Paragliding is one of the easiest ways for you to start flying. It’s the biggest wing out of these three. It allows you to take off from almost anywhere and then you can just slowly enjoy panoramic flight back down to the valley. Or use thermals and wind and fly far away. Theres is a lot of different paragliding niches - xc paragliding (cross country paragliding), acro paragliding, soaring, hike and fly and so on….
Completely opposite from paragliding is speed flying. And for that we’ll pick up the smallest wing. These are made for super fast usually close to the ground proximity flying. There are different sizes and models available giving you slightly different flying possibilities, but all are very reactive, sensitive on inputs and much faster than paragliding wings. For speed flying you also have to be more picky about take off sites. Well as you can see…Usually you need little more space and steepness. I have to mention you have to master paragliding and downsize slowly before you jump into speed flying!
If you want little of that paragliding but still a little more speed and dynamics? Well lucky you, there is mini wing for all that fun! Mini wings in sizes are smaller than paragliding wings but bigger than speed wings. So something in between. So you wont be able to fly as efficient as with paraglider but you can still enjoy local thermals and soaring sessions and you can open your speed/trim system and get some pretty close feelings to speed flying. Take off is very similar to paragliding wing.
So speedflying is the fastest and the most "racing" options of "parapente" flying while paragliding offers you quiet a few options, from slow xc paragliding to acro flying. And mini wings will give you whole new level of flying.
While you can take off with your paraglider on super tricky launches you will have to be more picky and careful with speedflying wings! If you go out with miniwing - in most cases you can take off and launch from all paragliding sites!

I think once one gets serious about flying (with the elements). It’s good to try all types of wings. Of course beware of your limites as a pilot. My next challenge is to get into BASE jumping. Calculating all risques are vital. But paragliding will always give me my longest air time and detoxify me from society’s stresses and complications. Good flight to all!

I'm 64 years old I bought the epsilon 9 that was the biggest one I'm so fat I'm flying heavy on the wing and I'm only going to learn to fly one-way around and I'm going to learn to fly it so I don't land hard if I can help it. All this speed flying especially proximity flying is very good way to get injured. I Saw an eagle doing proximity flying and on his lunch break he was sitting on top of telephone pole and he saw a mouse 75 feet away. I couldn't see the mouse so I decided that I didn't have any business doing proximity flying like that hawk did the could see the mouse
I’m a newbie paraglider pilot, old timer helicopter pilot . I’ve been paragliding for about 6 months now and have had some really nice soaring flights and all but It was videos I saw of proximity speed flying that attracted me to free flying. So while I will continue with the paragliding I definitely want to add speed flying to my hobbies. I’ve done plenty of ground handling with a mini-wing on windy days. Really want to transition!

I got my name on the list for PG2 this comming february 2021 and this video is very interesting to me. Thinking to buy my first wing, is a miniwing a good choice as a beginner? I'm in Western Australia and most of my flights will be soaring at sand dunes and costal flights... miniwings seems to be soooo cool😆 cheers

Is there a sort of safe and convenient way of flying such wings of aa alpine peak after hiking? I mean I have no Idea of how heavy the equipment is and maybe a ton of considerations I cant even imagine that may actually exist.
I have a mini wing with a speed bar. It has sheathed lines and uses dokdo 30 for fabric, very resistant construction that I use primarily at the dunes in fast winds, flying >110kg on 20m². I have flown it at mountain too, but that's not where I live so have to contend with heavy wind soaring.
Speed flying is frankly quite scary for me and since I'm new in the sport I don't really see myself doing it right now
I love paragliding and an considering getting into more into freestyle. So I'll probably have the following wing sizes: 30m² for XC and light wind soaring. 25m² for freestyle and medium-strong wind soaring. 20m² for speedier things. I'm a big pilot so you and see I'm probably not going below 20m² until I get a lot more experience, instead I would even consider a 27m² as another size to have, just need to get a good test on different wings to see if it is worth it

How useful is skydiving experience here. Or more precisely how different is the canopy? Can you bring over any knowledge and experience on flying canopies?
I'm a paraglider pilot (84kg), usually flying either an 19m Pi2 or a 26m Epsilon. I'd like to get into mini wings for hike and fly / climb and fly, in particular the Pi3 16. I was thinking about doing a speed flying course to get used to smaller wings/higher speeds, I wanna get experience so I'd be a safer pilot. Do you think this makes sense? Do the skills from speed flying translate to mini wings? I think in winter I want to try speed riding too, but my big focus right now is mini wings.
Thats great!! The most important thing is that you take things slow and step by step.. no rushing 🤙 if you have any courses aroud you then yeah you can go for it.. Or you can downsize slowly to find your spot. If youre flying 19 then 16 sounds like a smooth downsize point 🤙🤙 then you can just progress from there into speedflying wings if you feel comfy.. if you know people around you that do speedflying..connect with them as well ✨🤟

The mini wing is as small as my biggest foil kites!! ...lol!! I cant believe you get high off the ground on them! If my kite starts lofting me off the ground, its time to wrap it up and go home!

Would a mini wing be suitable for a beginner if you load it at the bottom of it's envelope? Also, what happens if you underload a paraglider?
Sure its possible! All depends on your weight... but in general dynamics of the wing go up with loading... if you underload it its not gonna fly that efficiently and you go really low under the range it can become dangerous...

hey, seems like a decent miniwing offers the best from both worlds. for me I'd would be great to learn gliding because I love hiking (1-2 times per week) and if a glider isn't the fastest and coolest way down then I dunno... is it common or reasonable or at least possible to start with a Miniwing after you did your basic lessons, if during that it shows that I'm not absolutly incapable?
Depends where you go, there are some schools that teach you single skin (super light miniwings - around 1kg often) as a first wing. They are super easy to control and super small and light for hiking. You won't be able to enjoy too much thermals but for gliding down from a hike they're pretty much perfect.

Well, - big, small - this is very relative. Depends on pilot wright. I'd suggest you explain in terms of specific load what are the ranges for each group. Otherwize, the same miniwing could be a paraglider for one pilot and a speedwing for another. Thanks.

Well, the major difference is not horizontal speed but sink-rate (vertical speed); top loaded comp wing (boom11 for example) is as fast as mini-wing with incomparably better glide performance. Mini-wing sinks as crazy it is their major "advantage" for ridge soaring with strong wind. Boom11 does not have difficulty to penetrate it just has difficulty to land while mini-wing has no problem to get as low as it wants, it just has a very bad glide performance close to witch broom or piece of rock , too expensive for chunk of granite... a way more profitable then to deal with mature and sophisticated tech though...

I love my hybrid paramotor paragliding wing can lift 350 pounds a little slow but still has the felling off flight

Hey hey, if you are speedflying and going up to a paraglider everything will be much slower and "easier" so I think that shouldnt be a problem at all. Ofcourse depends on wings and your skills.

The difference between them is that I flew paragliders for 25 years without serious injury, and after one year of flying a Little Cloud mini wing I ended up with quadriplegia.
