Hi shelby! I’m an Iranian potter, in Iranian style pottery, all the glazes and stains are handmade and all of manufactured glazes you use are non existent in my country:)) but we use raw glazes like cobalt you used here a lot. For painting and for avoiding these problem you had here, we use Tragacanth. It’s a plant base sap, for making hair gell. You can also use hair gell as well. The instruction is, use 10 grams of Tragacanth in 1 litter of water. Put it aside for 48hrs and then strain it. It gives you a gell-stinky like liquid. Add it to your cobalt as much you think its needed and you’re good to go🥰 btw love your content 😍
I'm a painter. I experiment all the time. i keep most of those to myself. I can't imagine doing all that in front of thousands of people. You are brave and creative and funny and smart. Well done, chica. Maybe try a plaid pattern with the cobalt. That blue is amazing. The black was fantastic. The pastels were gorgeous. Looking forward to that project.
When my sister got into cake decorating. She would come to a family event with a beautiful cake and then tell us all the ways it was wrong. I kept telling her, "you're the only one that knows what it was supposed to look like. The rest of us see a beautiful cake." So, exactly what you were talking about. This is a lesson I repeat to myself when whatever I'm making isn't turning out quite as I wanted it to.
I look forward to this series all week. It always makes me smile to see all the different things that come from such similar-appearing moulds. Thank you for sharing them. 💙
Yes, we are our own worst critics. I expect perfection from my work, my customers enjoy the "imperfections" and see the beauty of handmade pottery. The black lines over the pastels is giving me the oooohs and aaaaahs. Love all of them!
The brown one is gorgeous! It's SO my aesthetic. Very reminiscent of the 1970's pottery my mom used to have that got lost in our move in the early 90's...
I finally found a perfect super fine line brush! It is the brush from my super thin line eyeliner! It is tough as boots and makes the most precise line I have ever achieved. Best part: I found it at the Dollar Store! Just sharing the luckyness. Those little jugs are lovely.
They are a wonderful shape! It's always dissapointing when something doesn't turn out the way we envision it but so exciting to try something new 😊 something that has stuck with me was when I offered my friend a "seconds" photography print because the colours hadn't turned out exactly how I wanted and I was never going to sell it. She asked what was wrong with it and once I explained she just looked at me and said, "yes, but I don't know what you had in mind so to me it's perfect". It was a nice reminder to me that although our creative process didn't go as planned it's still beautiful!
I see this a win all around, the simple shape and your creativity. Having one design repeated in several styles is my favorite part of your series. The pastels are my favorite ones as the softness is so soothing, will gladly wait for it’s intended use. I am grateful for sharing your process. Cheers from the Midwest USA.
I love how you are always trying something new and even if trusting the process didn’t result in the way you wanted it to, you learned something and made beautiful art !
Love Love Love the one with the black line work over the dabby pastel colors! Can't wait to see the redemption video on this piece! And with it being such a minimalist shape, it lends itself to ANY design. Besides, it's the artist's vision that makes it special in the long run.
I appreciate you sharing your processes even when they don't quite go to plan! There is often such a focus on only showing the perfect stuff on socials, whereas the reality is that the road to great art is paved with lots of works that didn't go to plan. I look forwards to seeing what else you do with this mould later 😊
The shape of this piece is so lovely and looks like you could paint it to fit any and every theme. It’s simple yet elegant! Next week is salt and pepper shakers 🧂
I love seeing the ones that don't turn out so great. It's nice to see the different processes and be reminded that even talent needs experience and practice.
You are so welcome! We all need little reminders! I sometimes think we get caught up in our own insights that we forget that beauty is so different in different eyes!
I love when you go out of your comfort zone with these designs! I also like your videos more when you talk through the process because I like hearing your intentions and thoughts on each piece, but even if you don’t talk during them I’ll still watch your lovely videos!
Yay!! Thank you so so much for watching and also engaging and doing all the things! It helps my content so very much! Not only to reach other subscribers but new watchers too 💕
As soon as the notification came up that you had posted this week, I let out a little squeal! LMBO I was late to come to your channel, so was spoiled to be able to go through your catalog. Now that I'm up to date, it is hard to be patient! Anyway, love love love this little pitcher! The line work with the watercolor look is amazing! And the cobalt - girl! Even with the flashing, it is beautiful! The other with black lines - no words. You are a great artist and I love your eye for detail and style. Can't wait for the next!!!
My son's favorite was the one with the pastel glazes. We were all sad to see that the cobalt flashed on it as well. We look forward to seeing what you do with the pastel gazes in the future. He also liked the light blue and we look forward to watching this series every chance we get.
Oh the little creamer pitcher is adorable. I like them all the blue ones being my favorite. I like the style you were going for with them and the fact they arent so perfect.
so true, nobody but you knows your inner vision as an artist.....and then its up to the creator to see the beauty, the fun etc in it, too and take it as inspiration and find satisfaction from any result (...there's also redemption series possible haha)
Aw that made me tear up when you said just because it doesn't look like what you had in your head doesn't mean it's not worthy. Thank you for that! I always see it better in my head! I will remember what you said on my next project! 😊💜
Oh wow! The shape is so... satisfying??? I'm not sure how else to describe it, the way the spout just swoops into the handle looks so good. The flower pattern is lovely! I'm excited to see how you use it. Ah yeah, sometimes things don't turn out how you pictured them or something happens and you go "why did I think that would work?" All you can do is keep moving forward. I love that you decided to just play around with the rest and use this as a chance to experiment. They're all pretty! I think the pastel is my favorite but I also really like the black against pastel. The brown is pretty too but I feel like the brown needs to be a bit darker.
Oh wow I really love the blue and white! It would look stunning with that gold stuff you have, eg lining the lip of the jug I’d love to see just the plain white jug with that blue splattered on! ❤❤
So glad you took your own advice and shared your work. The one with the black line work is amazing!!!!! I really really love that piece a lot. Just goes to show you never know until you try.
Beautiful Shelby. Like you said no one knows but you so don't be too hard on yourself. I found the ones we least like are usually the ones that sell first!,, I think sometimes we forget experimenting is part of the process. The jug is such a great size with many uses, it could have been a one off model which wouldn't have had a name or number. What matters is the end result, and that results as always are beautiful! Thanks again shelby x
I love that you could very easily paint these in your style and sell them BUT you use them to further your techniques and skills. I know you will find your groove with them in the future good luck and god bless and you stepped out of your comfort zone.
WOW all of these are incredible and the pattern is right up my alley. I love both the blue ones and the black with watercolour background is INCREDIBLE. And the jug itself is so cute too.
I do other crafts, and I also have severe ME so I'm not able to create even a fraction of what I want to make. But these videos are so inspiring to me! I can't thank you enough for that!
The mold is lovely and I like the finished project. Each of them have a different quality to them which will attract different people. I really liked the black work and the pastel blue one. Looking forward to seeing what you do next!
I love strong black love work in any art, I might actually try to buy that one when they all go on sale next. It's fantastic, I hope you do more pieces like it
You opened this mold and I instantly thought it looked like wood! That would be a cute idea with the little mushrooms and maybe a hand made lady bug or butterfly on it! Would be cute as a set with the frogs or even done with the bubble glaze then the line work on top! Maybe paint a cow on it and it to the cow milk things/dispensers! Or paint a barn on it for that idea...however you want this little pitcher has possibilities 😃
Hey Shelby! I 💖the little pitcher. The black is the best. Here is one idea: free hand the Delft pattern in your own style. Another: after seeing the half-ball shapes in the pitcher mold, I kinda wanted you to adhere little polka dots onto the pitcher. Golly, I’d 💕 to see little fishes painted all around. An entire school! I ❤️❤️❤️watching your videos. You are the best pottery chick on TH-cam. 🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟
I look forward to these so much. Those pastels are just lovely. I can see doing them and then waxing and carving for a black outline which sounds like a lot of work. And the cobalt is lovely as well. Experiments are great. You are learning.
Love your work very inspirational and uplifting I am getting ready to have major back surgery and your videos are a great distraction from my pain thank you keep up the great work Mark
I love the mold and good going on experimenting with different glazes and styles. My favorites are the black outline and the light blue. Thanks for your video
This is a wonderful pice for some experimentation! I really liked the watercolour with the black and the pastel glaze💜. I think a full watercolour base or a bubble base with a line work over would be gorgeous
I love these little jugs so much. The surprised how it turned out design might be my favourite. I would love to see them with maybe a Clarice Cliff inspired design on them too.
You application on the cobalt reminds me a lot of a pottery store from my home town - it was called Hadley Pottery. They did folk art designs. They sadly just closed this past May. I love to see people keeping the art of pottery alive! You should look up Hadley, though. They have some very sweet (and very kitschy) designs.
It’s a shame the cobalt is so tricky to work with, the finished piece looked really promising. But you’ve made some beautiful items, the pastel watercolours with the black florals feels really nostalgic for some reason, I love it! Can’t wait to see what you do next with this mould, it’s such a clean design that it’s really versatile and timeless.
I couldn’t figure it out! I should have also looked up what medium I could use and I also don’t think it works on my type of clay because it’s usually porcelain 😅 thank you for your love!
Hearing you talk about how long it took to transfer the designs made me think about an article I read somewhere where they used inkjet prints. I can’t remember if they just placed them face down onto the still damp clay or if they used a cloth to dampen the paper. I’ve not tried it yet but I’m planning to when I get back to pottery class. I really love the little jugs, I think the third one was my favourite - with the black lines 💖
I have looked into printing and different ways of transferring but haven’t done too much research! This is just what I had on hand this week as a disclaimer for the video. I would love to look into creating custom underglaze transfers, playing with more screen prints and what you stated above! I think you need a special kind of printer to be able to do it but I am fascinated to learn more!
@@ShelbySherritt I think I might have some clay in my fridge, if it hasn’t dried out too much, I might roll some out and see what happens. I’ll let you know if it works.
Absolutely so pretty. Love seeing the learning process as well. 💚 This would look amazing painted to match your mushroom butter dishes, like your mugs with the mushrooms added.
By this video I know now why Delft Porcelainis so expensive: the cobalt blue as well as all that handpainting. I still find your versions so pretty Shelby. You never know how things work put until you have tried them.
Your videos are always so sweet to watch. If you have access to Mayco products they have a good transfer sheet you may find you like. Also their stroke and coat line is the same concept as the new glazes you try. I put clear over the stroke and coat it works great.
The mould itself is super cute and an amazing blank canvas for experimentation. It's a shame the cobalt didn't work out because the color is lovely. The pastels with black is my favorite of the group. I'm looking forward to seeing your regular style on this dainty little milk jug.
The cobalt reminds me of the transfer printed flow blue sort of style that was common in the late 19th century. It started as mistake in the production of transfer printed patterns in the same cobalt blue, like the Blue Willow pattern, but actually ended up being quite popular.
I'm sure you've already googled it, but Delftware is made by starting with a white tin glaze over the entire piece, the blue (which often is cobalt oxide!) is then painted onto the glazed surface, and then locked in with another layer of clear glaze. I'm not sure if something about painting onto an already glazed piece makes the cobalt easier to work with or not, but that's how it's done!
Ahhhh Thank you!! I somehow remember reading something about this a long time ago and didn’t realise it was for delftware! There you go!! I should have looked it up! I think that would have helped as it was just so grainy! I couldnt capture it on camera because the grains were too small to pick up on the camera! But it was either running all over the piece like a water droplet or like sandy gristle. Definitely need to research some more. I also think the clay body I am working with is not the most suitable to it as well!
@@ShelbySherritt I think, at the very least, having it already glazed would make it a lot easier to wipe off any smudges, but I really don't know haha. I did read that it's typically done with a thick cobalt oxide paint, maybe there's a special paint made just for delftware? Not sure!
@@ShelbySherritt hi, I’d be interested in watching further exploration with cobalt, it seems like it has a lot of potential. Another comment said to try something called tragacanth to fix the cobalt in a gel suspension. I don’t know what tragacanth is but if it’s just some sort of natural hair gel type product like they said it was, it would probably be possible to do the same thing with flaxseed or chia soaked in water overnight put through a fine colander and have the cobalt stick better with the plant gel than just with water? Flaxseed and chia are easy to find at the natural foods section of the grocery store.
I REALLY adore the water color with the dark linework over top - the Black really pops, and the brown was so much softer than I expected! But I also wonder what a cobalt piece that was allowed to smudge and be messy would look like - sometimes those imperfections can really make a piece even more charming.

Hi from New York :)
Cobalt, pb 28 is carcinogenic pigment.
Always wear mask..says the painter with emphysema when working with cobalt.

Listen you learned SO MUCH this week!!!
Love the cobalt pitcher.
I absolutely loved number 3! ❤
I REALLY adore the water color with the dark linework over top - the Black really pops, and the brown was so much softer than I expected! But I also wonder what a cobalt piece that was allowed to smudge and be messy would look like - sometimes those imperfections can really make a piece even more charming.
Oh. That messed with my brain! I really thought these were mush mush larger until you held them all up together! Hahaha these are super cute!
Well... They are all sweet, but yeah, the pastel with the black/brown details is the best! Good fun pieces all around. :-)
I still really like the cobalt wash, I know it's disappointing when a project doesn't go as it was intended but it's still quite lovely
Loves these ❤
The black one really has some personality. It’s an interesting mix of styles.
its still pretty even if it did come pout the way you envisioned. its fun to try something new and you can find ways to improve the design
