  • This is a heavily edited version of the original live ITV broadcast of the Canberra returning to Southampton on July 11, 1982 after a three month voyage in the South Atlantic. Canberra was a key element of the British Task Force sent to liberate the Falkland Islands from Argentine invasion. The edited version focuses on 3 Commando Brigade and 59 Independent Commando Squadron Royal Engineers. My apologies for many other interviews that have been cut from this version to reduce the duration to below 15 minutes.

    Thanks for putting this up Rod. I was there with my father welcoming my brother home. He will tell you he is not a hero but for me he was. Not because he was fighting a war to protect Maggie's re-election but purely because he survived and came home. He was and still is sad because of those that never got to go home to their families. Both British & Argentinian.

      @Justin Time , you are quite right but if his brother fought there he's allowed to criticise any politician he likes.
      Roderick Macdonald often points out in his lectures that the war led to the collapse of the Argentinian dictatorship which had killed 30,000 of its own citizens. For which thy received no thanks (from the Argentinians).

      @Justin Time
      and what respect there was in 1833 when the UK invaded the Falklands and evicted 200 Argentines, then implanting British settlers ?

    • @claudiolamoso952

      @Justin Time Investigate attempts to force British occupation of Spanish possessions in the southern Atlantic. Invasions of the Rio de la Plata in 1806 and 1807, Malvinas 1833, Confederacion Argentina 1838-1846. Remember the British Falklands retreat in 1774.

    • @claudiolamoso952
      @claudiolamoso952 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Justin Time On June 10, 1770, the then Governor of Buenos Aires, Francisco de Paula Bucarelli, ordered the eviction of the British occupants of the Falkland Islands, which at that time were considered as crucial territory for the control of the inter-oceanic passage between the Atlantic and Pacific and the southernmost areas of the planet.
      The importance of the Falklands had already been highlighted by George Anson, the first lord of the British Admiralty when he pointed out that "This island must handle the ports and commerce of Chile, Peru, Panama, Acapulco and, in a word, all the Spanish territory in that sea. It will make all our expeditions to these parts more lucrative for us and more fatal for Spain."

    A proud moment for the British following the rescue of the Falklands. It did much to restore Britain's reputation in the world, and rescued Mrs. Thatcher's administration to go on and restore the British economy. A time of which to be proud.

    The SS Canberra had a slogan on its side when she returned stating ' Canberra cruises, where the QE2 refuses'. To think that 4 years later in Gibraltar l was a member of the Regimental band, bugles, pipes & drums the 2nd bn the Royal Irish Rangers who played her off on her final voyage before retirement. The great white whale was a magnificent vessel. Belfast, her home was proud of her then. We still are. For the record. The great white whale went into retirement to the sounds of 'Sailing'. That was a memorable day. Faugh-a-Ballagh

      Roderick Macdonald Hi Roderick, I have just watched your video hosted on another channel th-cam.com/video/vh5Z6MgxTsk/w-d-xo.html - I added a comment thinking it was directed to your channel (in error) so I will post here -
      Roderick
      Thank you for posting this. I enjoyed it and could have handled another hour!
      Absolutely loved the Lancelot episode and expect you have dined out on that one a few times.
      I was 'involved' serving as an engineer on a carrier (the one that the Argentinians claimed to have sunk), so while busy most of the time - had some time to think. As mere engineers we could just not understand the logic of the South Georgia and Goose Green Ops at the time - the only upside I suppose was neutralising Sante Fe (Sub) - but that was mere happen stance. They may have also created fear, uncertainty and doubt for Menendez.
      Just one very minor point so you can amend your speaking notes - at 29:30 Antelope 21 Frigate (not 42).
      I think I have caught up with all your output to You Tube - anymore?😀

    • @RoderickMacdonald
      @RoderickMacdonald  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thank you so much for your helpful comments Norman. You are so right about dear Antelope our escort F21 Frigate. I met up recently with a retired Argentine Brigadier General who was a commando on the Falklands/Malvinas. He confirmed the neither South Georgia or Goose Green made any difference to them. As long as they controlled Stanley they controlled negotiations for the Islands. He said they were worried by two events. Firstly when we landed and secondly when they realized we had built an airfield and had harriers ashore. Congratulations on your service as an engineer on board ship. There are no "mere" engineers, just essential and brave ones. Thank you. If you want to watch more you can go to corecorporateconsulting.com/government-services/ which covers most of what has been published on different events. Thank you again Norman.

It was believed that Jerry died from mortar fire, however new evidence indicates that he was killed by a sniper. Two very different causes of death and the body I would have thought gave the cause.

    Argentina facts= third world, poverty stricken and forever a banana republic dictatorship. Britain facts= Thriving democracy and economy, well organized and the falklanders want to be British forever. And don't accuse the falklanders of not being indigenous or the British generally of being imperialist since Argentines themselves are not indigenous to Argentina since they're all of European origin (only the native indians are indiginous to Argentina) and the Argentine nation itself exists only as a result of Spanish imperialism.

      The ex-servicemens society SSAFA is now claiming that it is probable that more Falklands veterans have committed suicide since the end of the conflict than were killed during it. This claim cannot be verified, nor can the degree to which their service in the Falklands contributed to the suicides... but still, it gives you pause for thought... or at least, it certainly should.
