- Making pencils is a delicate process. Wood needs to be strong enough to not break under the writer's hand, but soft enough to sharpen. Once the pencil is shaped, it's painted vibrant yellow and sharpened to perfection.

I use this video along with Read's "I, Pencil" to teach high school economics. Students watch the video and read the essay, then work together to create as comprehensive a list as they can to demonstrate the resources (land, labor, capital) used. We can then use the pencil as a product in economic models to discuss supply and demand, scarcity, and other economic concepts.

Go to an office store and look in the pencil section! The pencils I use are natural pencils that aren’t painted at all! And they are cheaper than regular painted pencils and are better and last longer!

jony Chauhan - I never had your "drill a hole" idea but how the lead got there has always been one of life's mysteries to me. I've pondered it, discussed it, debated it. I had no clue that's how they did it.

When I was a kid my mum gave me some pencils from Germany. They were fantastic and she also gave me a small German pencil sharpener made of steel. It was the only way I could sharpen the pencils. Later on I found out just how expensive the whole set was. I learned a German word - Genauigkeit. The Japanese know that word so today I use mechanical pencils from Japan.
