Hi Fran, this is the first time I have watched your video. I was searching on TH-cam "how to pick a pattern for a quilt that gives a sense of peacefulness and calmness". And you came up. I learned so much just from watching your video on how to pick fabrics. I have to say that some of the fabrics I thought were ugly and you made them look amazing together. I don't know if you will ever see this but I have an ugly fabric collection that someone gifted to me a layer cake and as if that was not enough a jelly roll of the same fabric to go together. Ok it's not ugly but the colors are on the depressing side. But you put together some fabrics that I would never have picked and you made them shine. My fabric kit is an old, old fabric from many years ago. It is called Gobble, Gobble by Sandy Gervais I think. She still has that collection and many of the same fabrics but she has added some happy yellows and the new oranges are happier too. I was thinking I would add some of those happy colors but I cannot pick a happy background The colors that would go for as a background are very depressing, to me. Maybe I could use those happy yellows as a background. If you ever see this message I hope you can give me some ideas That can perk up this fall collection. Thank you so much for a very informative video. It was like something just clicked.😃
Great show, Fran! Explaining WHY things are done is so helpful. I’ve made Sugar Pie, and love it. I just finished my 13th 3-yard quilt….it’s Stepping Stone. I had to get a D-ring binder to hold all my patterns & books. I also love the spreadsheets to keep track of what I have.
FRAN DEAR, l just have to say it: You have the loveliest smile! Your cheery face brightens my day every time l see you in a video! God bless your sweet heart!
Love this episode. You made sense to me, while explaining how you chose the fabrics. Thank you. Also love when you show the digital pattern with your fabric.
That 1st kit really is a “yowser”. Although I think the second one might be a “yowser” as well. You gave nice directions on how to chose fabrics that go with a particular pattern. It was very helpful. Thank you.
Great tips and explanations! Thanks for sharing your knowledge! Beautiful fabrics that make beautiful quilts!! I personally love Sew Quick for my go to pattern.
I have nearly all your books, and have made 3 quilt tops in the last 3 days! I have no intention of stopping and have another 10 sets of 3yds ready to go, just having difficulty deciding which patterns to choose as I have so many to choose from 🥰
Hello Fran and team: do you ever think about using panels. Usually they are only 23" wide, so I understand that might now be in the wheelhouse of 3-yard quilts. I need some support in figuring out how to embrace the panel and make a beautiful quilt too!
Hi Roxanna! We don't have any 3-yard patterns specifically written to use panels. However, some of our patterns will work. Check our patterns for block sizes that will work with your panel size. Often blocks can be cut from the smaller panel prints. We did a video on using panels in a 3-yard quilt that may spark some ideas - th-cam.com/video/K5uaIi5c9sg/w-d-xo.html
Ok. Can I please have two go to patterns??? I have made both Brick Street and Broad Strokes several times, all with wonderful results. I used to do almost strictly scrap quilts, but love the simplicity and charm of Three Yard Quilts, videos and all your wonderful staff members. 🙂❤️
Thanks Fran - another great "how to do it". I have made quite a few of your patterns, I have all your books except the newest one, and love them all. Please continue to inspire us. I have thought about sending my yard of hard to match fabric to see if you could help me figure out what to do, but not sure I would get it back if it is not one you choose for your matchmaker series. But I learn so much from watching you.
I'm just getting into making quilts and your 3 yard quilts are the perfect starter quilts for me. That being said, I'm trying to find a video on squaring up the blocks, do you have one???
Hello Fran I'm rewatching this video, and i have some fabric from a previous order, from fabric Cafe. That I think would look good in the dash pattern. Because these particular fabric choices, are different colors. Of the same print. And the contrast color of course will make it perfect. Thank you for this video and I'm glad that I could watch it on the replay to make other choices with fabric Cafe patterns.
So I'm thinking it's time to re-think Fabric Cafe Utube. Tuesday and Thursday are too far to wait until the next video... Please think about Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. it's just hard to wait for the next video. I love all videos, staff, and family at Fabric Cafe .
I'm a traditional person! I love to make traditional quilts! I did, however, buy the Alice in Wonderland Tula Pink fabric because I'm an Alice fan! Now I don't know what pattern to use!
Love your quilts, I am looking for direction on how to enlarge the checkmate and the big picture patterns I have looked on your Webseite and haven't found it can you tell me where to fine the direction at
Hi Rita! Glad to hear! Do you happen to have an older book with both of these patterns or just have them individually? Both of these patterns did not come with enlargements on the first edition of "3-Yard Quilts for Kids," however, we have recently added enlargements to all of those patterns in the 2nd edition book that you can find here - www.fabriccafe.com/3-Yard-Quilt-for-Kids-Pattern-Book-2nd-Edition-p/032242.htm | If you happen to have just the individual patterns we do not offer enlargements for the single patterns at this time, only in the books. Hope that helps!
Interesting in the digital image of kit fabric, the no 1 is used as the border not no 3 as per the red quilt. Just curious as this wasn't mentioned. I actually prefer it though in that kit 😊
Hi Helena! Whups! That was an error when creating the digital image, it should actually be the burgundy red in this case and the no. 1 fabric is used for the binding.
Hello! Great question! For the standard lap size quilt you will need 3-yards of 44" wide fabric. We have a free sheet on our website that will assist with adding backing to your 3-yard quilt. You can find that here - www.fabriccafe.com/Preparing-Backing-for-3-yard-Quilt-p/991801.htm If you are using a directional fabric or adding backing to a queen/king size then you will need additional yardage for the back. We have free guides on all of these options on our website under the "Free Goodies" tab! 😊 Hope that helps!
Love the information in the video. Fantastic colour theory style lesson without being boring BUT I ended up having to watch it with the sound off and subtitles on because your necklace kept hitting the microphone as you moved 🙁 sorry Fran...
Gosh Brenda, I feel that’s such an unnecessary negative comment. For those of us who are new to quilting or not as experienced as you perhaps are, they’re simply amazing and comments like this could easily make someone less experienced feel very inadequate. Thanks Fabric Cafe for all the information and instructions. I really appreciate it.
Well Brenda, I can definitely say that you are just skimming the surface with Fabric Cafe. Yes they sell fabric to go with the patterns/ books, and they are not inexpensive, but there is so much more. I have the books, but have not availed myself of the fabric. I began quilting later in life with a ‘make it up as you go along ‘ mindset. Very haphazard, very time consuming, results were great, but needed to make it happen faster and with more of a plan. Have learned that 3 fabrics: a focus, and two more, one darker than the other, is all you need to get a great result. Have learned to pay attention to size of blocks, size of quilts ( they always give 4 sizes ) . I look at patterns from other guys in a different light. Always ask myself is there a focus, a contrast and a second focus…. Love changing things up to suit myself and the recipient. In particular, Fran is coming up with more challenging blocks too. Although I do love Donna Jordan and Missouri Star, it is Fabric Cafe and 3 yard quilts that have allowed me to be confident and have the skills to attempt other companies’ patterns too, knowing the results will be a success . That’s my take. 🧵🪡🥰💕
I love it when you show images of the quilts in the kit fabrics. Sometimes its hard to see the finished quilt in my head and the images help so much!!
Me, too. It helps me to see what the fabrics are going to look like together
Teresa I feel the same way about those images. I’m not good with colors and to see the images help me dream about some fabrics.
I love when you show the digital quilts.
Always look forward to Fabric Cafe quilt videos

Very helpful video. I make many many of your 3 yard quilt patterns.
Love this episode today! Learned a lot and Fran you are amazing when you audition the quilt blocks! Thank you 🪡🧵🌻

My favorite 'go to' pattern is Checkmate from the 3-Yard Quilts for Kids!
Excellent video explaining fabric/pattern choices. Thank you!
Love this episode. You made sense to me, while explaining how you chose the fabrics. Thank you. Also love when you show the digital pattern with your fabric.

Made the Traditions pattern & loved it.

You are inspiring. I bet your quilts are beautiful.
Great show Fran good information to have when making choices on quilts.
Great video Fran. My fave in this bunch is Wave the Flag. So pretty. ❤🤍💙

Thank you Fran, this was a great episode! So much good information.
I love Picture Perfect with an ombré as the #2 :)
Great show Fran! I need to pull out those 3 yards I got from you at Houston and apply those. I have your books. Beautiful show.
Wonderful video, Fran! In learned so much. Thanks to you and Fabric Cafe!
So educational! Thank you.

Late to the party. Fran, you are a very good teacher!
Awesome video and love them all!!!
Working on Dash now. Double focus fabric.
Love the quilts and all of the tips and insights 😊

Love “yowzer”
Genius!
Hi Fran! Can you make “It’s a Snap” as a scrap quilt?
So I'm thinking it's time to re-think Fabric Cafe Utube. Tuesday and Thursday are too far to wait until the next video... Please think about Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. it's just hard to wait for the next video. I love all videos, staff, and family at Fabric Cafe .
I disagree. They should be every day but they can have the weekends off😂.
I disagree! I vote for 7 days a week, I LOVE, LOVE these videos 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
Watching a year later! Of course the kits aren't available now, but the lessons are still pertinent😊
Yes they are!
I'm a traditional person! I love to make traditional quilts! I did, however, buy the Alice in Wonderland Tula Pink fabric because I'm an Alice fan! Now I don't know what pattern to use!
Do the pattern books show how to increase the size of the quilt? I like some of these patterns, and would like to make in twin size, maybe larger.
Yes! Each of our book includes instructions to upsize to a twin and a queen/king. 😊
Love your quilts, I am looking for direction on how to enlarge the checkmate and the big picture patterns I have looked on your Webseite and haven't found it can you tell me where to fine the direction at

This is in the first quilt.

Hi again. Do u have a video on the attic window quilt. I want the whole kit and caboodle. Material book and video please
No, we don't have that one.
My daughter asked for a black, gray and white fabrics. Do you have ant focus fabrics with those colors?
Check out our Web Store fabriccafe.com. Just search on the color to see what is we have.
How many yards are needed on back fabric for 3 yard quilts?

Thanks for still being able to watch! We'll be more careful about the necklace 😉
🥰
🤍☺️🤍
Sorry, but there is nothing interesting or unique about those quilts. I think the 3 yard quilt stuff is just about selling overpriced fabric.
Thanks for the feedback, Brenda! So sorry they are not your cup of tea 😊
