Dude, this was absolutely breathtaking and a real eye-opener for me. In the 90s my brother and I both got into skydiving, he more so than I. I did 175 jumps, then started a family and let it go, as I no longer had the time or passion for it. My brother never stopped - he was the real adrenaline junkie, much more than me. I haven't come across many videos on paragliding, but I always suspected it was more in line with my personality - this video pretty much confirmed that suspicion. Speedflying to paragliding seems kind of like proximity wingsuit flying to skydiving ... a whole different pursuit and definitely not my bag. Even skydiving never really captured the spirit of what I think I was always looking for. The idea of simply floating above the Earth, looking down at the scenery, with no 60-second time-limit to enjoy the whole experience, nor the incessant roar of a Cessna prop on the way up and 120 mph relative wind on the way down, is such an intoxicating idea, for the same reason that I've always preferred kayaks and x-country skis to outboards and Skidoos. I'm 62 with limited means - not sure if I could ever make it happen. But this video definitely has opened my eyes to what I think my flight dreams have always been trying to tell me. And the videography is absolutely stunning! I see it was posted 6 years ago, but for me it was a fresh inspiration. Many thanks.
Buddy. 62. You're a baby when it comes to PG pilots. Most of the guys I fly with are in their 60s. There are three reasons I reckon - 1. More likely to have disposable income to buy gear with and go on PG holidays to places where the wind is always on and the weather is beautiful (places like Bali and Hawaii) 2. Related to the first reason, more likely to have free time to go wait on a hill for a few hours with some mates. The conditions to fly aren't too restrictive but depending on where you live, and on reason 3 you might need a lot of time on your hands. 3. There are old pilots. And there are bold pilots. But there are no old, bold pilots. Only old, bald pilots 😂 A pilot who lasts to 62 flies for themselves. They are cautious and aren't peer pressured into uncomfortable conditions. They fly to live, not to escape. And so the pilots I tend to fly with are a bunch of old farts. But maaaan they're the best. They have such wisdom, so many stories and if you're respectful, they'll be respectful back. Unlike a lot of other Generations...
Sweet. I love to see others explore more of aviation. Never get caught up in labels with the hang gliders vs, paragliders or any other sub part of aviation. It's all fun. I started with RC, went to hang gliders, airplanes, tail draggers, aerobatics, sky diving, cross country speed airplanes, bush flying, powered parachutes, trikes, FPV and now I'm looking at gliders and para gliders while never completely letting go of any of the rest. Getting caught up in labels only slows you down.
I really appreciate your passion for flight, and this well made video. However, I am very concerned by your message that learning to paraglide off of youtube is a safe and reasonable thing to do. As a fellow pilot, I urge you to add some sort of disclaimer. Aviation can be made dangerous or safe, but in all it's forms it is very unforgiving. I'm not trying to insult your intelligence or ability; nobody could self teach and know where the all gaps in their knowledge and skill are. There are no two ways about it, skill and knowledge gaps get pilots killed. I don't want to be melodramatic, but it took a lot of early pilots dying to teach us how to fly properly. Now that we know better, it's pointless to add to that number. You mentioned risk management in the video, which I think is excellent. It's possibly the most important job of every pilot to consider this thoroughly. One of the best ways to mitigate risk is through proper training. Think of it like any other piece of safety equipment. Not cheap, but definitely worth the investment. Keep flying, keep up that passion, but please, be safe. Blue skies
You will only become a highly skilled pilot when you learn by and fly with professional instructors as well as competition toppilots. These pilots are lightyears better than you will probably ever be. They will teach you skills and tricks you otherwise will never master by learning on your own. Unless you are happy with this amateur level or when you are just trying to show off or try to impress a non flying observer. Then it makes no difference, they can not judge mediocre from top skill flying.
Being a pilot myself paragliding isn't something you can learn of TH-cam , there's tips and tricks you can learn on TH-cam but the basics you've really just gotta go to a school to learn such as FlySpain
I am a pioneer and refused to take any instruction from any one before my first flight to allow myself that experience. it was also way before the internet and youtube. nowadays if you are a follower go have some lessons. watch some videos. I watch videos to inspire me to do things no one has done, not to copy them. being real and exploring it like the first guy by trial and error. provides the greatest rewards. as you pile on rules and regulations because some other arsehole is shitting himself from fear you diminish the rewards for true free spirits.these two experiences are different and for different people. if safe is what you want stay inside. if you have fear of death try to treat it as your own fear and not necessarily shared by others. it is an illusion that you can die along with the illusion that you are a physical being. you are an eternal being and this physical world is a transient moment . having the fear of death or illusion that you are in fact you're body . If you want to be a "pilot" do the course get the stamps and the pics, in the que, like the rest of the sheep, that's how they do things. Whatever blows your hair back buddy, whatever blows your hair back.

The video was nicely edited but it's hugely irresponsible to go encouraging people to get into paragliding by buying second-hand gear off eBay and teaching themselves via TH-cam. It looks like you were really lucky to walk away from those crashes that you showed, they could easily have resulted in serious spinal injuries or broken limbs. For those of your viewers who might want to take up paragliding please seek out qualified instruction and go through the proper training. It's too dangerous a sport not to.
Graham Surrey I have to agree with you. Firstly, I've seen wings online for USD150. Buy that one, it'll kill you. Secondly it's illegal in most countries (and straight forward stupid) to learn and then fly without going through an experienced and registered school/instructor. I'm half way through my training, loving it.
Ryan Black it's not about finger wagging. When you've had a friend, who was an experienced speedflyer, die as the result of an error of judgement it's hard to be blasé about the risks involved. My point still stands. If you're going to try to get into the sport with a wing from eBay and instructions from TH-cam then you're opening yourself up to risks that you don't fully understand and aren't equipped to deal with. You might well 'get away with it' but if you do end up hitting the ground due to inexperience and overconfidence there's a better than even chance that you won't be walking it off as easily as this guy.

What I was pointing out in my original comment however is that nowhere in the video was there any narrative that encouraged anyone interested in taking up the sport to seek qualified instruction in order to keep themselves as safe as possible. He talks about getting a wing from the internet and "trying his luck" with his first flights. When he has several nasty crashes he's "considering the risk and reward" of the sport. None of these statements acknowledge that safety should be your priority when learning an activity that can severely punish rookie mistakes. Your point about appealing to the spirit of those who pioneered free flight is all well and good, but if you deliberately negate the accumulated knowledge that's been built up since then by failing to learn through an instructor who knows what they're doing then you're choosing to remain wilfully ignorant.

I have been flying r/c my whole life, and I also got into paragliding because of my love of flight. I had to give it up 9 years ago to focus on my family. My son is now 22, and wants to fly as well. Your video has really got me wanting to fly again. I live in Houston, and flew powered paragliders with TX wingnuts. I am moving sometime next year, and hope to locate my self by mountainous terrain so I don't have the restrictions of the 90lb motor on my back! Thanks again for this great video man!
In my honest opinion you should go back to an EN-A certified wing and MASTER the basics first! Learn the flight behavior with a docile wing then you can apply it on your tonic miniwing. Some situations can get quite overwhelming on this wing for a beginner. I see how ambitious you are about flying and how you talk about safety BUT you are not ready for an EN-C rated miniwing(which is far from docile)!!! See, ego is the biggest problem in extremsports, some have to learn it the hard way and I hope you recognize it before that. gmy33 Dune flying is easy. Laminar wind flow gives you a lot of room for safety. The problem starts when these “experienced” pilots come to the Alps, Dolomites or other mountainchains and think they know what they are doing. In 15 years of flying I witnessed too many (fatal) accidents. Ego is a huge problem in extreme sports.
ego kills .. and so it should .. .. i dont think you get my point of wing control in dune soaring ..with for example 15ms turbulent winds and easily dropping you the distance you dont have as savety ... in my eyes most of mauntainpilots hardly have any control ... shure 5 ms with big wing ... staying up .. but he .. those miniwings have to rock !!!!!

I used to skydive up until a couple of years ago but it requires a lot of time, money and waiting for decent weather. Paragliding seems a lot more accesible and something I'd like to maybe try sometime.
sry to tell but its horrible with all the noise. I carry up my kit that has a weight of 8-10 kg on what ever mountain I like and then fly the sky. To learn to read the terrain is such a big part of the joy. Once you've managed to fly 50km, 100km or even 200km you feel like an eagle. In the end I assume its a different thing. Glad you love flying as much as I do. Happy flying!

Great video. All your videos are very informative and this Documentary is in my opinion pro level production. I took to paragliding the same way. Used gear and self taught. I stopped mountain biking , surfing and all RC for about 3 years because all I wanted to do is fly. Ridge lift is all I get over here on the Monterey Peninsula of California. Still amazing flying along the coast sometimes for hours. Like you the risk versus reward has got me thinking. Now I'm back to surfing, biking, RC, working and normal stuff. I still have my wings and all my gear. I just can't bear to sell as I some day may fly again.
When I started skydiving I went down the wing-sizes from 230 to 170 and 150 in under 2 seasons and the difference in the speed at the landing was huge,.. be careful with downsizing your wings to quickly, just take your time. Great Video!

Nice video. Keep in mind that speedflying is just one among many routes to progress. The more common and safe way is going for cross country flights. To me flying 200 km / 10 hrs is the most beatiful and rewarding thing. However, others like to things like speedflying, acrobatics or competition. Well - everyone can chose for himself. Stay safe!

Scrapping on those hills is very dangerous and painful like hell. Not to mention anything worse that can happen.
Different wings for different things. Nice video man. Gotta love all the options out there for the kind of flying you want to do now days. Flying isn't for everyone but you sure wish everyone could feel the euphoria it gives you.
Hang gliders give you both speed and lift. They aren't nearly as convenient as paragliders or speedflyers, but are well worth the effort. Safer than both IMO. Fly safe, enjoy your grandkids.
Depends. If you get teachers who can teach you the basic skills and you don't teach your self and lack the basic skills then paramotor are safer but all in all if you get the right training both are safe
Another interesting film Daniel. I flew paragliders and paramotors 2008 to 2013 and had a 15m Little Cloud Spiruline which was a good compromise between the two disciplines. You live in a perfect place for free flight so keep it up. Most importantly stay safe and have fun. (p.s. I'd suggest speed riding if you ski).
You have one of the most recognizable voices on youtube. I knew it was rctestflight as soon as I heard your voice. I see you've already been reprimanded for trying to self teach. I'm taking my Power Paragliding lessons in FL in March. I bought an Air Conception Nitro 200 as it has one of the best reputations going. And they are so far behind in their builds it takes 12 weeks just to get the motor. But they are worth it for sure. Be careful and definitely get some lessons. I noticed the scabs on your knees. Funny the edits....your knees have scabs and then they don't. LOL.
I'm currently making my paraglider license in Germany. Here everything is regulated by law so just buying gear on ebay and trying it out sounds really risky to me :) IMHO even if you don't need a license for paragliding in your country, I strongly recommend to attend a course as there are some hidden risks which you don't want to learn "the hard way" as you probably won't survive it. Also knowing the rules makes flying also a lot safer for the other pilots around you. Be safe and always happy landings!
I hab meinen Schein in Österreich gemacht und wir haben für das lernen der Theorie eine Seite vom DHV genutzt und ich muss schon sagen dass ich froh bin den Schein in Österreich gemacht zu haben weil wir Sachen viel lockerer sehen (lockerer aber nicht so locker dass es gefährlich ist) nur als Beispiel ihr müsst umbedingt für den Luftsport hergestellte Helme tragen währen es bei uns keinen juckt wenn man mit nem Skihelm zb fliegt und irgendwie macht das auch sinn ich denkt der Skihelm schützt dich davor wenn du mit im Extremfall 100km/h auf eine Eisfläche knallst also wieso soll er dich nicht auch schützen wenn du beim Start mit meinetwegen 20km/h aufs maul fliegst. deine Meinung würde mich dazu wirklich interessieren
@@lacstex4673 Das mit den Helmen ist halt typisch deutsch überreguliert. Ich finde auch dass die Snowboardhelme genauso gut sind. Ich kenne auch viele die mit Snowboardhelmen fliegen. Ich hab mir halt damals nen Gleitschirmhelm gekauft den ich auch zum Skifahren nutze. Ich fliege auch lieber in Österreich weil da nicht alles so stark von Vereinen abhängt ... Die Vereinsmeierei bei uns ist teilweise schon echt nervig.

bro your brave anyone watching this please put safety of your life first ....I have the same character as this person I tend to teach myself n learn as I Go I taught my self to drive when I was 16 after hour in car park I was driving every where I taught my self many things and yes it can be done but remember the more dangerous the thing is your doing the more you should put safety first so my advice is always look for training from qualified recognised instructor n before you attempt something blindly my advice is look at some videos of when stuff goes wrong that will sober you up remember if you have accident from height you can easily damage your neck or spine and then you may never walk again if you survive
That was an awesome comparison! I have been PPG'ing for about 5 years and have never tried PG, although, I am going to one day soon. I just don't live in an area where there is much natural lift, so the fan just gets me in the air and from there I soar! As you said, there is nothing quite like it and who doesn't want to fly!

I would personally wear a Hemet, knee pads, elbow pads, gloves, and a leather jacket. Helps soften rough landings. Biker jackets are great. The metal zippers and thick leather are designed to protect bikers from road rash. Works good If you tumble on a rough landing with these.

I feel it would be responsible of you to mention at the beginning that learning paragliding without an instructor is VERY dangerous, particularly as you don't learn how the weather works, and many of your viewers won't understand that. (You can go up and backwards when you don't want to among other things!)

Ryan Black I enjoyed the video as well, for what it's worth. It's great to see that passion for the sport and the enthusiasm to spread the message via filmmaking.
I don't consider myself a 'know better' BTW. I'll freely admit that I still make mistakes when flying, including a one the other week that could've ended a lot worse.
What I was pointing out in my original comment however is that nowhere in the video was there any narrative that encouraged anyone interested in taking up the sport to seek qualified instruction in order to keep themselves as safe as possible.
He talks about getting a wing from the internet and "trying his luck" with his first flights. When he has several nasty crashes he's "considering the risk and reward" of the sport. None of these statements acknowledge that safety should be your priority when learning an activity that can severely punish rookie mistakes.
Your point about appealing to the spirit of those who pioneered free flight is all well and good, but if you deliberately negate the accumulated knowledge that's been built up since then by failing to learn through an instructor who knows what they're doing then you're choosing to remain wilfully ignorant.

I have been flying r/c my whole life, and I also got into paragliding because of my love of flight. I had to give it up 9 years ago to focus on my family. My son is now 22, and wants to fly as well. Your video has really got me wanting to fly again. I live in Houston, and flew powered paragliders with TX wingnuts. I am moving sometime next year, and hope to locate my self by mountainous terrain so I don't have the restrictions of the 90lb motor on my back! Thanks again for this great video man!

In my honest opinion you should go back to an EN-A certified wing and MASTER the basics first!
Learn the flight behavior with a docile wing then you can apply it on your tonic miniwing.
Some situations can get quite overwhelming on this wing for a beginner.
I see how ambitious you are about flying and how you talk about safety BUT you are not ready for an EN-C rated miniwing(which is far from docile)!!!
See, ego is the biggest problem in extremsports, some have to learn it the hard way and I hope you recognize it before that.
Other than that your video is really cool and I hope it inspires many others to experience this wonderful sensation!

gmy33 Dune flying is easy. Laminar wind flow gives you a lot of room for safety. The problem starts when these “experienced” pilots come to the Alps, Dolomites or other mountainchains and think they know what they are doing.
In 15 years of flying I witnessed too many (fatal) accidents. Ego is a huge problem in extreme sports.
ego kills .. and so it should .. .. i dont think you get my point of wing control in dune soaring ..with for example 15ms turbulent winds and easily dropping you the distance you dont have as savety ... in my eyes most of mauntainpilots hardly have any control ... shure 5 ms with big wing ... staying up .. but he .. those miniwings have to rock !!!!!

I used to skydive up until a couple of years ago but it requires a lot of time, money and waiting for decent weather. Paragliding seems a lot more accesible and something I'd like to maybe try sometime.
I took up paramotors this last year and it's been awesome! Don't have to wait for the right lift and you can fly where you want to.

I carry up my kit that has a weight of 8-10 kg on what ever mountain I like and then fly the sky.
To learn to read the terrain is such a big part of the joy.
Once you've managed to fly 50km, 100km or even 200km you feel like an eagle.
In the end I assume its a different thing.

Great video. All your videos are very informative and this Documentary is in my opinion pro level production. I took to paragliding the same way. Used gear and self taught. I stopped mountain biking , surfing and all RC for about 3 years because all I wanted to do is fly. Ridge lift is all I get over here on the Monterey Peninsula of California. Still amazing flying along the coast sometimes for hours. Like you the risk versus reward has got me thinking. Now I'm back to surfing, biking, RC, working and normal stuff. I still have my wings and all my gear. I just can't bear to sell as I some day may fly again.

When I started skydiving I went down the wing-sizes from 230 to 170 and 150 in under 2 seasons and the difference in the speed at the landing was huge,.. be careful with downsizing your wings to quickly, just take your time. Great Video!

Nice video. Keep in mind that speedflying is just one among many routes to progress. The more common and safe way is going for cross country flights. To me flying 200 km / 10 hrs is the most beatiful and rewarding thing. However, others like to things like speedflying, acrobatics or competition. Well - everyone can chose for himself. Stay safe!

Man, from someone who broke a leg with paragliding, learn the basics of flying with instructor, not from videos on internet, get as much protection as you can, and please, DO NOT fly with short pants and sneakers. Scrapping on those hills is very dangerous and painful like hell. Not to mention anything worse that can happen.
Different wings for different things. Nice video man. Gotta love all the options out there for the kind of flying you want to do now days. Flying isn't for everyone but you sure wish everyone could feel the euphoria it gives you.
Hang gliders give you both speed and lift. They aren't nearly as convenient as paragliders or speedflyers, but are well worth the effort. Safer than both IMO. Fly safe, enjoy your grandkids.

Depends. If you get teachers who can teach you the basic skills and you don't teach your self and lack the basic skills then paramotor are safer but all in all if you get the right training both are safe

Another interesting film Daniel. I flew paragliders and paramotors 2008 to 2013 and had a 15m Little Cloud Spiruline which was a good compromise between the two disciplines. You live in a perfect place for free flight so keep it up. Most importantly stay safe and have fun. (p.s. I'd suggest speed riding if you ski).
You have one of the most recognizable voices on youtube. I knew it was rctestflight as soon as I heard your voice. I see you've already been reprimanded for trying to self teach. I'm taking my Power Paragliding lessons in FL in March. I bought an Air Conception Nitro 200 as it has one of the best reputations going. And they are so far behind in their builds it takes 12 weeks just to get the motor. But they are worth it for sure. Be careful and definitely get some lessons. I noticed the scabs on your knees. Funny the edits....your knees have scabs and then they don't. LOL.
I'm currently making my paraglider license in Germany. Here everything is regulated by law so just buying gear on ebay and trying it out sounds really risky to me :) IMHO even if you don't need a license for paragliding in your country, I strongly recommend to attend a course as there are some hidden risks which you don't want to learn "the hard way" as you probably won't survive it. Also knowing the rules makes flying also a lot safer for the other pilots around you. Be safe and always happy landings!
I hab meinen Schein in Österreich gemacht und wir haben für das lernen der Theorie eine Seite vom DHV genutzt und ich muss schon sagen dass ich froh bin den Schein in Österreich gemacht zu haben weil wir Sachen viel lockerer sehen (lockerer aber nicht so locker dass es gefährlich ist) nur als Beispiel ihr müsst umbedingt für den Luftsport hergestellte Helme tragen währen es bei uns keinen juckt wenn man mit nem Skihelm zb fliegt und irgendwie macht das auch sinn ich denkt der Skihelm schützt dich davor wenn du mit im Extremfall 100km/h auf eine Eisfläche knallst also wieso soll er dich nicht auch schützen wenn du beim Start mit meinetwegen 20km/h aufs maul fliegst. deine Meinung würde mich dazu wirklich interessieren
@@lacstex4673 Das mit den Helmen ist halt typisch deutsch überreguliert. Ich finde auch dass die Snowboardhelme genauso gut sind. Ich kenne auch viele die mit Snowboardhelmen fliegen. Ich hab mir halt damals nen Gleitschirmhelm gekauft den ich auch zum Skifahren nutze. Ich fliege auch lieber in Österreich weil da nicht alles so stark von Vereinen abhängt ... Die Vereinsmeierei bei uns ist teilweise schon echt nervig.

bro your brave anyone watching this please put safety of your life first ....I have the same character as this person I tend to teach myself n learn as I Go I taught my self to drive when I was 16 after hour in car park I was driving every where I taught my self many things and yes it can be done but remember the more dangerous the thing is your doing the more you should put safety first so my advice is always look for training from qualified recognised instructor n before you attempt something blindly my advice is look at some videos of when stuff goes wrong that will sober you up remember if you have accident from height you can easily damage your neck or spine and then you may never walk again if you survive

That was an awesome comparison! I have been PPG'ing for about 5 years and have never tried PG, although, I am going to one day soon. I just don't live in an area where there is much natural lift, so the fan just gets me in the air and from there I soar! As you said, there is nothing quite like it and who doesn't want to fly!

I would personally wear a Hemet, knee pads, elbow pads, gloves, and a leather jacket. Helps soften rough landings. Biker jackets are great. The metal zippers and thick leather are designed to protect bikers from road rash. Works good If you tumble on a rough landing with these.

I feel it would be responsible of you to mention at the beginning that learning paragliding without an instructor is VERY dangerous, particularly as you don't learn how the weather works, and many of your viewers won't understand that. (You can go up and backwards when you don't want to among other things!)
