  • With each new generation, cars evolve just a little bit at a time. Small tweaks and improvements stack up over the decades until, before you know it, some models are nearly unrecognizable from their original forms. What started as one thing gradually morphs into something entirely different, even while carrying the same iconic name.
Join us as we rank the Top Cars That Gradually Became Something Completely Different, despite nothing really changing at all on the surface.
    Mitsubishi Lancer Evo
Of course, we're starting with the winged Mitsubishi Lancer Evo. Despite its name suggesting constant evolution, the Evo actually comes in at the bottom of our list because it didn't change quite as dramatically as others.
    Porsche 911
At number 6, we have an automotive icon - the Porsche 911. On the surface, the 911 seems like one of the least evolved vehicles here, with its silhouette remaining remarkably similar since the 1960s. But under the skin, this classic sports car has undergone radical transformations.
    Mercedes G-Class
Once a fearsome military machine, the Mercedes G-Class has taken an unexpected route to become one of the biggest flex mobiles on the market. But its story starts in the mud and sand as a no-nonsense recon vehicle for the German army.
    Mini
The Mini's origins can be traced back to the 1950s when Middle Eastern politics caused gas prices to skyrocket in the UK. The public was forced to buy tiny, ultra-frugal cars that could barely be called vehicles.
    Hummer
Coming in at number one on our list is the Hummer - a vehicle that truly exemplifies constant evolution. Beginning life in 1992 solely as a military-grade off-road truck, the Hummer H1 brought unparalleled capability to the battlefield.
    BMW M3
Beginning life in 1986, the original M3 was primarily designed as a successful homologation special, bringing motorsport tech straight to the street.
    Chevrolet Corvette
Taking the top spot is the Chevrolet Corvette - an American automotive icon that has seen more transformations than nearly any other vehicle. Since 1953, the 'Vette has gone through numerous identity shifts, swinging between muscle cars and dedicated sports cars over its successive generations.
