Vlog: THRASH REVIVAL - What is its true legacy?

  • The "thrash revival" movement has been on a mission to "bring thrash back" for - believe it or not - almost 20 years at this point, more than double the amount of time the original thrash scene lasted! I want to take a look at this movement, examine what it has to offer the metal scene of the mid-'00s, and what impact its has on the broader heavy music scene.
Keep in mind that these are all just my opinions, and my personal take on things. I don't claim any sort of objectivity.

I got into Metal at the high of the Thrash revival in 2007 with the "Get Thrashed" documentary. It was a great time and brought about many bands that I still love listing to. Havok, Warbringer, Vektor, Municipal Waste, Exmortus, Mantic Ritual, Evile, Bonded By Blood, Angelud Apatrida, Crisix. It revived many of the first generation Thrash bands to this day and I'm pretty sure, that the Big 4 tour would never have happened without it.

I think the Big 4 was probably an inevitability. Bands that classic are never out of style, and they were all at the age where they didn't hate each other as much as they used to, and were realizing that the window of opportunity for a project like that wasn't going to be open forever.
It probably wouldn't have done as well though.

Take the nostalgia thing out, retro thrash (mid 2000s to early 2010's ) is better than 80's thrash.
    Unbelievable retro thrash albums :
Dekapitator - Storm Before the Calm (best thrash album of all time)
    Violator - Chemical Assault 100/100
Suicidal Angels - Eternal Domination (RIFFS!)
Bonded by Blood - Feed the beast (modern production done right)
Mantic Ritual - Executioner (KEA of retro thrash)
Toxic Trace - Torment (the most brutal thrash album of all time)
Raped God 666 - Executioner ( savage AF)
Municipal Waste - Art of Partying ( 100/100, best crossover thrash album ever)
Deathchain - Deadmeat Disciples (perfect deathrash carnage from start to finnish)
And bunch of great releases by Deathhammer, Nekromantheon, Lich King, Vektor, Toxic Holocaust,Fueled by Fire, Bywar...
Also that was period when some OG's released their best work in a long time like Sodom (Code Red, their best imho), Destruction (The Antichrist, their best imho ) Kreator (Violent R.) Metallica (Death Magnetic) , Slayer (Christ Illusion), Tankard (Beauty and the beer)... even Ministry released thrash monster Rio Grande Blood.
Some retired bands came out and released better stuff than in 80's like Heathen (Evolution of chaos) , Exumer (every post reunion album), Agent Steel (Bruce Hall era > John Cyriis era), Exodus, Testament (they were never officially disbanded but they were inactive for a while ) ...
In my book, retro thrash beats old school.
P.S. that era brought internet blogs where many people discovered some forgotten bands like Demolition Hammer, Morbid Saint (both of 'em are reunited mainly because of new fans who discovered them through those bloggs. Let's include Dark Angel also)
    Cheers

Great video. It seemed to disappear in the 90s for a while, but since then there have been lots of great thrash bands.

Vektor, Sylosis,Exxperior ( their latest album) and Dissimulator are literally all the new Thrash bands I need...all the rest just sound like far lesser versions of what I already have. Including the more obscure old bands like Minotaur or Energetic Krusher. There is way too much great music out there to waste my time on retro music.

Using the artwork for "Forgotten Tales" was kind of a miss. Liked your rambling otherwise. 😉

Yeaaahhhhh... just wanted an artwork that wasn't from either album to emphasize the connection between the two BG periods 😉
