    Good info for beginners. Glad to see him talk about not cutting spike off on phalaneopsis types until it is dead (no green area left) and dry all the way down - many new orchid owners lose the opportunity for rebloom on the old spikes and lots of flowers when they cut the bloom spikes off just because the current blooms are gone. I have a phal that bloomed in November and it has been in bud since - now the end of May. I cut the spike finally but it could NOT all orchid types do this - for example cattleyas don’t rebloom on the flower stalk - once the buds have emerged from the sheath - that’s it. When those are done you can remove any bits of dried sheath, flowers etc from that growth. It will only rebloom on a new growth and from a new sheath. However, the advice on not watering from above always seems contradictive as plants in the wild get rained on at least once per day to multiple times per day and even most of the day in fog for those orchids that grow high in cloud forests. Most folks fail to tell why you the difference and that it depends on your environment. I try to keep water off blooms unless they have a lot of airflow to dry them off no matter how grown and definitely don’t water anything with the full sun or even partial sun on them. Anyway - in the tropical forests most of these plants are growing upside down from how we have them in pots. In fact when you mount orchids, it is really best and more natural looking to plant upside down from how grown in a pot. This position will keep the crown area and in between the leaves drier and it won’t collect water and thus potentially cause rot. Mount phals higher on a mount and being upside down, the new leaves will grow downwards.

  • @augustine76

    I don't agree with many points, rubbing off water from orchid leaves looked funny to me. I grow the same dendeobium outdoor in Kerala and you can imagine the amount of direct rain it receives in monsoon. The plants are happy and flowering, so you are obviously wrong. Only thing is you need a drier medium (tree bark / coconut husk instead of moss) and container with better drainage. Orchids love watering and larger nurseries do misting, so water on leaves is perfect.
    Even though you mentioned phelenopsis few times, the ones you are showing is dendeobium. They are totally different, with different requirements. Dendeobium likes more light, some morning or evening light falling on them. Less sunlight, they won't flower. I have dendeobium growing in palm trees and they flower well.

    in my knowledge orchids can absorb water and nutritions through leafs stem and roots so water on leafs do nothing wrong with plants

    • @ganeshkrishnan896
      @ganeshkrishnan896 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      this plant grows in rainforest not under roof so how could these plant be so allergic with water on leaves

    • @GardeningismyPassion
      @GardeningismyPassion  6 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      They absorb water and nutrients from its roots where a velamen coated spongy tissue remains there, which help to absorb them.Yes definitely these are the plants from rain forest. But if you have ever seen those plants in its natural habitat in forest,you might have noticed that the plants stems stoop down. Therefore, water is not retained in its nodal region.When we grow them in pots we keep them straight for its good look. My only point was not to allow the water to be retained in its nodal region.

    • @VGlauren
      @VGlauren 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Epiphytic orchids don't grow upright like the way we keep them in pots, they hang upside down from trees, so water runs off the leaves instead of pooling in the crown. When keeping orchids upright in captivity, water sitting in the crown can cause rot.

    • @SSheriff49
      @SSheriff49 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ganesh Krishnan ...for those plants which don't grow in rain forest....and for a layman who has little idea or knowledge about epipytes....I think it is a very vital tip. There must be NO standing moisture orchids rot easily.sadly in a pot they are grown upright.in nature they make their adjustments.

      There are many types of orchids. Many. Some DO need air conditioning! So need very bright light....others low light. Some want to be wet constantly. Others need to be dry between watering a, others need an entire dry season (usually winter). In other words orchids are a HUGE group.
      Research them. Pick the plants that you can provide the environment they require! Happy growing ✨🥰

    Sir, I like watching all your videos. They are very informative & easy to understand. Please answer my question regarding dendrobium orchid plant, How long it takes a dendrobium seedling to bloom( or produce flowers)?

    Nice hearing from a qualified botanist. Your teaching method is very simple and informative. which can be understood by anybody interested in the field.
    I have a doubt. We know orchids are rain forest plants. Then why do you insist that it should be watered only at the roots. In its natural setting in forest it is subjected to rain which wets everywhere of the plant.
    Another question, is there anything wrong in exposing the plants in a rainy season keeping it under a tree. We in Kerala have almost 6 months rain.

      In nature the plants natural inclination is downward , in Pots we grow them upright
