It's amazing how different the opinions range on this topic.
When it comes to watering, I've never heard anyone suggest watering everyday, even if using bark.

I also have some cymbidiums, so this is useful for my next repot in Spring. Thank you

I use equal mix of LFSM and Perlite for my Dens. They seem to love it.

    Hi Angel,
If I could fine charcoal that was cheap and easy to fine, I would probably add some. These items are just easy to fine in my area. I agree the premixed brands sometimes are good quality and you get all of that dust in the bottom.

Very informative. Thank you. I will certainly give some of these a try. I have found that a straight soil less potting mix such as promix works very well for me on cymbidiums. I use clay pots and it works great for me.

Love the video. Where do you get the bark? Can’t seem to find it. And what kind? My orchids are doing terrible and maybe this will help. Thanks so much

Hi Ricky, well it depends on the kind. Dendrobium cuthbertsonii will take a very different mix than dendrobium anosmum. What where you thinking?

Thank you very much for sharing your knowledge. I found this video to be one of the most informative. I recently started a collection of Paphiopedilums, my true Orchid passion, and would like to know if one type of mix (Fine Fir bark, perlite, some moss and lava rock), would work for all of them or if a certain factor should be considered according to the type in my collection. Your opinion is very appreciated.
Thanks again for all your Educational videos and I give you some of the credit for the success I have had in caring for this wonderful plants. You are a true teacher!

Thanks for this. Do you have any videos on ideal temperatures for Orchids and repotting? I live in UK and it's very difficult to grow them unless you have a heated greenhouse I think, You mentioned that you need to drive out the Tanins from the coconut husk. I just watched another video on youtube where the guy revives an orchid using mild tea solution!. What's the verdict? Thanks again.

Really helpful information! I really appreciate that all the ingredients are easy to come by here in the United States, and much less costly than the ready-made mixes.
Quick question, and I hope that you see this and are able to respond. I have two very very large cymbidium orchids that were given to me last year by an elderly lady who could no longer move them about. they are seriously pot-bound and there is no telling when the last time they were repotted. I found all the information I need as far as how to go about dividing and repotting, except for a consensus on what size and type media I should use for such large plants. I know that their roots are much larger than the smaller specimens that are usually found in 8 to 10 inch pots. Our two monstrosities are in 20 inch pots and are about three and a half feet tall. We would love to keep them quite large, just repotting to refresh the media and possibly share a few small pieces with family. Could you possibly suggest what size and type media I should be using for such large specimens? I also should add that we are in 7A and these stay in pots in our yard in the summer, greenhouse in the winter...we have very hot humid summers, so they are left in morning sun with afternoon shade.
    Thanks!

    Great video, Brad!
So you never use charcoal on your mixes?
Almost all my orchids need to be re-potted now! Normally I use commercial mix but it's getting hard to find and the quality is bad! I have coconut chips soaking right now for the last couple of days. got my bark ready and my perlite, but I was wondering about the charcoal. Commercial mixes have big chunks of it and what I found looks almost like charcoal shavings! lol
    Thanks for your video! :)

Hi, I plan on putting together the fur bark, sphagnum moss, and perlite for an orchid I need repot. How much of each would be ideal for a phalaenopsis orchid?

Hi Brad, thank you so much for the very great videos! I have been clicking, watching and learning. I, for some unknown reason, have had great luck with orchids but I really don't know what I am doing! I think they just love the area I have them growing in. (Outside, under my carport) facing east. Plus I live in Florida. It's time to repot a few, so I have been watching your videos on potting and mixing medium. Thank you again!

I just bought an oncidium and realized it had a bulb that was starting to rot, i decided to repot only to find that under the medium there was a bigger bulb that was really rotting away. Anyway I cut away the bad bulbs and repotted. So I used mostly the larger pieces of bark and spagnum moss, some perlite but not as much as you mentioned. So half spagnum and half perlite is it?

You always read about bark chips tying up the nitrogen as they break down. How are you able to have so much bark in your soil without robbing all the nitrogen to the orchids?
