    I've LOVED the Rails to Trails rides I've done. 7 day Michigander is where I blew out my R knee, thus, need a Class 1 electric bike now. So glad they are available.

    I’ve been watching your channel ever since we bought our Sprinter van 4+ years ago. We were in Anza riding our bikes about 6 weeks ago. I would have loved running into you. 😃 You inspired me to buy a Rad Mini St a year ago and I love it. My hubby missed out, by the time he was ready to get his bike they discontinued the Mini. He ended hp getting the Lectric xp.
    We bought the 1Up bike rack last July with a cargo add on and I think it is the best rack on the market. We also got the ramp but stopped using it. It sometimes was more of a pain than just lifting our bikes up together. Your new bikes look pretty awesome.

    We have folding e-bikes from Tern. They’re 48 pounds and store inside our van. They’re a bit pricey, so it’s much less stressful than having them outside.

    I have a class two e bike it does 23 mi an hour and I love the throttle to get me across Roads very limited with class 1 e-bike😮 nice thing about throttles if your chain breaks or messes up you can always throttle home you can't do that with a mid motor bike and that's another reason to get a hub drive motor mid motors are very hard on chains

    • @FromShetoMe
      @FromShetoMe  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      For sure a throttle is nice. But we think they are going to start clamping down on Class 2/3 ebikes. They have become so popular that issues are starting to pop up on trails. At least out here where we live. Lots of user groups are coming out against all ebikes and I'm guessing the compromise will be to limit trails to Class 1 only. We actually may sell our RAD ebikes and get a small mid drive like the Reise-Muller Tinker. But it will be a belt and not a chain.

    i have had numerous specialized mountain bikes, they are an older top notch company ! so their name alone on your bike helps disguise the fact your on an ebike ! i wear baggy mt bike shorts that have 3 pockets ! most of my numerous jerseys have pockets, i dont like shorts that have the pad attached, i have numerous pads to rotate with my shorts. here in helena we have a large and popular trails system, very popular with dog walkers, hikers, runners, and mt bikers. they nipped e bikes out in a hurry, speed and such a wide variety of users were the main reason ! your presentation covered a lot of ground and was excellent ! tell john, i dislocated my shoulder on april 1st and ended up in emergency room in scottsdale..[ got back on the steel horse in a week but rode slow, carefully and easy trails !

    Hi Debbie, We met briefly at the Pleasure Way rally in St John, NB. I mention that I'd duplicated your RIP/tire upgrades and was very happy with the results. You asked if I'd replaced the refrigerator too and I said I hadn't and didn't have a problem with it. You gave me "the look" and I took it seriously - now replaced with the same as yours and again, thanks. New question: I see you've replaced your spare tire carrier. Can you tell me what brand/model you now have? Thanks.

    • @FromShetoMe
      @FromShetoMe  ปีที่แล้ว

      I hope you only replaced your fridge if you were having an issue with it. We upgraded our brakes and tires when we got back from that trip. But the spare tire holder is the same one we’ve had for years. John recommends that you get a holder with a ladder attached so that you can attach other things to it. I was pleasantly surprised to see your new bikes. I’m an avid mountain biker, about three years ago I bought a bike similar to your Specialized (another brand) and I love it. I Still bring my none electrified bike with me but only use it when forced by regulations. As you mentioned this class of mid-drive, large wheels e-bikes equipped with good drive train and brakes are very capable mountain bikes, (but as you found, no bike is really any good in deep send). In the last ten years I’ve transported my bikes for thousands of miles using the 1up hitch rack and it is rock solid, but like you I’m looking forward to carry the bikes inside the van I’m currently converting.

    We are newer RV’rs, ages 64 and 71, and bought Rad minis 2 yrs ago. We love them in spite of their weight. We have a good system of teamwork for racking them on our Hollywood rack. But my concern is the growing tendency to ban class 2 bikes from trails. We can’t go any faster than class 1’s. As senior recreational bikers, these bikes really allow us to take on longer, more challenging trails that we might not otherwise attempt. We rely on our throttles as little as possible to maximize the exercise benefits, but sometimes we need a little help. We can do a 40 mile ride, but not if we throttle too much., so we pedal as much as possible. We are always courteous to others on the trails, not running anyone off their path. In June we leave on a 3 month road trip out west and north and we plan to use our Rads everywhere, hoping we’re not stopped. I just don’t understand why the class 2’s get lumped in with the faster class 3’s on these bans. I would hope that the biking community would look to support class 2 e-bikes on trails, which will undoubtedly keep more people like us out on the trails, and more trail users will generate support for more trails. We donate to Rails-to-Trails AND we pay taxes. Arrrgh! I’m so frustrated about this. There just seems to be no justification for banning class 2 e-bikes.

    • @FromShetoMe
      @FromShetoMe  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree completely and have been frustrated with it. In most places it is an answer looking for a problem. But there are a few who have ruined it for the rest of us; kind of like areas where we used to disperse camp but the trash and human waste got so bad they had to be shut down.

      @@FromShetoMe I just read that Minnesota state law specifically allows Class 1,2 and 3 e-bikes on state trails (yay!) but rider must be at least 15 years old. That’s a step in the right direction. They also require an audible signal be used when passing others on the trail. We always do that!

    Just watched Humble Road and got a quick peak of your new van. George has really got his future work cut out for he and his team. Great video today on bikes. I like what you have figured out for yourselves. I have a 2 bike system. I have the new Hollywood Destination E, 2 bike rack, that I use for a non electric bike and the Doheny fat tire folding ebike. The rack comes with a ramp so I can "one person" them up on the rack. I also have the rack on a swing-away. It tested well last year and so it's a keeper for me. I'm anxious to see the cover you are designing for the bikes, looks like a great idea. Thanks for the link for the padded brief. I have a padded seat cover that I added to my seat, so much better. Great video and explanations for what is a very technical and overwhelming subject for most people! We think sources of information like yours are super valuable, as the American bike companies have been focused on sport cycling (racing and high performance) while the e-bike market in the US has been primarily centered around the age 50-70 age demographic that are not interested in racing their bike. (With more than 1 million e-bikes sold in the US last year, the American bike companies are starting to wake up.)
    My wife and I have also had too many bikes over the years, and have owned 8 e-bikes beginning with the early Class 2 in 2008. We now have tens of thousands of miles on e-bikes. Four of our six current e-bikes are high end, European Class 1 mid-drive with Bosch or Shimano power with torque sensors. Two of the six are the newer Class 2/Class 3 - but also come with torque sensors (however, we remove the throttle and limit the speed by software to convert to Class 1).
    These torque sensor versions of "value-priced e-bikes" (ie Bafang powered - by brands such as Aventon) ride dramatically different to the cadence sensor value-priced Class 2 e-bikes (ie Bafang powered but with cadence sensors - eg Rad, Lectric, etc.). Torque sensors kick in the e-assist right away from a stop and tailor the e-assist to how hard you are pedaling. Being value-priced, these bikes are still very heavy.
    Cadence sensor bikes pretty much must have a throttle, as the cadence sensor will always have a lag kicking in - for safety. The cadence sensor bike does not adjust e-assist to how hard you pedal.
    In our experience, the torque vs cadence sensor makes the most difference in riding experience. Obviously, as you found, the more expensive bikes are also much lighter and have better components - such as brakes.

    One really nice feature of my Class 3/2 Lectric 1.0 is the “Walk Mode” which will slowly propel the bike up steep inclines or stairs. This should be standard even on Class 3 ebikes. The only negative to my 2019 (bleeding edge) Electric 1.0 is its weight of 60 lbs. It is so heavy that unassisted pedaling is an issue. But fast-forward 3 years and many of the new ebikes are 38-45 lbs - perfect.

    Suggestion - Our State Park Ranger Policeman son tells us that the cheap electronic alarms work quite well in their campgrounds. He has gotten reports from people hearing the alarm, looking out their window only to see someone running away. I am really curious to see how you can configure your new van to hold your bikes and still have enough room inside. We love our Ontour 2.2 for the 79” bed that fits my 6’5” frame and a bathroom I fit in. I would love to fit our bikes inside but not enough to give up those two things. I am with your son kick stands for your new bike. My wife keeps wanting one and I keep telling her we didn’t spend thousands of dollars to take a little weight off only to add it back on. We do have kick stands on our ebikes which are already way too heavy.

    Totally agree on 1UP rack. I assume your tire issues have been solved with new bikes tubless tires/rims? Here's the belll I use that does not clutter bar, has a good tone and probabaly weighs 2/3 less than John's. Also, why have you not worn a helmet in some of your recent videos (concerned for your safety😶)?

    Very helpful, thanks! I researched e-bikes for a year and really wanted the 4” tires for dirt roads, but the models that had them were all too heavy. Like you, anything lighter than the Rads was a top priority. (We’re your same age and also longtime cyclists.). My husband insisted on hydraulic brakes for safety. My other priorities- low step and foldable for carrying inside our van, even though both features add a little weight. I do like having a throttle for starting out. I compromised with 2.5” tires, and now I really don’t like riding on gravel/dirt roads. Disappointing.
    I got a Magnum and my husband chose a Tern. Compared to my old featherweight road bike, at around 50-55 lbs, they both still weigh a ton and are difficult to load in and out of the van. (For me at least.)
    Do you miss having 4” tires?
    PS-Accessories: I like a front basket and I upgraded to a softer seat. Sorta helps.

      @FromShetoMe  ปีที่แล้ว

      I think your comments will be helpful to others. We are surprised at how well our smaller tires work on gravel/sand. They do have aggressive treads so maybe that’s the difference.

    We are looking to upgrade from Lectric primarily because they don't have suspension for rougher roads. But our knees can't get us up hills anymore without the throttle. Is there any accomodation for disabled riders to use Class 2 on Class 1 trails. Other than excluding less able riders, I don't see the point of differentiating between Class 1 and 2.

    • @FromShetoMe
      @FromShetoMe  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm probably not a good source on helmets as I have so many, none of which I am in love with. John says just make sure you get one with the mips system. He and our son like Smith and Specialized. The one I usually wear is a Bell because it is the lightest of our helmets and I seem to be really sensitive to weight on my head (probably due to a concussion I got when I was a teenager). I find all helmets to be ill fitting and need to go on a shopping trip to try on a bunch of helmets. As far as looking good, I guess beauty is in the eye of the beholder and I find all of them to be pretty ugly. But if they do the job, and fit, we'll keep wearing them. Let me know if you hit the jackpot.

    Class 2 E-bike all the way even for commuting. You can use it "exactly" like a class one e-bike however have the complete flexibility of using it or not, can be very handy getting across a intersection quicker etc. Secondly many E-bikes can be changed to go faster than 20mph, mine was as simple as changing it in the options like a alarm clock, others need a bit of a hack.

    • @FromShetoMe
      @FromShetoMe  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I agree having a throttle is really nice, but more and more trails are limiting e-bikes to Class 1. So it just depends on how and where you plan to use your bikes.
