    Skybound is rebooting Transformers and G.I. Joe in a new shared universe alongside Robert Kirkman's Void Rivals. In this interview, I discuss with writer Joshua Williamson his introduction to comics, a bit about his other Image comic, Dark Ride, and his approach to G.I. Joe. We talk about how Joshua chose the characters for G.I. Joe and Cobra, what he wants to do with the book that's new, and why it's starting with two separate books, Duke and Cobra Commander.

    A little late, but I just finished this. I really like how it doesn't feel like a question and answer interview, just a conversation between two creatives/comic lovers.

      Josh is pretty good at doing that, he does a show with Sal from comicpop once a month and it’s just them shooting the breeze and talking industry stuff casually. Check it out sometime!

    Issue 24 is one of my favorites due to the art by the great Russ Heath. And then there are issues 26 and 27, the origin of Snake Eyes. Issue 22 was my first Joe comic but I became a comic collector with issue 23.

    My first Marvel Subscription came in sleeves of brown paper bag material. Not sealed or taped, just slid in. I think they were X-Men/X-Factor/New Mutants from the Inferno event. Within a year they switched to thin sealed plastic bags (maybe as thick as a bread bag) with thin cardpaper backs (a bit thinner than frozen food box cardpaper). Never rolled up but often folded in half. But they were SOO much cheaper than newsstand when you got multiple titles.

    10:59 omg! He just mentioned my two favorite X-Men story arcs: X-cutioner Song, and X-tinction Agenda. In that order too. Then I'd say next on my list would be Dark Phoenix Saga. Anyways, his "window" was the best! I'd go all the way to 1997, when Marvel died... it was killed by Onslaught 😉 However X-Men did a lot of great stuff throughout the 80s and 70s too! From what I would call the Chris Claremont era to 1997 was a fortunate time for comics readers.

    He created some of the most enjoyably memorable creations of my youth and early adulthood, but I think you hit the nail square on the head. The latter part of some of his more creative runs i.e., X-men, Fantastic Four, seemed more of a caricature of his earlier brilliance when he started them.

    I loved GI Joe as a kid but I haven't ever really read the comics. I was all about the cartoon and the toys. As an adult I stayed away from GI Joe until the movies came out and I loved some parts of it but hated others. Absolutely Love the G.I. Joe: Resolute cartoon film.
    I've loved Joshua Williamsons witting since I randomly decided to pick up Nailbiter, and he might be the reason I give GI Joe a chance in comics.

    Hey Chris. Just a little feedback for posterity, maybe pass it on to Josh:
    I'm such a one as has gotten their first G.I. Joe toy in 1987. I watched the cartoon when I was little, but not religiously. I know the faces and names more from the back of the card than the show. I never invested in the comic. I recently bought the Skybound Transformers since issue #1. Love it's grittiness. Of course I detected the cameo of Duke. Given Transformers is turning out to be a story that is grown-up and not as disgustingly vapid as the 80s cartoon, I'm excited to read it. And of course, today, as I watch the GI Joe cartoon from the 80s, there isn't one episode that isn't insulting to one's intelligence. Again, idk about the comic, but I'm apprehensive to retrospectively read them for they would surely result in being too simple minded for an audience of today, let alone an adult. SO, I say all this to say that I'm excited to read about these characters in a way that is respectful of source material and yet geared towards today's audience. Very excited to be here at another start! I also am collecting what I can of GI Joe Classified series action figures. Beautiful pieces of art they turned out to be.

    Finally. It sounds like the stories I've thought about for years where we live in the alternate universe of the old cartoon two-parter "Worlds Without End." The building of the teams with alternate paths is a fun playground for the mind. Nothing stands out more to me in the old stories than those two episodes. Nothing since has made me think about the characters so much either.
    I'm looking forward to reading what you've worked on dude. Thanks for keeping it old school with Lary Hamma's inspirations. I've been honored to meet him and get his Captain America book signed.

  • @cliffwoodbury5319
    @cliffwoodbury5319 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I know its a property centered in the 80's to modern times, but I would make some stories as early as the feudal age, and would go threw from that time to modern times, and I would make it so from the start they had a dimension (in modern times they have a number of them) and the dimension was a normal (just like earth). Like they have specialized forces (eco warriors) they could have small detachments that fought in dimensions against threats outside of earth that effect earth directly (infiltration) or indirectly (manipulation threw others) though most of the characters would still be in the real world, periodically they may be called to fight in these dimensions when the special forces know they can't handle it. P.S. - G.I. initially stood for "galvanized iron" and that is what it could mean until the 20th century when the organization changed it to mean government issue.

    GI Joe and Transformers are like pizza and ice cream...amazing on their own, but combined? :/ Also, Hama killed off Snake Eyes and wrote in Dawn Moreno. This was his dumbest idea until signing off on the terrible origins movie that needlessly race swapped the main character. Hopefully Mr. Williamson doesn't go down that route, and keeps the character, if introduced, true to comics continuity.

  • @NerdRahtio

    GI Joe should NOT be in the Transformers Universe. Kids in the 80s always thought that was stupid anyway. GI Joe is based on Delta Force, they’re the best of Special Forces. The accident that made Snake Eyes is based on the real failed hostage rescue in Iran back in 1979-80. It’s universe is full of Ninja Clans and the Corsican Mafia and corporate security groups and all that stuff that made it rad. Putting them in the Transformers Universe minimizes all of that stuff for them to play second fiddle to Alien Robots. It’s crap. stop it. You’d be better off mixing MASK and Transformers.
    The original Larry Hama run was one of the best universes ever created. Send the Constructocons to go fight He Man or something.
