I did my two years National Service 1949/51 most of which was spent at RAF Uxbridge. It was then the home of various units including the Central Band of the RAF and RADU. This stood for Recruits Advanced Drill Unit and a pleasure to watch. It was subsequently renamed and reformed as part of the RAF Regiment and is I believe now located at nearby RAF Northolt.
it's not a FAL it's a L1A1 self loading rifle. It uses the same ammo 7.62x51mm but was adapted for British use by lightening the barrel and getting rid off the automatic capability. We did slope arms but only at the rest as it meant resting the butt (the bit you put to your shoulder) on the ground
Sorry I disagree. I'm ex RAF and Aux RAF Regiment. Greatest admiration for the guys. However, I believe the Guards to be the finest Infantry soldiers in the world. They set the standard. 👍
To see them using different rifles type in Royal Airforce Drill Show worth watching using SA80s & 303 Smellies. they are using SLRs here the march Luftwaffe March is now known as Aces High. Their Not bad are they Bang on old chaps Roger Wilco out.

@@thecurlew7403Indeed. 7.62 against 5.56. I'd choose a heavier rifle as we trained hard to take more weight. Extra range and stopping power. They moved to 5.56mm to accomodate others. Loved the SLR.
I have no idea why countries insist on inventing their own rifles when they all use the same NATO ammo. It is abundantly clear that the HK416 is the best rifle around.
I'd imagine it's so that every country can develop their own rifles based on what they need out of it For instance, the Swiss need a rifle that can operate in cold and high temperature While the Spanish need a rifle that can operate in sandy, hot environments
They did when it was first introduced but it was found to be unnecessary . The Shoulder Arms (Trail Arms for the Light Division) and the Order Arms was enough for practical and smart parade use. The very early L1a1’s retained the cocking handle of the FN Fal which didn’t fold away like the later ones we had and this may have damage uniforms/medals etc. Potentially this may have been a reason. I have only ever found one photo that was in Soldier Magazine at the time and I saw in an old SLR Drill pamphlet index Slope Arms from the Shoulder Arms. But the pamphlet had been updated and the Drill Movement removed. Just my opinion supported by some evidence. If anyone has any proof I’d love to be corrected! I am that nerd! All the best.
This not drill, it is showboating. Proper drill had a purpose and there is only two types for infantry...heavy and light. This is embarrassing, a chorus line nothing more.

the voice so familiar and so missed on all the royal and military events....tom Flemming
When I was stationed at HQP&SS I was living in at RAF Uxbridge where these lads were.
I must say the band is fantastic,

+colin logue yes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
An Aussie who served using the "right arm of the free world" on parade agrees. Props mate , the SLR will go through a fucking tree it hits that hard.
Squarebashing at its most superior ! Marvellous to watch!
These guys are superb! Guards could learn a thing or two!
The Guards Regiments don't do the precision Drill Team thing.

@@gazza2933 When the SLR was on the go not now Guards are destroyed by government too short too fat and the drill is rubbish compared to the past.

My old squadron still as sharp
Fantastic show our forces at their best 😂
Utterly brilliant!
..impressive..probably the best drill in the UK? Great to see the SLR being carried.
Brillianty done
Leaner & fitter looking back then. Not much fast food just the chow in the JRM 😂
Brilliant 👍👍👍
at a time when we held a proper gun in our hands :)
superb stuff
SLR continuity drill ! amazing , when was it?
Austin Chan 1991
ok , seemed like RAF use that as their drill rifle at early 1990s .
Austin Chan This was the last big show using the SLR before moving to the SA80. And my first big drill show with QCS :)
that's a good one sir!
1980s ?
The Rock Apes still show the Guards how it is done properly!
Any regiment in the British Army could do this tick-tock drill if given as much time to practice.
explain yourself lol.
The Guards were good until the last 15 years now its yuk.

Equal or better than any in the world
Sad to see such negative comments from some. I’m ex army but give credit where it’s due .
WHICH YEAR?
The only country in the world that laughs at soldiers firing guns. Ten seconds in.
The thing about the SLR was that carrying 300 rounds of the ammo was damned heavy compared to 5.54 ammo.
5.56
5.54 ammo? New one on me.

Love the L1A1.
No, no ... he just meant: "Through aardvarks to the stars!"

Very old clip
what is the first march name?
It's 'Aces High (Luftwaffe March).'
François Stevens. Thanks you of the R.A.F for your job in ww2. ...

May I ask, what's this based on? From talking around and through some of my own experiences I would say the SA80 family is better than the HK416.
SLR!!
I think that the RAF's queen's color squadron should have a white pith helmet for honor drill displays. It would look a lot better than the peak hat.
Well they think they are as good as the RM so may one day.
They beat the Rangers in a challenge.
What sort of challenge, another showboaty TV deal or proper soldiering?

samain11 is it your secret pleasure, is that why you're watching it. Don't worry I won't tell 💋
Not a secret pleasure, an honest opinion from an old soldier.
That explains the belligerent comment. Being an old soldier doesn't make you a good one. Take your pills and sit down dear.
Good or bad, outside the wire.
Ignorant and belligerent, I'll let you get back to your can of super strength.
