    Excellent! I love that your off-road tests are so consistent.

      Thank you, I try to keep them that way so you vehicles can be easily compared!

    I put these in my trail guides... they’re awesome in real world off-road situations. Just add good tires. Add a 2in lift to make it perform similar to a Rubicon. Good video!

    • @EngineAdventures

      They are surprisingly capable, best in this class by far!

      Don’t forget the pinchweld mod and bigger tires.

      Yeah. Confirmed! My friend has an FJ and he's always blown away what mine can do.
      No trouble hanging with a stock FJ. A heavily modified FJ would beat me though. That said , sounds like a 4 inch lift might be in the works for the Cherokee Trailhawk.

    I really appreciate how you do a test in every mode.

      Thanks for the comment! Usually its predictable but sometimes it's not, which is why testing in every mode is so important!

    I am a big fan of your videos, especially the AWD/4WD mode demonstrations. The best and most comprehensive demonstrations I have seen.

    Great video subscribed! I have a 2015 that I love on my channel. Really cool that you tested all the modes. I keep rear locked at all times off-road.

      Thanks for the sub! I think a little of people underestimate the capability of these little Cherokees, they are very capable.

    I’ve started to notice that sometimes locking a differential on a cross section can cause unwanted sideways action as compared to a traction control system that brakes the spinning wheel and eases a vehicle up. Great system on this Trailhawk!

    • @EngineAdventures
      @EngineAdventures  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I first noticed that when I had the Ford, Chevy, and Ram 3/4 tons the same week. The Ram actually had the most controlled climb and was the only one without a rear locker. That was before I started the more extensive testing I do now though.

    Great demo of the drive modes. That must be the most under rated car on the road/trail.

      It really is kind of looked over as it isn't a "real Cherokee"!

    Interesting video as I am considering one of these used. I will have to check if you have taken a 4wd full size pickup on this same hill, I am getting out of my 2004 Sierra 4x4 which is a bunch longer but has been a comfy companion for years with anything I have asked of it.

    • @EngineAdventures
      @EngineAdventures  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for watching, I have likely taken most vehicles you be interested in over this course, but if you're like me and typically but 5+ year old vehicles, then I probably won't have covered the specific model year your looking for. Thanks for watching and commenting!

    Great videos you're putting out! After all your testing what would you select for your top all-around SUV that can do moderate off-roading (not much more than what you test here) but still be decent on the roads getting to the hills? The Cherokee trailhawk, 4Runner, Xterra, RAV4, etc??? Thanks!

    • @EngineAdventures
      @EngineAdventures  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the support! It depends on the use. I loved (and my wife loved) the 4-Runner TRD Pro. She doesn't offroad with me because she hates how rough most vehicles ride. The 4-Runner TRD Pro is super smooth and very capable. I tow a camping trailer and boats on occasion, so I like full size SUVs and trucks. The Sequoia TRD Pro is an excellent all rounder if regular off-roading is included. For very limited offroading I do like the GM SUVs with the 6.2 or 3.0 diesel. It really depends on use and personal preference. There are very few vehicles I would say "Don't buy"

    Just was on that hill yesterday. Those ruts are getting more and more intense as the months go by. I imagine with time it’s going to be pretty hard to get anything without 4low up it. We will have to get in contact. I’m in that area. I have a 2020 Tacoma TRD Off Road. My wife drives a 2017 Highlander that I did a 3in lift on. Might makes some good content haha.

    • @EngineAdventures
      @EngineAdventures  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Absolutely would make good content! I'm already a couple months out worth of vehicles I need to catch up with. Sure some of that degradation of the road is my fault.

      I'd love to, I have tested a gx 460, but it was before I started filming and before I started this course. Was out of town the last time a gx came through so hopefully I catch it the next time!

    Great video just dont know how to configure 4wd Hi or 4wd Low what are the buttons you need to use for each?

    • @EngineAdventures
      @EngineAdventures  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the support! You can shift to 4wd hi at any time under 55 mph and as long as the wheels aren't slipping. To shift to 4wd low the vehicle needs to be stopped and transmission in neutral.

  • @niuhuskieguy
    @niuhuskieguy 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    The results in 4wd high are a little surprising. I was certainly expecting more. Even the cvt equipped Subaru made it up the easy line.

    • @EngineAdventures
      @EngineAdventures  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was surprised as well. I had a limited trim 2019 Cherokee in the past (before I started doing this kind of testing) and I feel like it could have made the easy climb for sure. The hill is a little more rutted out, but in high range the Cherokee basically performed like the 2012 pilot I tested. Having said that, low range is pretty awesome in this thing!

    • @niuhuskieguy
      @niuhuskieguy 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@EngineAdventures So basically for it to be of any real use off road, you have to pony up for any awd system that is not the active drive 1.

    The key too is that snow mode starts in 2nd gear.

    • @EngineAdventures
      @EngineAdventures  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for sharing, I don't remember what I on this one, but sometimes I'll manually shift down to first gear.

    • @off-roadingexplained8417
      @off-roadingexplained8417 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@EngineAdventures Heck... sometimes I want to use snow mode because first is too low (56:1). Second gear cuts it in half...28:1. (First in 4 high is ~20:1). I feel like all of these automatic transmission four-wheel drive vehicle should all give me the option to start in second without having to do something weird like that. If I shift into second in sand mode, etc.. it will just limit to first and second gear ... it won't start in second unless I put it in snow mode.

    Was there a “traction control off” button that could be pressed? My tacoma stutters and loses a lot of power like this Rav4 did until I pressed and held the traction control button to “off.”

    • @EngineAdventures
      @EngineAdventures  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I believe there is, and I did try it. I don't remember if I held the button or not, normally I would. It turned off traction control but left the brake lock differential on, meaning no power was cut,but the brakes were applied to the spinning wheels. I believe I did that off camera.

  • @ScoobyFermentation
    @ScoobyFermentation 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    It may do better on those roads than the Toyota RAV4, but every time you hit a big bump, I was worried that the Jeep was going to break. Not something you would have to worry about as much with the Toyota. That being said, since it has 90,000 miles on it, do you know how the long-term reliability has been?

    • @EngineAdventures
      @EngineAdventures  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      He did say he's had to fix a few things here and there. It didn't seem to have ever left him stranded, but has required more maintenance than he wanted.

  • @fordfiveohh
    @fordfiveohh 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Remember that in snow mode it starts the second gear!

    • @EngineAdventures
      @EngineAdventures  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good point, I didn't even check for that, but I know many vehicles do start in second gear in snow mode.

    How do you get the lights to flash like that?

    • @EngineAdventures
      @EngineAdventures  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      LED bulbs aren't always on, they are actually flickering faster than the eye can see. Sometimes the rate at which the flicker lines up with the frames of the camera to make it a appear like it's flickering. Have you seen the video of the helicopter hovering but the blades look like they aren't moving? It's a similar effect.

    Is this 4x4 or awd?

    • @EngineAdventures
      @EngineAdventures  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'd classify it as 4x4 because it has a low range transfer case with no center differential

    • @haystephen
      @haystephen 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the quick response! There is a 2016 trailhawk up for sale by me. It has 64k on the odometer and they want $21k for it. Does that sound reasonable?

      @EngineAdventures  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Honestly I haven't followed the yard car market close enough right now to be able to give an opinion one way or the other. I do have 2 coworkers with Cherokee Trailhawks, one of them loves his, the other has had nothing but problems.

      Yeah I actually had 3 Cherokees (two before I started filming and this one from a friend) but they all had the V6s. Not sure when Jeep will send out another.

    • @fordfiveohh
      @fordfiveohh 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@EngineAdventures for what it's worth , I did the math on the wheel torque in 4 low. It's about the same because the 4 cyl (in 2016 is 56:1 and the V6 is 48:1).
      I'll put it this way... Still the 4 cylinder in 4 low can pull harder than a 5.7 tundra in 4 high (not in 4 low of course ).
      When you have the right gears... It's just mind blowing ...
      I was trying to pull a tree stump out the other day and broke a tow strap at like... 1/8 throttle in 4 low... It's just insane. And this is the 2016 2.4 L.

    • @fordfiveohh
      @fordfiveohh 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@EngineAdventures so, for off road , not really expecting a huge difference. On road , yeah the v6 will smoke it.

    • @EngineAdventures
      @EngineAdventures  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I used to see a few EV companies talking about how much torque their vehicles had at the wheels. The only problem with that is that when you actually do the math with all the gearing reduction in a vehicle with 4wd low, most of them have more torque to the wheels than an EV. I do understand it's a completely different animal and the EV will have a lot more torque to the ground for normal driving, but it's just a strange way to advertise.

    The transmission in my 2014 Trailhawk is the worst piece of junk I have ever seen. Nothing but problems with it since I bought the car.
