Before you slag off the original Mini too much, go drive one. Not a rust-bucket though, a well maintained 1.3i Se7en or Paul Smith Edition, etc. Drive it hard. Attack roundabouts and enjoy the grip, then use the throttle to encourage understeer and blast your way onto a fast A road at what feels like 70mph, but is actually 30.
You'll giggle like a girl sat on a washing machine.
It'll be impractical, with heavy steering, a harsh ride, and surprisingly poor fuel economy. Yet it will be fun to drive with bags of character. Oh wait, that's what you just said about the MINI. What a coincidence.
You won't want to own one, but you won't regret having tried it out either.

My first car in 1972 was a mini van with added side windows and a back seat. I think it was a 1962 model which had the starter in the floor. I was told the reason for that was because in those days you turned on the ignition and had a separate starter button which was just a switch which used to spark if you weren't firm enough due the the high voltage going through it which caused them to fail. In the 60's women often wore stilettoes which they could use to operate the starter.
The wind came in through round the speedo. There was no lock on the back door, you just pulled the handle out and put on the parcel shelf. Of course there were the sliding windows to facilitate the huge door bins. A bloody awful car but real fun to drive. At the time there were accusations that it was too fast as young drivers often crashed them. They were never fast but they felt as if they were due to being so low with a poor ride. I'd love the chance to drive one again.
The engine in the newer Minis was the Prince engine which was designed by BMW and Peugeot. As well as the Mini and Peugeot vehicles I think it was used in some of the 1 and 3 series BMW models.

Why do you guys all say the same thing - that his car is weird? Why is it weird. the basball cap comments are just copycat! It is a very distinctive purposeful looking car. I've owned over a dozen minis, Cooper S etc and I own a Cooper Coupe SD and have thrown it around the winding roads of the west coast of Scotlan and its it behaves like a gokart. Why do you also say it is impractical?! Its not, its a two seater. Not everyone is married with 2.2 kids. The bot is extraordinary. the only impractical thing about this car is it is hard to look over the doors and avoid scuffing low profile wheels on high pavements and also seeing traffic lights change when you are up right by the lights. Its fantastic car, the best build quality of the entire range and one day it will be a collector's car. Stop calling it weird or I will start calling you a sheep! Its quirky yes and thank God there are still quirky cars. Surely you know coupe is pronounced coopay! The americans call it a coop!

In answer to your question at the top.
The car is a Coupé. Pronounced Coo'pay.
Etymology and pronunciation Coupé (French: [kupe]) is a French loanword. It is the past participle of the French verb couper ("to cut") and thus indicates a car which has been "cut" or made shorter than standard. It was first applied to horse-drawn carriages for two passengers without rear-facing seats.
Unfortunately in the USA, because the English language is a tad difficult for them to overcome, they call them "coops". Which is a cage or pen in which poultry are kept.

Coupé is a French word. The British like to speak French to seem more posh. It's a habit they picked up after being invaded by the French a long time ago and having to use a lot of their words. In America we seem to appreciate the English language more than the English do, and French seems ostentatious and affected. So we say coupe (pronounced coop) instead of coupé.

The funny thing about the petrol engine (which is unreliable, see timing chain, water pumps and loads of other stuff) people with Peugeot's blame the BMW engine under the hood and on the MINI its the Peugeot engine spoiling the party. Truth is the 1.6 petrol was developed jointly by BMW and PSA group and had some engineering weak points with a high failure rate. Avoid without a cast iron warranty.

    • @khalidacosta7133
      @khalidacosta7133 3 ปีที่แล้ว

If you look at any true Peugeot engine over the last 25 years, they don't use timing chains but rubber belts. BMW uses chains in it's engines... so I wonder which company was responsible for engineering the timing chain on this? I'll give you a hint, it's the same company which used a timing chain on their 2.0 diesel, which inevitably went wrong, costing at minimum £1500.....

    These engines are called "prince".
They include the 1.4l engines with 75-95 hp for the One, the 1.6 with 75- 122 hp for the later One and Cooper models and the 1.6 Turbo with 174-218 hp for the Cooper S and the John Cooper Works (GP) models.
I like the sound of these engines but other than that they are total disasters. Peugeot and Citroen also used them in other models they were designed by MINI. BMW and MINI could use the 1.6 HDi diesel engines from PSA that was their deal.
Like you said the gasoline/petrol engines are a diaster burn a lot of oil, timing chain and tensioners typical for BMWs, the high pressure fuel pump can fail but there was also a recall for that and sometimes BMWs VANOS-System can act up but that's not that common.
The diesels on the other hand are great, just drive them enough not short distance to keep the DPF in good shape. I don't know about the 1.6 but the 1.4 HDi engines had something called "Eolys" it's a special fluid that allows you to regenerate your DPF at low speed (30mph) that's similar to todays Urea.
The only problem these engines have is that start leaking at the injectors because they get lose over time. There's a simple fix for that! Just tell your mechanic or do it yourself; Everytime you service the car just tighten the injectors up.
    Also great video Matt

    Another great video!
In your opinion, what's a good car for someone who has passed for a year or so but is facing extortionate insurance prices? Being in london and under 25, everything seems quite pricey

Got to admit, I have had a few Minis in my life. All in all pretty trouble free apart from one which was basically made of filler...….which I found out on my first MOT lol

A good review from someone who knows how to apretiate and review a small car as mini. Really tired of those 'murican reviews that sh!t on everything a mini is and say : "for this price go get a mustang". Mini trully is a blast on a reasonable b road.

My guess about the original mini being made for so long and the car industry is that in this country we have bad managers backed up by bad politicians. Nobody does anything unless they have to and by then it's too late. If you work as a manager then make sure you don't fall into that category.

I got a coupe S nearly two years ago & I love it especially on the motorway taking long drives home which can last up to 5 hours - great car to drive my only issue is the back window being a bit small & no window wiper

I bought a 2013 Coupe S also a few years ago. I love the car. It is like driving a go-cart. No need to brake on corners. Acceleration is awesome. The lack of a rear wiper hasn't bothered me, because who really cares what's behind you, this car makes you pay attention, with a smile on your face, to the road ahead.

The current “mini’s” are an absolute insult to the memory of the original mini’s. I wouldn’t touch a current mini with a ten foot bargepole. Pointless bloated style over substance. Rant over 😃

I'm sorry but I just don't get these modern takes on "Peoples Cars" The original Mini was a dirt cheap mode of transport for the masses, as was the original Fiat 500 and the original Beetle whereas these new ones are jaw droppingly expensive for what they are and the phrase "More style than substance" was coined just for them. They are just fashion baubles for those with no individuality and are about as far from "Peoples Cars" as you can possibly get . I would rather have leprosy than any of them if I'm honest.

I don't like the look of a cap worn backwards in the first place so I wouldn't want a car trying to mimick that look.
My experience with modern Minis is a bit of a mixed bag of two rental cars.
One was a Cooper S (possibly even "Works") on an Autobahn trip. The suspension beat me up and the engine noise was deafening - to my mind, the car was just unfit for that purpose.
A year later, I got a Cooper Diesel for holidays in Yorkshire - and I couldn't have got a more pleasant car to drive on the B-roads there. It was quick and safe in the curves, the suspension was just right and its engine was refined enough and pretty frugal.
So If I had to get one myself, I'd probably choose a three door saloon (or the early Clubman semi-estate with the third door) as a Cooper Diesel.
