Fiddleheads and Woodchips at the off-grid cabin

  • In this video I have some equipment issues and rodents are the cause. I clean up a huge brush pile with the Kioti tractor and the Wallenstein chipper. And we end the days with some trout and fiddleheads. Maybe a cold one to wash it down. A great day at the cabin.

HAHAHAH I had that exact same Lawn Mower Dale. A real work horse.. Mowed a 1 Acre Area of Lawn in the Spring and Fall with it for clean up with the bagger. It had better lift than the Garden Tractor.
My new place in the Woods does not have a Lawn to mow. Got rid of all Lawn care stuff...

You know things are bad with the price of gas when even the squirrels and mice are trying to steal some out of your tiller! :)
I remember years ago, a squirrel ate through the rubber gas tank fill pipe on my first car. I pulled into the gas station to fill up, and gas started spraying out the bottom of my car. I looked underneath and saw the same chew marks on the fill pipe going to the gas tank. I got my revenge come squirrel season that year!

I'd say you got a squirrel chewing the tank. They will do serious damage on the tractor or just about anything else that is around. The only real fix I have found is to trap or shoot them. If you aren't there all the time you would be lucky to catch one for a shot. Mice can do damage to the wiring on your tractor too. Rodents, varmints are part of the landscape. I do get a bit of a break living on the Bay of Fundy when it comes to flies. Our season runs about 2 to 3 weeks later in the spring, we usually have a stiff sea breeze, and of course we have fog. Fiddle heads have been out here for a week or so but I can't touch the size of your trout. Wherever your hole is I'd keep it quiet, around here people drive out from the populated areas and scavenge the countryside.

We have Christmas fern fiddleheads, here in Ohio. They are about the same as what you've got but ours are furry looking. Ive personally never tried them, though the old timers say they are edible. We've got the black flies here too. It seams like you slap one and four more show up to see what's going on. I hope you get your tiller figured out. We must be about three weeks (or so) ahead of your planting season, as we have our garden in and have blooms on our tomatoes already. Keep safe up there and I'll be looking forward to your next video.

Get yourself some aluminum thin gauge metal sheets at lowes/Home Depot. Measure the sides and cut a length of both sides of the motor. Drill some holes and then pop rivet the aluminum to the sides from the inside of the mower deck. I did this with an old MTD push mower that I’ve had forever. I went through all of this effort because this thing consistently fires up after the second pull for the past 18 years. Be sure to sand and paint using some rust oleum paint Before you pop river the aluminum to the inside. You can make that mower another 5-10 years.
