are terrifying!
Late onset schizophrenia is not exactly uncommon, but it is still only 20% of cases. It is also much more likely to happen in people with some signifcant sensory impairment (deafness in particular), and in those who already have schizoid or paranoid personality traits. Medications have improved somewhat since the 1980s when treatment was still heavily reliant upon anti-psychotics like chlorpromazine which doubled up as major tranquillisers and had a heavy sedative effect. Now, patients are more likely to be prescribed "atypical antipsychotics" which have fewer side effects and are more likely to be adhered to by patients (a crucial factor in avoiding relapse).
You can’t overthink and worry about things that haven’t happened and more than likely won’t. Concentrate and work on your current issues, which it seems like you are doing.

Doctor says “I don’t need your daughter to be sick to make a decent living” was a harsh but probably true response. I’m sure most doctors do not want us to be sick. I’m just wondering how many schizophrenic patients are misdiagnosed because it’s easier to say that’s what they have. I’m not saying Nikki’s diagnosis wasn’t correct. It’s just very scary how quick they were to diagnose after 1 episode.
True but we shouldn't forget, it's just a movie. For the sake of time they had to "Speed it up" for the plot. My older brother was diagnosed with schizophrenia. It took months of us observing him and the strange little things he would do (talking to himself, drawing weird pictures, saying that stuff is there that wasn't really there) before my parents decided to take him to the hospital to figure out what was going on with him. This was back in the early 90s (not long after this movie was made) back when little was known about schizophrenia and most of the public was ignorant about it.... after a few weeks of testing, they concluded that he, in fact, does have schizophrenia. So I think realistically, it doesn't take a few min or an hour to diagnose but rather a few days or even weeks of testing. They have to test you for drugs, go through your entire family history, keep you in quarantine to observe your behavior for themselves. They can't always just go by what you tell them. They need actual records from their own observations. It takes quite awhile.
I love Nancy McKeon! Thanks for the upload. In regards to schizophrenia, there has never been a schizophrenic gene found,. nor a brain chemical imbalance. The end proves what is best...a great Environment. Not drugs that zonbie people out.
I think schizophrenia is maybe a spectrum thing and that often, people were and are misdiagnosed and tossed into a huge blanket category when the so-called professionals had/have no clue what the hell is happening. The patients often know more than the doctors.
They are now healing mental diseases like this using a ketogenic diet that puts people in ketosis. Where they start burning fat for fuel instead of sugar. People have come off their medication‘s that are all better. They are even stopping cancer from spreading, reversing autoimmune disease, and so much more with the ketogenic diet. Funny seeing all the old food commercials that most likely are causing diseases like this.
In the book "Possessed Mentalities," a mother describes the tragedy of her two schizophrenic daughters, one of whom killed the other. This was a touching movie that reminded me of the true story.

I have Manic Depressive Disorder/ Bipolar Disorder and Severe Fibromyalgia. At 47 years old I have to use a walking cane and in 2019 I gave up driving a car. I take cymbalta and lamictal to control my bipolar disorder. There is no cure for Fibromyalgia/ severe nerve pain. My doctor gave me Mortin and Norco, no I do not take them at the same time. I take one every other day. I have Diabetes, high cholesteral, and high blood pressure. I take medicine for these health problems. Also problems with Breathing and COPD, plus sleep apena. Severe Fibromyalgia for me cuases major depression and major chills in the body. So I can relate to this movie. I sometimes I feel normal, but of the time I do not. I just hurt emotionally and physically every day. If you are hurting I am letting you know you are not alone.
I wish this could have been made into a mini series. I would have liked to see Nikki move into the center that can help her more and watch her learn ways to deal with her Schizophrenia. It would be really interesting to see her be able to finish school and even go on to the working world with the proper medical team taking care of her and medication that is right for her and helping her to thrive!

Wow. She gets mad because her friend asks her not to bring her dangerous daughter to a wedding and goes home to find that daughter started a fire and then blames and attacks her other daughter
I mean, she's a mother of two grown daughters. One of whom developed Schizophrenia suddenly. A husband who is basically absent throughout the entire ordeal because he doesn't want to face what's happening. Being under that amount of stress on a daily basis doesn't exactly keep you emotionally stable yourself.
I suppose we , as the viewers, are being prompted to really try and understand how difficult that would be, if we had a daughter in college who suddenly lives a traumatic life, there's no blaming anyone, no cure, your beautiful daughter is suddenly different. We'd have to be a "mama bear" and plow through it , PRAY and find resources, search for answers and find helpful information . Who cares what neighbors and friends think, family comes first.
I m from india i suffered at 21 age now am at 30.what are the suitable drug for strange voices?in india 2023 give me 90's drug olenzapine which are used in usa.

People do that stuff tho we had an older relative tell my mom not to bring my older brother to her sons house event because he paces. Especially since this same older relative had a mentally ill grown daughter that was a recluse and had multiple outbursts and breakdowns . Her dad invented Ebay and Amazon.....he was doing online marketing. That was very new for that time. As far as I recall, no one called it the internet in those days, at least not among the common people. The computer was the old Dos system. As we sit here watching this movie on our computers through a medium that is international and real time, the concept of "the computer was talking to her" is something we are all used to. If anyone told me in 1984 when taking my first computer class that this would be as it is today, I don't think I would have even imagined this. I mean, we could barely win at Turtle Trot and Oregon Trail.
Now in 2023, we're literally developing A.I. to basically create commercials and marketing campaigns for us now. This moving is almost 40 years old. Lord knows what our technology will be like 40 years from now.
34 years later, generally same drugs are being prescribed, with numerous side effects. Thank God for new approaches like Caplyta (out now), and SEP-363856 (out in 2023). Much more funding is needed for research, and I believe there will be a wonderful answer.
I think more acceptance and listening to people on both sides would be a start to an answer. Not necessarily more dope from the big pharma rich companies. Capitalism is not the answer.
Doctors need to explain carefully what the side effect can be. I had a bad fall when hiking a couple of weeks ago and really injured myself. The Dr prescribed pain meds that could give patients heart attacks and or strokes! He never told me that! I found out through research. When prescribing meds patients need to be fully aware of the side effects! I was angry that the Dr didn't feel I had a right/ needed to know this! I switched to another pain med that is safer. I now know I need to ask as many questions as necessary. I thought I was but apparently I wasn't!
Not necessarily. The mom just seemed determined to stay strong even though she may be crying inside. She obviously was the person in the family who kept everyone focused.
I think they'd have to deem the person incapable of functioning independently in order to do that.... not much research went into Schizophrenia back then so I think they didn't have much to work with.
Yeah, they automatically think their daughter is sick and keep the computer without question. Maybe she was not schizophrenic. Too quick todope folks with pharmaceutacals. Parents should educate the children and mselves well beforehand beforebstigmatizing a chilkd and doping them up. Think a little more for yourselves and listen to your children! Not everything is an illness. Sometimes they are saying what is happening even though it sounds far fetched.
I don't know, if you were acting like that and throwing your computer around, screaming about how it is talking to you, then maybe they might think you are sick. But then again, we live in the digital age and we all have some kind of computer that talks. But her dad seemed to be very advanced, he was doing online marketing. He did not call it the internet but basically he was the precursor to Ebay and Amazon. It was Schizophrenia, but the first doctor did not get the description of split personalities correct. I have met Schizophrenics, they do talk a lot in third person.
@@moorek1967 Yes she is..The doctor told her parents about that..He announced them she had schizophrenia. She Hears voices imagines things that are not real and is convinced about these things. That is schizophrenia..typical symptoms..Split personality.
