Man, this exact scene is a roller coaster isn't. You think after Ellen captured, it is all done until when she returned to the capsule to tell how awsome it is to Deke...
Problem with EVA is, he's the only pilot. There isn't anyone at the controls of the LSAM to keep the ship steady, and NASA hadn't developed the EVA thruster-pack. If Ed had simply jumped he'd have pulled the LSAM with him, potentially sent it crashing into the CSM. Granted it wouldn't be moving very fast but momentum is a b*tch in space. He could easily have damaged one of the RCS thrusters on the outside, thus reducing the control ability of the LSAM in maneuvering.
The only problem with that was the Apollo 23 disaster which due to internal politics caused NASA to receive lower-quality parts that led to the explosion that claimed the life of many NASA employees; resulting in the Apollo Program being put on hold for months. Apollo 24 was the only other Saturn V that managed to depart to relieve the Jamestown Colony. They had no other choice but to salvage 24 in order for Ed to return home while the 24 Crew maintained the Jamestown Colony.
They had a time limit. Probably only around 2mins to throw the tank for Apollo 24 and the LSAM to have enough time to capture into lunar orbit. To push the tank so slow that it comes within grabbing range for one whole revolution of the Apollo 24 CSM would be a challenge.
And what stopped the CSM from tumbing? Wouldn't it just it keep tumbling and wrap the tether around it after capture? And what about the RCS in the CSM (normally used only or rentry). Couldn't that have been used to at least stabilize the CSM stack.....oh well, too much thinking.
Orbital mechanics aren't intuitive, if they were throwing backwards it would cause the object to loose acceleration, that would cause it to drift down towards the moon.
That's not how that works. Think of your frame of reference. On a macro scale, sure if you throw it hard enough, that may be what happens to the object eventually. But in between the two spacecraft, such a throw works as in the show. Think, if Ed were to have tossed a tennis ball inside his craft, backwards from where the ship is traveling, the tennis ball wouldn't suddenly start falling towards the moon as it flies across the inside of the craft.
@@starpawsy because the engine was still burning, so once the engine stopped after the accidental mis-firing they were in a tumbling state, and they use all their prior fuel to make encounter with the moon, so they couldn't gimbal lock into a stable position without the RCS.

I doubt that it is possible to catch and grab such a piece of mass in zero gravity. Perhaps you could grab it but you could not hold it steady because it would rupture the space suits integrity. These were suits (A7L) for the moon surface and not for acrobatic purposes. Even on the moon it was very hazardous to stumble and fall because the suit could rupture.

I think Margo’s arc is probably my favorite thing about this show lol.

you can hear the fear in ed's voice when he says he missed
or they should have tried the Interstellar Docking Scene ... "Ed what you doing ?" ... "Docking"
it was tumbling
Great effects looks totally real and as good as any big budget movie could look.
I subscribed to Apple TV just for this show.
Same!
same
I downloaded it instead
Yep im rewatching this show today
This scene is perfect
I still feel like the easiest solution would have been to EVA over to the LSAM. Once they are clear of the Apollo Ed could have picked them up.
ed couldnt waste fuel, if they did that i doubt they would've had enough fuel to land

ANd he didnt need to "throw" it so fast. As he said - it's in space.

Please what is the music at the moment of Ellen's grabs the tank ?
Landing by Jeff Russo
No, it's not that, this song is before when Ellen grabs the tank
we will need equipment like a tug to transfer small cargo from vessel to vessel. electrical propulsion with FPV & Auto nav could do the trick.
Makes me sad to see Tracy and Gordo in happier times.
You see that, Deke?

Someone help me find the music that starts playing right after she captures it. I can’t find it anywhere. 😩

Im sure that they could have gotten the two ships a lot closer. Heck, they could have docked!
They couldn’t dock since the Apollo capsule was tumbling. But yes they could have gotten closer.

No because they couldn’t match rotation.
