This list looks fantastic, will really help me in my first car camping trip! I was looking for ideas that wasn't pre-made backpacker meal bags and not needing a cooler, and this delivered!! However it's really lacking in veggies info, which is really needed for some people to keep things going smoothly. If you have any ideas for veggies without a cooler that'd be great please! :) Keep up the awesome content.
@@yulan0921 carrots are my go-to! They last several days outside of the fridge/cooler. Cucumbers will do well for 2 days, tomatoes keep well for more than a week (but they're delicate, so you have to keep them in a container). Peppers, zucchinis, and eggplants also last 2-3 days (even more if it's not too hot) outside of the fridge/cooler. You can also buy or make dehydrated veggies :)
Backpacking I use a zip lock bag with some Aunt Jemima ( just add water ) pancake mix in it. On the bag I put the water amount needed. In camp add the water , squish it around to mix it. Then take a knife and cut off a small corner of the bag. Using the zip lock like a pastry bag squeeze out the amount needed in a small non stick backpacking pan.I like the 6 inch one from Evernew in titanium and none stick. When the stack of pancakes are done I use individual packs of Honey as syrup on them. The individual packs of different flavored jells ( you get with toast at the restaurant ) also works quite well.
Individual peanut butter/nut butter, seed spread, jam, honey, maple syrup, salsas, taco sauce, mayo, mustard, ketchup, relish, humus, black bean dip, pinto dip, chocolate, bone broth, olive oil, butter, coconut milk, coffee, tea, 3 in one coffee mixes, cocoa packets etc (There are even dual packets of nut butter and jam/chocolate and also chia jam too!) There are so many good individual packets of stuff now.
when you're making pancake mix, put it in a squirty bottle, like a cleaned out ketchup bottle. that's what i have. then just squeeze it directly into the pan.
In Canada we have a product called Milk2Go, it comes in small 200ml bottles (less than a cup of liquid, a US cup is 237ml) but it's shelf-stable for several months without refrigeration as it is ultra high temperature pasteurized. Very handy when camping.
I discovered powdered whole milk in the Mexican food aisle. NIDO is the brand and it makes a better milk, not as watery as 2% etc powdered milk. Also, you should put the tortilla in your skillet (or over a flame) before using. Uncooked tortillas right out of the package are hard to digest. After building your tortilla meal, you can also put it back in the skillet to get some color.
Glad you mentioned the ramen its a staple especially to Koreans thats probably #1 for our list xD. We always make a variation called (Budae Jjigae) Korean Army Stew. So you cook ramen and add some eggs some spam (i know most ppl hate spam you can sub w/sausage or ham) and add some vegetables and aromatics. Then everyone digs in on one giant pot!
Pepperoni that doesn't need refrigeration great for your pasta and marinara sauce with pasta. Also vacuum packed cheese sticks. Fresh Yard eggs are good for up to two weeks no refrigeration, do not wash til you use.
PS contrary to popular belief eggs do not need to be kept refrigerated you don’t want them hot but room temp is perfectly fine, also they have shelf stable precrooked bacon, a great alternative to dry cereal or pancakes. Something about bacon and eggs camping makes me smile 😊.
Not the eggs from the grocery stores they have been washed and lose the coating they need to be stored in the fridge. Farm fresh eggs that aren’t washed can be kept out of the fridge though.
That's not true. If you have farm fresh eggs that come straight from your chicken then they can be set out at room temperature. If you have eggs from the grocery store, they have to be refrigerated because they are washed and soaked which ruins the outer shell and does not protect it from bacteria anymore. So eggs from the grocery store have to be refrigerated.
A agree about the eggs. But I have wondered about recoating store bought eggs in some sort of oil to replace the natural coating or possibly storing them in ash. I’ve seen this done before but not sure if it was done with store bought eggs and if so, were the bacteria levels tested to see if it worked….ill be going down the rabbit hole now. Also if you like pickled eggs, that may be an option, although again, not sure if bacteria levels have been tested after not being refrigerated.
My husband is about to retire and we are about to start camping. Your channel is EXACTLY what we were looking for to know where to start and what to cook, pack, etc. Subscribed!
I never thought I would, but added Textured Vegetable Protein (TVP) to my camp box pantry. When rehydrating it, I use packaged gravy mix to taste as a seasoning which it takes the flavor of. Brown gravy, pot roast seasoning, taco seasoning... and you've got a good protein.
TVP look like a powdered form of soya chunks (mostly available in Indian stores). Even after rehydrating, TVP have some raw flavor after. Any suggestions to improve them !!
I loved boxed soup at camp. Last year I made tomato soup and served it with fresh bread from a little bakery in town near the campground. So delicious! Another tip: check out bakeries and cafés if you are near a town for any extras to round out a meal, like cinnamon buns. We wrapped in tinfoil later that night and had ooey-gooey amazing and warm cinnamon buns.
I love that these are also great products to keep on hand for people living in earthquake prone areas or natural disasters like tornados! Because these are good for emergency kits!
I love that these are things that kept my teens from "starvinggggg" over the years! 😊 Hubs and I are embarking on our own excursions minus the kids and these ideas are what we do on a daily basis give/take. Less is more🏕️
I live off my motorcycle full time and going to store is a rare thing and space is at a premium. I do find that tortillas instead of bread pack better and last so much longer. Peanut butter/honey tortilla rollups are a go to Thanks for a great video
I’m guessing to sleep in a tent. My family use to tent camp in the mountains when we were much younger…….I honestly never thought about wild animals coming inside our tent. Oh the joy of being young, adventurous, un afraid and a lot uneducated about creatures in the night (or day). Be safe in your journey living life in the fullest.
Great suggestion! For me if rain is in the forecast a couple extra things I bring are extra dry socks, rain jacket or poncho, and a couple of extra towels. A camp stove has saved me when it may be difficult to start/keep a fire in rainy weather. Also if you have the room in your vehicle a canopy is a life saver!
I take the instant stuffing mix with me and you can use it on just about anything. Especially thickening soups and it goes well with the instant potatoes and canned chicken.
Make your own freeze dried meals has been game changer for us. We invested in a freeze dryer and it has made camping/back packing so easy and the meals taste unbelievable. Keep waiting for you to show this.
While ramen continues to have its place as a cornerstone camping food, I've recently started using dried Lomein noodles with a high quality bullion, which makes for a nice change.
@@jamespayette7574 I believe Better Than Bullion requires refrigeration once opened, because it's so concentrated unless you are cooking for a crowd you will use just tiny bit at a time.
@@kitty4536 Better than Bouillon should start making little sealed cube packs that could be opened individually. I don’t think companies realize how many people camp and/or supply up for emergencies.
One thing I do is make mac&cheese with 1 pound of dried macaroni noodles, a can of evaporated milk, and a small block of velveera-type cheese. None of it needs refrigeration, and it makes enough for our family. I also sometimes bring flavored boxed rice and cook it up with whatever leftover veggies I have and add canned chicken to it for a type of fried rice.
Thank you. These are great ideas. I work in remote locations and in areas where fast food is not always convenient. I keep some of these thing in my work truck and now, thanks to you I'll have a even better selection.
I'm 100% vegetarian for 49 years. You can get tofu in box containers that don't need refrigeration from Amazon (I had some for a year till I used it up.) Mix it with quick cooking quinoa (10 minutes once boiled.) Cook tofu in butter and soy sauce. Another vegetarian dinner is Worthington canned vegie chicken. I cook some potatoes to go with it. Trader Joe's has some good Indian food packets. Also they have an artichoke antipasto. I cook some noodles and mix in the antipasto that comes in a glass jar. Also, though we drink fresh milk at home, when we go camping we take boxed almond milk. That way we can take all the "milk" we need for the trip without having to take up cooler space.
Hi Amanda! Love your stuff. Fire season on the west coast means that many fire bans are happening and some even restrict propane use. Would you consider no-cook meals? I'd watch the crap out of it. Keep up the amazing content!
I’ve been looking at this. Did you know hummus can be frozen? Yes, it needs a cooler but should easily last several days as it thaws. That’s something I plan to do for an upcoming desert car camping trip.
Good ideas, thanks. To expand on the oatmeal, I use one packet of instant oatmeal with dried fruit and either quick oats or old fashioned oats, add cold or hot water and stir in powered milk or even a non-dairy creamer.
Often overlooked foods in the grocery store - Falafel and Hummus mix. Spicy Mediterranean goodness. Wrap in pita or tortillas w some olives and/or veggies. Plain yogurt w a touch of soy sauce and garlic for sauce.
I have the very same cooking setup for my hunting/camping adventures. However, I like to use the freeze dried meals where I just add hot water to avoid nuisance bears. I keep everything locked up in my truck or cargo trailer until I need a meal. I keep all food smells out of my tent.
Thank you Amanda for all that you do for the outdoor camping/hiking community I always find great value and new ideas in every video you post keep up the Awesome! Work
One of my "go to" meals is the noodles and sauce packets and add the tuna or beef to it. Found usually by the potato packets at the store. I have also added things like corn or carrots or green beans. It's a whole meal in one pot!
Huge fan of the Idahoan potatoes... Careful though, some require butter and milk, so get the ones that only need water for backpacking. Also, marinate/rub steaks and freeze them. Then they are your ice pack and you can feast the first night! 👍🥩 Great videos Amanda, keep it up!
Every single one of those items sounded easy and delicious! I'm going camping for the first time next weekend and I'm definitely gonna bring some ramen with me! I'd bring shells and cheese but it sounds harder to clean!
Girl you always have the best ideas!! Some of these meals are staples when we camp (we have a 10 year old daughter and she LOVES camping pancakes!!) An idea to pair with tuna is cook some of those noodle packs (like the brand Knorr) and mix in the tuna and about a half a can of drained peas. I make this easy dish and usually use the Alfredo flavor. Happy camping!! 🏕️😊
Love this!! Definitely helps me out because I tend to overthink foods for camping 😅 This may sound silly, but when cooking pasta, do you just drain the noodles away from your campsite?
Great ideas! Thanks for sharing them. Another item is Hormel entrees on the grocery shelf near the canned meats, etc. There microwavable, but we just open them and heat them in a pan. My grandson loves the Chicken Alfredo.
Lucky find. Very informative video. We are planning a cross country road trip. Food and Ice management is a factor. I sooooo agree with you regarding No cooler foods. I’ve started eyeing camping food at the grocery store…such as non perishable proteins. I’m 63 so spam is still Delicious 🤣😂. In closing, try Ezekiel bread. Vacuum seal two slices. Great bread- nutritious food. Great to the point informed video👍
Thank you so much for all your meal suggestions. I'm watching and thinking "Duh ! Why didn't I think of that". I hate taking a cooler. Takes up so much room in the car and everything thaws out so fast or gets wet (if you add a bag of ice). Will definitely buy some of these products and try them on my next camping trip.
Our family favorite camping dish that doesn’t require a cooler…and old pioneer dish …red flannel hash…. Easiest is a can of corned beef hash and a can of shredded or diced beets …even people who normally don’t like beets often enjoy this dish…. A bit more involve is to dice and pan fry fresh potatoes and onion …add a can of corn beef and diced beets …..
Hi Amanda! Yes I am so glad I came across this video... I am living down in Alabama ..the heat index is in the mid to high 90's with 90% humidity.. I do put damp rid hanging bags in my van and it keep all my dry foods in a cooler (no ice) just to keep the excess heat away from everything... Plus I put reflectix on the inside n out side if it .. I keep the cooler inside the van .but I'm working too..so.. It sits in the van in the hottest part of the day
Yes these are super fantastic ideas even though I'd substitute non-dairy for dairy for myself. Thank you! Your channel is one of the outdoor channels standing out most to me lately. Great channel. Happy travels to you
Thank you for this!!! We are going on a road trip soon and will be camping some nights and we dont want to have to keep our cooler cold throughout the whole trip
We love ❤️ Kodiak pancakes. I make rice and beans and put them on tortillas for burritos. Suddenly Salad salads are a favorite meal option for us when we go camping.
Really great video for food choices. To save on pack space for a camping trip! Because Coolers and firewood are the two of the items that takes up alot of pack space in the car. Much appriciated!
I use vanilla carnation Instant Breakfast packets instead of plain powdered milk it adds a bunch of extra calories vitamins and some delicious vanilla flavor
I'm trying to keep packaging at a minimum, and prefer basic ingredients that can be used for many different recipes. Ideally they're also good to produce something edible when there's nothing to safely cook with for whatever reason (stormy weather on boats, bone-dry landscape on land, restrictions). A favourite staple of mine fitting that pattern would be oat flakes: muesli: throw in some trail mix or fresh fruit, add cold milk. Or, for porridge, cubed apple, cinnamon, a bit of sugar, hot water - let steep some, add milk. Soup: replaces rice, lentils, whatever would go into a broth - together with instant veggie soup and hot water, it's a quick meal if hot water is all that's available.
I just tried a new dessert. I put a Jello pudding packet in a freezer bag with 1/3 cup of NIDO. On trail add 10oz of cold water into bag and stir with a spoon for a couple minutes. Have pudding in about 10 minutes.
Another idea: lots of people don't realize how easy it is to make beef jerky. It's just any 'round' cut of meat called top, bottom, or eye of round at grocery store. Take 1 cup soy sauce, half cup worshstshire, teaspoon and a half of onion powder, half or full teaspoon of Garlic pow, pepper to taste, and a pince of seasoned salt, or smoked paprika only if your feeling it. Mix w a lb or half lb of beef and throw in oven on lowest setting. Check everything thirty min til done. Delish my friends.
Here is a great video on making your own jerky. Just remember if you do not add curing salts it shortens the shelf life and probably should be refrigerated! th-cam.com/video/gkkZZPh9NbM/w-d-xo.html
Thanks for the great video! Went car camping last week in 105 degree weather. We went through 125lbs of ice to keep perishables cold. Next time we are definitely limiting what we are bringing in a cooler! Jockeying coolers around a camp site to stay out of the sun was not fun!!
Simple meal precook hamburgers and micro wave potatoes. Burgers can be eaten cold as well as potatoes. potatoes can be cooked in minutes for any number of things in many ways. Cooked burgers can be carried for day's wrapped in foil. Burger can be used in stew chili spaghettis or any thing else.
Thank you so much!! So handy to have all these ideas in one place. I hadn't heard of the tuna before. Some of them are so obvious but easy to overlook, so thank you for enumerating!!!
I love these ideas because I don’t wanna sit there and have to go to the city to get ice only problem is I just found out why I’m sick as I have severe IBS so now to find Mills that go with that

So glad you like the meal ideas! Exercises to get ready for hiking would be a great video idea. I would love to have a trainer or fitness professional on the channel to talk about that. Personally, I really enjoy lifting weights, HIIT workouts, and Crossfit. Welcome to the channel!
banana in a tortilla, mash up the banana in/on the tortilla, and add a Tbl or 2 of Peanut Powder and some raisins... yummm... I keep a few MREs and some Mountain House meals in the car food box for when I just don't feel like cooking......
When my friend and I go fly fishing/camping we do peanut butter and granola...it's similar to the peanut butter and trail mix, but w/ a little dark chocolate it melts a little in the pack and is sooooo good. Thanks!
Yeah I travel light when I go camping. I want to spend my time hiking, fishing, exploring. Tuna, ramen, cliff bars, tortillas and squeeze butter. Catch fish, eat crawdads to supplement and live good in the outdoors.
In the UK & Europe there is another tasty option to remember... eggs (& a bit of powdered milk) for cheese or mushroom omelettes (Fortunately our eggs don't need to be refrigerated)
Standard cheap boxed mac n cheese requires milk and butter but for about $0.50 more (generic) you can get mac n cheese with a packet of premade cheese sauce. So much better than the mix kind and easily worth the bit more.
Great video! Just got back from car camping and utilized some of these great ideas!👍 Can you do a video on deterring bears or other predatory animal and mosquitos while camping? Do you hang your food to avoid the bears? Wear DEET to repel mosquitos? That was our biggest challenge on our recent trip.
@@queenb9668 Bears will destroy your car if they see a cooler in it or smell food. In established campgrounds there will be bear lockers for your food and toiletries.
I'm in Florida. I camp in a small van some times. it has a small 12v fridge that can run 24x7 at 40F in my simple power setup. Mostly I refrigerate cause the van can get up to 100F inside during the middle of the day . But in our so-called winter, it can get down to 40F some nights. When I does , I have an electric blanket but don't have enough power to run the fridge and the blanket. I know veggies will be fine overnight at around 50F without a fridge, but how about cured ham , left over deep fried chicken with the skin? cheese? left over pizza?
Wow! I would have never thought of the powdered milk if it wasn't for this video! Even though it was a staple in my youth! Thank you for the wonderful 'no cooler' ideas, as I'm planning a camping trip as we speak and don't want to have to bother with ice!
I’ve even added the instant mashed potatoes to soup to add bulk to dish. This also helps if your a little low on water because your cooking the potatoes in the broth of the soup. So you get your carbs, veg, and protein in one pot! Ya
One of my favourite easy meals is a packet of Earthly Choice Riced Cauliflower and a packet of Khazana Yellow Lentil and Chickpea Curry. I mix them together along with a little extra turmeric and cumin and sometimes some canned chicken breast and spinach to wilt in the last minute of cooking. Just make sure to empty the water out of the cauliflower first, or cook it down, as the extra liquid will water it down.

An idea to pair with tuna is cook some of those noodle packs (like the brand Knorr) and mix in the tuna and about a half a can of drained peas. I make this easy dish and usually use the Alfredo flavor. Happy camping!! 🏕️😊
My son is 5. If you have any more meal ideas that you can share I would very much appreciate it...
Great job. I like how you mix organic with not so healthy. Proving that moderation is key. Nice variety and very useful. Thank you and camp on!
If you are a fan of Spam, that makes an excellent addition to that mac and cheese
Love this!! Definitely helps me out because I tend to overthink foods for camping 😅
This may sound silly, but when cooking pasta, do you just drain the noodles away from your campsite?
So glad you got some new meal ideas! I hope you enjoy them on your next camping trip! 😁
Camping without a cooler has vastly improved our families camp efficiency and experience.
Im going portaging for the first time. All meal ideas are really helpful
Absolutely LOVED this video! We have a large family and these ideas will make our meals much faster! ❤️
I'm so glad!! Thank you for watching!
It sits in the van in the hottest part of the day
Great job Amanda your so full of energy and Happiness
God's Blessings on all your adventures
This is a great idea generator for my first camping trip with my son..thankyou!
Have you tried canned beef? Costco and Sam's Club have some really tasty canned beef.
Yay perfect video! Started my camping pantry bin because of you so all of these are great things to put in 😊
Definitely! A lot of these items are staples in my camp pantry bin. I love having easy quick meals on hand. Thank you for watching 😁
We love ❤️ Kodiak pancakes. I make rice and beans and put them on tortillas for burritos. Suddenly Salad salads are a favorite meal option for us when we go camping.
What a great video! Thank you sharing these simple ideas.
Wow thank you for your video I will use your tips
You’re welcome 😊 So glad you liked the video!
Great video! I was just talking to my brother about planning a simple trip with no coolers. Funny enough totally forgot about PB sandwich and tuna!
Another idea with the tuna packets… Add a couple packets of mayonnaise and/or pickle relish if you have some leftover from a restaurant.
Great ideas thank you. I think my granddaughter will love the peanut butter, honey, banana sandwich.
Love making homemade jerky! It's definitely one of my favorite snacks 😁
Wow! I'm getting on that!
Thanks for the great video! Went car camping last week in 105 degree weather. We went through 125lbs of ice to keep perishables cold. Next time we are definitely limiting what we are bringing in a cooler! Jockeying coolers around a camp site to stay out of the sun was not fun!!
I've definitely been there. Keeping the cooler out of the sun is a full time job 😂 Glad you liked the video!
going camping tomorrow and that honey peanut butter sounds so good!
I usually watch mre and camping videos and you actually had some new and unique ideas. Completely different than the usual. Nice job.
Going camping on Saturday (hopefully), thanks!
Have an awesome trip!!
Thank you so much!! So handy to have all these ideas in one place. I hadn't heard of the tuna before. Some of them are so obvious but easy to overlook, so thank you for enumerating!!!
You're welcome! I'm glad this was helpful. 😁
I love these ideas because I don’t wanna sit there and have to go to the city to get ice only problem is I just found out why I’m sick as I have severe IBS so now to find Mills that go with that
Hi Amanda found you channel a couple weeks ago. Thank you for giving us ideas on easy no frig needed meal. They all sound healthy and most portable too. Look forward to watching more. Do you have any ideas for exercises on how to get yourself ready for hiking? Thanks
So glad you like the meal ideas! Exercises to get ready for hiking would be a great video idea. I would love to have a trainer or fitness professional on the channel to talk about that. Personally, I really enjoy lifting weights, HIIT workouts, and Crossfit. Welcome to the channel!
@@amanda.outside Thank you. I'll keep watching your informative videos. Best wishes on your channel.
Some great camping ideas , thanks!
if you mix the instant potato’s with ramen it’s so good or macaroni to make it less watery
banana in a tortilla, mash up the banana in/on the tortilla, and add a Tbl or 2 of Peanut Powder and some raisins... yummm... I keep a few MREs and some Mountain House meals in the car food box for when I just don't feel like cooking......
That’s does sound good!!
Thanks so much for your video and ideas.
Would love to hear your ideas on gluten-free camp meal.
When my friend and I go fly fishing/camping we do peanut butter and granola...it's similar to the peanut butter and trail mix, but w/ a little dark chocolate it melts a little in the pack and is sooooo good. Thanks!
Soup , packet or tinned cooked with the noodles 👍😍
Yeah I travel light when I go camping. I want to spend my time hiking, fishing, exploring. Tuna, ramen, cliff bars, tortillas and squeeze butter. Catch fish, eat crawdads to supplement and live good in the outdoors.
Excellent video! Great ideas! Basically how I like to eat at home!
Great stuff! I don't cook much when camping unless it's just in a freezer bag. I think that's actually how I found you a few months ago.
Thank you very helpful. Knorr pasta and rice sides are good too.
Great video! Just got back from car camping and utilized some of these great ideas!👍
Can you do a video on deterring bears or other predatory animal and mosquitos while camping? Do you hang your food to avoid the bears? Wear DEET to repel mosquitos? That was our biggest challenge on our recent trip.
Couldn't you just put your food in your car?
@@queenb9668 Bears will destroy your car if they see a cooler in it or smell food. In established campgrounds there will be bear lockers for your food and toiletries.
Love it!! Such great ideas!! Thank you for sharing!
Another great video. I love how you make it all look so easy. You ROCK
I love seeing a new video pop up from you Amanda! Thank you
You're so welcome!
Love the video, but I've been eating outdoors non refrigerated and cold foods since I was in the infantry 👌
Wow! I would have never thought of the powdered milk if it wasn't for this video! Even though it was a staple in my youth! Thank you for the wonderful 'no cooler' ideas, as I'm planning a camping trip as we speak and don't want to have to bother with ice!
I just started watching your channel! Thanks a ton! ❤️✌🏻
Welcome to the channel! Thank you for watching!
As always...great video. Thank you.
These are great!!! Thank you! Will definitely use!
You're so welcome! Glad you got some new ideas 😁
Great video thanks for a ton of new 💡 💡 idea's keep it coming from Florida
Glad you got some new ideas!! Thank you for watching 😁
Hi Amanda! Great vid, and thanks for sharing! The mashed potatoes and tuna idea sounds interesting. Will give it a try! 😉👍
