  • Important note: I’ve confirmed with GS that the lug width is offically 20 mm. My calipers actually measured inbetween but I rounded down and reported to you what my AD told me and what major sites reported which was 19mm. I apologize for misreporting the official specs!
This is the short version of my Grand Seiko SBGR317 review. I've simultaneously uploaded a much more detailed version of this review, entitled "Long Version." If you want a more complete review, check out that video, instead. However, this version covers the most essential points.

A simple design executed incredibly well. If Seiko started implementing slimmer cases and female end links their watches would fit so much nicer. Beautiful timepiece nonetheless.

The official specs state the lug width is 20mm but is it 19mm???

Where do you find GS official specs stating lug widths? The lug width issue is one I actually edited out of this video because it just gets too complicated. I measured the lugs and despite seeing it listed on a few watch sites as 19mm I had pause regarding this. My calipers seemed to read more like 19.3-19.4, however, since that’s not an actual size I attributed this discrepancy to some measuring error or perhaps just extra “play” in the lug. Rather than try to explain this an make the video even longer I trusted what I was, told by the AD, what I had read on watch sites and what was the closest number on my calipers. However, you’re saying GS offers official lug width numbers? I’ve never been able to find those. Can you direct me toward that information? Unless my calipers are way off, this seems odd. I don’t acually have a leather 20mm strap to test it with, only a rigid milanese. If this is supposed to fit 20mm, it seems as though it would need to be a flexible material, unless I’m missing something.

@@automaticreviews6999 Yeah so in Japan (where I live) there are these Official GS Paper brochures. In there, the specs state 20mm. This is also what the store informed me...

@@kaiserphoenix01 a mystery worth exploring. Odd that so many sites list it as 19, and my measure was inconclusive. My AD saying 19mm is less meaningful because I find a lot of AD’s tend to guess at some stuff. I’m going to have to order a 20mm leather strap. It’s overdue that I had some in my collection, anyway, and I’d love if I could buy a good quality off the shelf strap for this watch.

@@automaticreviews6999 Yes, my source is Wako, the global flagship store for GS. The highest ranked in the world and Seikos 1st ever retail store in the world. The building itself is owned by Seiko. I trust my source and they said its 20mm....Interestingly many sites in Japan state it as 20mm...However according to exact measurements including yours, I have seen that its around 19.5mm which is why im so confused...

@@kaiserphoenix01 I’ve reached out to GS directly, we’ll see what they say about all this. It’s time to sort this out. Will keep you up to date. Thanks for bringing this up.

As far as wearability and surface wear it’s a great watch, there are zero problems there. I’ve gotten into the zone with the lack of micro-adjustments, and even the Zaratsu polished surfaces still look great after heavy wear. My only issue now is a pretty significant one. Timekeeping. The watch needs servicing. It’s to be expected by now and is even, I believe, within the recommended interval (~3 years)but it’s just the degree to which this watch gains time. It’s beyond any other piece I have, even those which have run far longer. It’s minutes fast per day at this point, and I’ve even tried demagnetizing it. So the accuracy has gone from incredibly good and consistent to really quite poor. I’m really not sure why exactly. I suppose I’ll have it serviced soon and see if this recurs. I do love the watch, though.

An additional update: GS did the servicing, I had brought it in 1 month before the end of the warranty. It took about 5 months. The result was that it just really needed servicing. The only part replaced was the gasket. However, I’m thinking to do a video about the servicing alone, because they knocked it out of the park. The watch had only one real flaw when I bought it which was the seconds hand had a smudge on it visible under loupe or close visual inspection (manyyyy GS watches have a similar flaw), as I mentioned in the review. They polished that out. The watch is now completely perfect. They also polished out all the scratches from the case and bracelet. They wrapped the head in plastic like a new watch, and returned it to me in a GS branded, really nice quality zipper case. $0 charge, all covered under warranty servicing. Massively impressed. The watch is better than ever.
