    God bless Joan Chamorro for mentoring this young woman and many other young musicians to learn actual music that has melody, harmony and feeling. I'm proud of Alba Armengou for learning to sing this song. It's not an easy song to sing. She sings this beautifully and movingly. I hope she receives due recognition and goes on to have a successful musical career.

    Alba...WOW. I am just mesmerized by your voice on this haunting Strayhorn classic. Only the most talented singers have even attempted this very very difficult song over the years. You float thru it like a songbird. Before this I thought no one could top Ella's version. You, young lady, have done just that. The players in this ensemble are just perfect. You have all created one of those magical moments. As Mr. Strayhorn wrote, and Alba so beautifully sings: "...such a miracle". Thank you. The world needs to see this! I can't wait to see what's next.

    I'm a born again jazz fanatic because of this woman alone. She's about all I've listened to for a week and I listen to a lot of freaking music. I don't think I've heard anyone before quite like her. It's the song, the whole song and nothing but the song. A voice that doesn't need vibrato, echo, reverb or even a mic if you want to get down to it. If love took a human form it would be her.

      Jeff, congratulations. “ born again” I fully agree with you. She is fantastic. I could meet her a couple of weeks ago in the Netherlands. She was there as a humble member of the band of Joan Chamorro.
      She has to leave the band because she is 20 now and will go more and more solo fortunately.
      I saw her first many years ago playing the trumpet as a kid. I became interested since I blow that horn as well. Listen to “ wee hours in the morning” lovely.

      @@janberings7743 I wrote this just after I found the SAJB for the first time. It's 8 months later and I still listen to Alba every day. Wee hours is fantastic. So are Yesterdays and Lil Darlin. Between the two full length albums available with Joan C. on bass, and the fifty or sixty top notch performances on youtube, I still can't wait until her first studio record comes out. The first cut is available tomorrow on Amazon.

    Alba Armengou is indeed yet another shining star that Joan Chamorro and San Andreu has produced. The documentary movie about the band and its program explains some of the "how" of the way young people can develop such talent, but there obviously is much more to it than that. How do teenage musicians acquire the maturity, "chops" and polish to sound like musicians two, three of four times their age?
    No one can accuse Joan Chamorro of picking just easy songs or charts for his musicians to perform, either. Billy Strayhorn tunes like this one, for example, can be difficult for even seasoned pros to master successfully. Alba makes it look easy, though it most certainly is not.
    I will go out on limb here--there are far less inspired musicians and performances that have received Grammy nominations. If there was a category for the best upcoming jazz musicians, numerous members of the San Andreu band would probably be nominated. They are that good. Here's the test: cue this up for a knowledgeable jazz fan with audio only. I'd bet he or she would guess that the singer is at least in her 30's or 40's, based on her phrasing and "chops."

      @RockyMountainJazzFan "cue this up for a knowledgeable jazz fan with audio only. I'd bet he or she would guess that the singer is at least in her 30's or 40's, based on her phrasing and "chops."
      I've often thought that about Alba. I think an even better example of that is her version of "Embraceable You" -- and that was recorded when she was a year younger! The future is limitless for this girl.... and I give Joan Chamorro a *ton* of credit for getting her (and all the others) to this point.

    • @alanlevin167
      @alanlevin167 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@chanelops Young people can develop pitch awareness very early, especially if there is a musician in the home. (Check out: Claire Ryan, who started singing at age 3, correcting her father's wrong notes at 4 and positively demonstrated perfect pitch at age 5. Also, Emily Bear started playing piano at 3 and writing songs-writing them on music paper- at 5. Both of these kids are well documented on TH-cam.) The next trick is to get to these kids early--most of the players in the SAJB have been playing for at least a couple of years before they start with the band. After this, it is up to Joan and his magic-as well as the 'older' members of the band.

    • @chanelops
      @chanelops 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@alanlevin167 Yeah, as the dad of a son with perfect pitch, I'm well aware of this. When he was in school, his music teacher didn't use a pitch pipe, but just asked him for the note they needed. But now it means that every time he comes home we need to tune the piano!
      What I was really getting at was the continued development beyond this stage, to develop a set of musical skills and talent that is so amazingly above average. You could understand this happening with 1 or 2 kids, but Joan seems to perform this feat on a routine basis. I'm thinking they should get the Barcelona water supply tested, maybe there's some kind of magical ingredient in it. They could bottle it and sell it as "Sant Andreu Jazz Water". :-)

    Another star from Sant Andreu school. I love the absence of quaver (well trained) when Alba's singing those looong notes: it's just her real voice. Sinatra said this is the way to do it; excessive quaver is often used to mask poor pitch control.

    • @aileen694
      @aileen694 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Noiseintheoffice, Hi!
      Yes, as a professional singer of many years and styles, I agree it's Very difficult to sing a note straight, without vibrato. Although vibrato, when used well and deliberately, can add colour, depth, dynamics to a note. I notice that Alba uses the same technique playing her trumpet. Lovely!

    Sheltering in place isn't a bad thing when you have amazing talent like this to listen to. Alba's voice has an undefinable quality like that of Karen Carpenter that just emanates emotion. Would love to see these guys at Chicago's Jazz Festival some day.

    The word I think is sultry I know I shouldn’t say that about such a young lady and I don’t mean it in a disrespectful way far from it. A voice way beyond her years exquisite range with a real feeling of verse and English not her first language. So pleasant to listen to. Well done Alba. 👏👏👏

      English is not even her 2nd or 3rd language.

      At the end of the day, she's still a kid. It's nice to respect her efforts and her talents without objectifying her with terms that say more about the listener than it does about her performances. In an industry that is known for abuses toward women, it's critical that we respect important boundaries. Even Taylor Swift was victimized; it happens at every level. We need to protect our women in the music industry.

      @@boboloko So do you speak for all predatory men, or just for your predatory inclinations? This isn't that complex. Just don't needlessly objectify her. Just don't do it.
      Tease out those feelings you may have and appreciate her talents for what they are rather than implicitly discussing your opinion of her supposed passionate nature, which is what sultry means, or further objectifying her by saying she has innocent sensuality. What the fuck is wrong with you? Dude, pull back. That is completely misogynistic. Have some self awareness. Ask yourself if you'd be saying the same thing if it were a young man singing the same song. You got it?

      @@PolaOpposite "A voice beyond her years". That's a compliment with no sinister intent. A flower is a lovesome thing indeed.

    • @PolaOpposite
      @PolaOpposite 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@boboloko I guess you don't know what sultry means. _Sultry_ is defined as "attractive in a way that suggests a passionate nature." And the metaphor of flower has a long history of being sexual. Google metaphor + flower + woman and see what you get... and calling a young woman a flower is not so distant from "deflower." The guy even apologized for saying it. He just didn't need to go there.
      Words matter. She deserves better than that.
