Ships At Work: Transport In Australia.

Made by The Commonwealth Film Unit 1967. Directed by Christopher Cordeaux. A young boy is invited aboard a tug boat and is shown around the harbour by the Captain of the tug, who explains what the various ships are doing in Sydney harbour, where they're going, what they're carrying and the importance of marine transport in Australia.

The Captain comes across as a hard old man but really is a softy at heart. The 1960's and 70's were great times growing up in Australia. Less pressure and more carefree in those days. No container ships back then.

Actually the Orsova was scrapped in the mid 70's.
The Fair Star was previously known as the Oxfordshire, it was scrapped in the 90's.

I believe that the collier 8 minutes into the film is the Branxton (ex. Kaimiro built by Cammell, Laird at Birkenhead, UK in 1929

@jorologo ORSOVA was scrapped in 1975.
TSS FAIRSTAR was converted from the troopship OXFORDSHIRE to enter immigrant and cruise service under the name "FAIRSTAR" in 1964, and was scrapped in 1997.

I date the film as early 60s... How I wish that I could go back in time and live in those days...
I first done the ozzie/ Kiwi coast in late 77/ 78 and it looked something like that but the steamers had gone..
But I also saw the last of the British General cargo ships..
Sadly in a few years it had all gone..

At 4:25 you can see the Opera House nearing completion. It was opened in 73; so this film would date to the late 60s or even the early 70s.

@jorologo The Orsova was built for Orient Lines in 1954 and transferred to P.& O Lines when the compnaies merged in the mid 60's. She was never named Fair Star, this was a name used by Sitmar Lines ,a totally different company

the Opera House wasnt finished til 72, so the date is wrong.

true, but you must remember that most films of that era had terrible writing. And the people they are filming in these sort of government films were not really professional actors but most of the time were just normal people who were professionals at the job the government film unit was trying to capture on film. They were also, largely, supposed to be educational in nature so their lines were deliberately kept rather simple.
