Intentional flipping and yodeling, Cranberries style

  • Here's one for the trained singers - do you want to yodel or sing some Cranberries, but you can't get your voice to "flip"? I've had to teach this unusual skill to a couple of singers recently, so I thought I'd share it with you guys.

Now, how does Chappell hers on Picture You??? They’re so close together in pitch and I can get it when there’s a large range but not that close.

Omg... I literally was struggling with this "cracking" technique, mostly because I was used to musical theater style and a "clean transition" but in 3 minutes I was able to understand it and do it, THANK YOU!

Yes! I have been searching for an explanation for this vocal technique for a long time. It has a bit of an Irish quality to it, but it’s not lilting or keening. I used to describe it as like a crack or an out of breath sound. NOBODY does it like Dolores. She’s not out of breath she’s just amazing. It sounds so painful and nuanced and emotional. The best advice I ever got from a vocal coach was “you are not singing. You are acting. You need to make the words of the song mean something to you.” There is no art without emotion.

The most underrated song she does this in is 'So Cold In Ireland' where she builds up chesty E4s and goes into a brief yodel before singing the chorus.

Hi! I have been struggling with this my whole life. mainly because im have a musical theater voice and have heavy vibrato and not the buttery smooth clean tone most singers have. But i was able to do this right after the video! I was so happy i nearly cried. Tysm!

OMG thank you so much! I've been looking everywhere for this technique. I think my training from various voice teachers was preventing me from doing this properly. I was used to making smooth transitions, you explained it perfectly thank you. I"m working on Dreams getting the las at the end, Linger and Zombie, I need to get Dolores's technique to do these songs justice. I just subscribed to your channel.
