When she died - after he went around telling everyone she'd gone mad because he didn't want them to know she'd divorced him and basically put her under house arrest - he then acted as he had with his first empress; held her up as almost a saint and behaved like he'd lost the LohL.....but in reality, just as he had with his first empress, he treated her badly when alive then acted like he'd lost a saint when she died. I didn't like him and certainly didn't think their story was that romantic. However, this dramatization is the best and the one I thought was the most 'factual' (as much as historical dramas can be).

In Real history the emperor only loved his first empress, they married when both were 16 and he When she died, he never approached the consorts, he was very affected and wrote poems to her every day for the rest of his life. Ruyi's serie is very fake based on history. Yanxi palace's more truth about the first empress because she was a very good woman and in this series yhey put her like a witch when she was humble, good and beautiful. Since Ruyi’s clan usually cuts off their hair for mourning purposes, as stated later in other episodes, she not only cut off her hair to end things with him, but she mourns for the loss of the man and emperor she thought she knew, considering how they talked about how both the people who they were in the past are gone now. Poor Ruyi.

This scene was so sad, the fact she cut her hair to end their bond as husband and wife. But when she row out in the boat and see the birds flying away is a sign that she is finally free from the sadness and pain. What a sad part of the movie. I’m still in tears still watching this scene.

But look at how tame she handled all that!?! She is the classic version of a perfect female matriarch of that time. Firm but fair, knows how and when to speak in certain situations. Keeps her cool and learns from her mistakes. Notice the smirks she gives her adversaries once they confront her. She is cool and collected. Makes hard decisions no matter who it is against. She knows when to be cruel and when to be kind.
I agree, such a great comment, just what I was thinking while watching. She is hardly ever cruel in the series save for a few moments of extreme grief or suffering at the hands of unthink cruelty.

To add insult to injury Ruyi is the only one in the whole series that I have seen him slap not once but twice. I mean he did hit Consort Ling but that was only after He found out all the despicable treacherous things that she did and even that was like just a push.

@@miyuryuu7260 he kept her in the "cold palace" until all the wrongdoings were sorted out (everyone that schemed against her was figured out and punished), but when he went back to reconcile, she passed away. Afterwards, he never took another consort or empress, pretty sure he sent the others away as well, and went into the afterlife to her (keeping the plant she had and the lock of hair).
The fear was priceless and well deserved! He has a whole harem to play brothel with safely. He doesn't need to ruin his reputation, the people could hate them all if he we're to do that.
This scene makes me cry. I can feel her frustration. Also, I just put myself in her shoes. Who can share a husband being in love? But still, she did to help him and he distrusted her, made her suffer in many ways. She waited too long to do that.

She looks like she'd be a better ruler for their kingdom... I've seen this scene before but it didn't show what the emperor was doing, surrounded by courtesans.. she must've felt the disappointment deep in her heart.
Those ladies weren’t even part of the imperial harem. They were commoners, “entertainers” brought by a scheming concubine to tempt the emperor. Such behavior is against the rules, and Ruyi was trying to convince the emperor of this.
To be fair, the show is historical fiction. He was one of the longest running emperors in history. She also was his second Empress. It's funny how in other Ming Dynasty dramas, her character is a villain.
@@rimun5235 She probably wasn't truly this virtuous in real life, but Qianlong's rule was plagued with corruption because he favored sycophants over those who would speak harsh truths for the benefit of the empire. His rule was marked with being the most prosperous in the beginning, but the fall of the dynasty started with his reign because that was when conditions started to deteriorate, and the seeds of it became so deeply rooted that his descendants were unable to salvage the empire's former glory. Ulanara was also a bit of a mystery because a lot of what happened, particularly surrounding the cutting of her hair, was covered up, suggesting that whatever transpired was potentially very embarrassing for the emperor. I wouldn't be surprised if historically he had been the true villain all along, just like in the drama. He probably didn't flirt with prostitutes, exactly, but he had to have done something pretty atrocious, because if the Empress were the one in the wrong, he could have just fired her with full justifications, rather than what he actually did, which was try to pretend she didn't exist and kind of ignoring her until she died, then erasing all records of her that he could get away with. He didn't even falsify things to say that she was a horrible Empress etc etc, he just whited everything out and pretended there was nothing to explain, leaving her character up to interpretation.

She wanted Ruyi's power and position, and blamed her along the entire way for her personal setbacks which were not even Ruyi's doing, causing her to always target and scheme against her more.
Historically, I think there were records stating that Step-Empress Ula-Nara was disposed because she cut her hair in front of Qianlong, but there never was an official recounting of why she did that. I find the drama's interpretation of this historical tidbit very interesting.
The way I interpreted it from the historical record was that she did it in sort-of public - when he and the harem were all at a meal. Though as you said, the reason was never given. While I love LOVE Zhou Xu's performance in this series, it's about the only thing I love about it - even in this striking scene, they had to have Concubine Ling being exposition girl, with her "but us Manchu people don't cut our hair unless we're mourning!", like seriously? Who are you talking to, girl? The two people in the room with you know this. In the Story of Yanxi Palace, the same scene was handled differently - while I'm not a fan of the characterisation of UlaNara there, the scene with the hair cutting was kind of better - I didn't know anything about the hair-cutting taboo of Manchurians, but I understood how it was a big deal, with the way everyone around her recoiled and looked horrified when she did it. I certainly didn't need someone piping up with an explanation!
@@gwenivercall I don't think the line was merely exposition. they made Ling say the line about Manchu people only cutting their hair in mourning to show her scheming nature. cus Ling was trying to portray Ruyi cutting her hair as cursing the emperor to death. she says in the next line "but you're still alive!"

At some point the victim becomes the abuser. In the early stages of their royal relationship, his mother is still basically ruling the empire. When he learns how to ‘hardens his wings’, that was when he was making his own choices, stepping from underneath his mother’s and father’s shadow. It worked, for a time. After that point, all choices and responsibilities were his… I want to know this story from his perspective, though. We’ve seen Empress Ruyi’s, seen Wei Yanwan’s- what does Hongli think happened?
The empress is so brave and smart enough to solve things quite perfect. A husband who physically hurts you shall not be forgiven. There should be at least some respect while dealing with each other, no harming. The way she handled the situation is super admirable. The attitude she has is such a rare thing❤️💪🏻
Zhouxun(the one who played Ruyi) is like a super famous actress for her acting in China, she also have a bunch of other great movies you guys should totally see it!

It's bad enough that she tried to solicit perversion from someone she knew was higher in rank than her, then refusing to show respect even after Aunty Rongpei had announced the true identity of the woman standing in her presence. And that silly, lustful man is too blinded by pleasure to realise how much his wife loves him, and the fact that she is willing to sacrifice her own comfort and dignity in order to save his reputation and maintain his health.
I really like the actress who played Ruyi, the tone of her voice is just amazing and her mannerisms are natural and amazing she really looks like a royal member.

This series takes place over several decades. Through the lies against the empress, both of them, through the defamation and deliberate rumours, Ruyi’s years of imprisonment in the Cold Palace for a crime she didn’t commit, the murders of children, both hers and his, the torture of the innocent Suixian, her gentle maid servant, and the humiliation, castration, then torture and death of the loyal guard, Ling Yuche. This emperor, the character of course, was in the middle of her rape and the only thing that stopped him was his blaming her for ruining his arousal! Sweet heavens, what do you consider enough for a wife to suffer through and tolerate? How far did he have to go before you believe his wife should have left him? Or, since she cannot leave in this circumstance, should have stopped having faith in him?

I watched so many clips of this drama and I really enjoy the acting of all the actors and actresses, but I can't bring myself to actually watch this drama properly. I can't handle the idea of harems as all the concubines, servants, the empress often meets a tragic end because of the twisted patriarchal society and rules that revolve around them, and half the time it's because of the so-called emperor who can never acknowledge his own mistakes. Although Consort Ling is depicted as the villain in the drama from all the clips I have watched, I can't help but pity the women like her when this is just how their society worked, women back then had to resort to all kinds of methods to gain the emperor's affection all because of the ideals they were taught back then. Just thinking about it makes me frustrated.
It is available on TH-cam and I watched most of it but couldn't take anymore. It all ends tragically. Every arc twist and side story ends in utter despair. Its too difficult to watch
This is literally why I watch Harem dramas. Give me the scheming, struggling to survive and walking on egg shells without romanticizing history. I really dislike how so many Western period pieces have romanticized historical figures who were not all that great.
The Emperor greatly abused the only one who really and truly loved him. Through his abuse he killed her love. The cutting of her hair freed her from the tyrant's grasp. He never recovered her respect or her love. She was still loyal to a point. So sad.
All the official women he has at his disposal have been screened. She is protecting the lot of them and his fertility by making sure he does not go exploring.
He doesn't, if you meant some kind of death that would be like a "revendication" for what he has done. He lives till his old age. Spoiler!! It's actually the empress in this scene that do die...😢 And he doesn't even give her a funeral dedicated to people of her rank (this last part is true story by the way, the characters here did exist in real life...).
Ugh and the one time she speaks candidly as one person to another, after he passionately screams that he is so lonely and trusts no one, he slaps her. In the end, he didn't have the respect for her that Hongli had for Qingying.
This is remarkable- Empress tries to remind him of his reputation & he goes crazy Ruyi is so strong & even dares to raise the Emperor’s jealousy. His feels horror when she cuts her hair & realizes he is dead to her.
I love how the music came to a head when the Emperor mentioned Noble Consort Ling. Like Ruyi has always been compared to his first Empress since becoming the main wife; but being compared to Lady Ling was enough to draw a reaction from Ruyi. She will not have her name slandered in favor of Wei Yanwan!
Every inch an Empress. An amazing scene so well acted by both of them. The Emperor finally realised with the words she said and the look she gave him that he had lost her love.
And boy, he knew he screwed up to the point of no return. After her death, he regretted everything that he did to the one person who loved him with all her heart with no inclination of wealth or status. The only things she left for the emperor was the withered green plum tree and the destroyed portrait of them in their royal array. Those two items are a reminder to him that it wasn’t wealth or status that interested Ruyi, but the love of the person who loved her unconditionally.

Es increíble llegar a estas alturas de la vida de ambos y darse cuenta de que son unos desconocidos. Que tanto sufrimiento, esfuerzo y sacrificio fue para nada, pues en realidad este hombre no sabe amar a nadie. Él nunca supo que clase de mujer era ella, pues si lo hubiera sabido las cosas jamás habrían alcanzado este punto...es tan trágica la vida de Ruyi y es por eso que no debe uno vivir para nadie, sino bastarse a sí mismo.
La vida de emperador lo volvió asi según leí esa época el emperador era una figura casi divina por así decirlo, no se relacionaba mucho con la gente salvo los eunucos y una que otra chica del harem supongo que al ser así inevitablemente se volvió orgulloso y narcisista imagínate una vida en la que toooodos hacen lo que tú quieres, te "aman", te adulan, una vida en la que eres el centro del mundo por supuesto que debía de tener el ego por las nubes, por otro lado debía de ser una vida solitaria ya que todos a su alrededor esperaban algo de el no lo buscaban de verdad por lo que era sino por lo que tenía. from the very beginning of the show i loved how calm ruyi remained while confronting people and issues. She didn't lose her cool, she remained calm, silent and observant. She's smart and devoted and never went out of line. She always took precious and precautions steps whenever she's coming to a solution of a problem.

I knew this was coming because after watching Story of Yanxi Palace I got recommended this drama and accidentally spoiled myself here on TH-cam. I went through this stages: 😶So at the beginning of the drama I was like yeah, I understand why Ruyi would do that. 🤔Then I thought well, this seems like a good marriage, what could possibly go so wrong for Ruyi to do that? Oh boy, disasters were coming... 😥Then I wanted Ruyi to be evil like the rest, or a little smarter and less passive, I just wanted her to preserve her life as an empress. I knew this was coming but I wished so hard she would stop being so nice and just preserve her position... 🤬But then towards this chapter I just couldn't wait for her to do it, I was so impatient. I even cheered when she cut her hair, it was satisfying af ✨✂️ 😌Then I didn't even care if Ling got the justice she deserved or not, I was just pleased with the emperor's loss

I just realized something he kept comparing his first empress to ruyi and I’m like did he really know her or understand her? She literally looked down on some of the concubines, she made ruyi and another wear a bracelet that would make them unable to have kids, not to mention she colluded with a few other concubines to try to kill ruyi in many different ways cause of her envy. And he say that she wouldn’t act like ruyi ur right she’d act worse. When the hans women came she would’ve been more envious of her then ever was of ruyi, and why would she be ok with her husband messing with brothel women. My guess is he liked her cause she didn’t say what she thought she just went along with what he wanted while ruyi speaks truth and wisdom and says what needs to be said. If his mother was there to witness it she would’ve killed those girls and wei along with them.

Pues dsp de éste episodio, el emperador la encierra en su palacio, con lo mínimo indispensable, pero es ayudada x las consortes Yu, Ying y Rong para desenmascarar a Ling..se aclara todo, y el emperador al ver que se a equivocado, restituye a Ruyi como emperatriz, pero ella no acepta.. Estando el emperador de viaje, muere Ruyi en su palacio y el la libera de su cargo, y es reconocida como plebeya de su clan Ula-nara, dándole su libertad póstuma que tanto deseaba Ruyi.. In Real history the emperor only loved his first empress, they married when both were 16 and he When she died, he never approached the consorts, he was very affected and wrote poems to her every day for the rest of his life. Ruyi's serie is very fake based on history. Yanxi palace's more truth about the first empress because she was a very good woman and in this series yhey put her like a witch when she was humble, good and beautiful. She knows when to be cruel and when to be kind.
I agree, such a great comment, just what I was thinking while watching. She is hardly ever cruel in the series save for a few moments of extreme grief or suffering at the hands of unthink cruelty.

To add insult to injury Ruyi is the only one in the whole series that I have seen him slap not once but twice. I mean he did hit Consort Ling but that was only after He found out all the despicable treacherous things that she did and even that was like just a push.
Every time the emperor spoke he dug his grave more and more. We all know he sealed his coffin when he invalidated her contributions to his throne. Zhou Xun did a phenomenal job with this role 👏🏼

She looks like she'd be a better ruler for their kingdom... I've seen this scene before but it didn't show what the emperor was doing, surrounded by courtesans.. she must've felt the disappointment deep in her heart.
Those ladies weren’t even part of the imperial harem. They were commoners, “entertainers” brought by a scheming concubine to tempt the emperor. Such behavior is against the rules, and Ruyi was trying to convince the emperor of this.
But the emperor was too arrogant and prideful to listen.
To be fair, the show is historical fiction. He was one of the longest running emperors in history. She also was his second Empress. It's funny how in other Ming Dynasty dramas, her character is a villain.
@@rimun5235 She probably wasn't truly this virtuous in real life, but Qianlong's rule was plagued with corruption because he favored sycophants over those who would speak harsh truths for the benefit of the empire. His rule was marked with being the most prosperous in the beginning, but the fall of the dynasty started with his reign because that was when conditions started to deteriorate, and the seeds of it became so deeply rooted that his descendants were unable to salvage the empire's former glory. Ulanara was also a bit of a mystery because a lot of what happened, particularly surrounding the cutting of her hair, was covered up, suggesting that whatever transpired was potentially very embarrassing for the emperor. I wouldn't be surprised if historically he had been the true villain all along, just like in the drama. He probably didn't flirt with prostitutes, exactly, but he had to have done something pretty atrocious, because if the Empress were the one in the wrong, he could have just fired her with full justifications, rather than what he actually did, which was try to pretend she didn't exist and kind of ignoring her until she died, then erasing all records of her that he could get away with. He didn't even falsify things to say that she was a horrible Empress etc etc, he just whited everything out and pretended there was nothing to explain, leaving her character up to interpretation.

Historically, I think there were records stating that Step-Empress Ula-Nara was disposed because she cut her hair in front of Qianlong, but there never was an official recounting of why she did that. I find the drama's interpretation of this historical tidbit very interesting.
I think she had a good reason to cut her hair, but because the "reputation" of the imperial family they couldn't reveal the exact cause.
The way I interpreted it from the historical record was that she did it in sort-of public - when he and the harem were all at a meal. Though as you said, the reason was never given.
While I love LOVE Zhou Xu's performance in this series, it's about the only thing I love about it - even in this striking scene, they had to have Concubine Ling being exposition girl, with her "but us Manchu people don't cut our hair unless we're mourning!", like seriously? Who are you talking to, girl? The two people in the room with you know this.
In the Story of Yanxi Palace, the same scene was handled differently - while I'm not a fan of the characterisation of UlaNara there, the scene with the hair cutting was kind of better - I didn't know anything about the hair-cutting taboo of Manchurians, but I understood how it was a big deal, with the way everyone around her recoiled and looked horrified when she did it. I certainly didn't need someone piping up with an explanation!

The drama like many Chinese historical dramas is historical fiction. They are fun, involve characters that were real but the stories often are not.

At some point the victim becomes the abuser. In the early stages of their royal relationship, his mother is still basically ruling the empire. When he learns how to ‘hardens his wings’, that was when he was making his own choices, stepping from underneath his mother’s and father’s shadow. It worked, for a time. After that point, all choices and responsibilities were his… I want to know this story from his perspective, though. We’ve seen Empress Ruyi’s, seen Wei Yanwan’s- what does Hongli think happened?

Through the lies against the empress, both of them, through the defamation and deliberate rumours, Ruyi’s years of imprisonment in the Cold Palace for a crime she didn’t commit, the murders of children, both hers and his, the torture of the innocent Suixian, her gentle maid servant, and the humiliation, castration, then torture and death of the loyal guard, Ling Yuche. This emperor, the character of course, was in the middle of her rape and the only thing that stopped him was his blaming her for ruining his arousal! Sweet heavens, what do you consider enough for a wife to suffer through and tolerate? How far did he have to go before you believe his wife should have left him? Or, since she cannot leave in this circumstance, should have stopped having faith in him?

I watched so many clips of this drama and I really enjoy the acting of all the actors and actresses, but I can't bring myself to actually watch this drama properly. I can't handle the idea of harems as all the concubines, servants, the empress often meets a tragic end because of the twisted patriarchal society and rules that revolve around them, and half the time it's because of the so-called emperor who can never acknowledge his own mistakes. Although Consort Ling is depicted as the villain in the drama from all the clips I have watched, I can't help but pity the women like her when this is just how their society worked, women back then had to resort to all kinds of methods to gain the emperor's affection all because of the ideals they were taught back then. Just thinking about it makes me frustrated.

This is literally why I watch Harem dramas. Give me the scheming, struggling to survive and walking on egg shells without romanticizing history. I really dislike how so many Western period pieces have romanticized historical figures who were not all that great.
The Emperor greatly abused the only one who really and truly loved him. Through his abuse he killed her love. The cutting of her hair freed her from the tyrant's grasp. He never recovered her respect or her love. She was still loyal to a point. So sad.
All the official women he has at his disposal have been screened. She is protecting the lot of them and his fertility by making sure he does not go exploring.
This is the best scene for those 2 actors to play. It was as if they were born to play this historic power couple.

Ugh and the one time she speaks candidly as one person to another, after he passionately screams that he is so lonely and trusts no one, he slaps her. In the end, he didn't have the respect for her that Hongli had for Qingying.
This is remarkable- Empress tries to remind him of his reputation & he goes crazy Ruyi is so strong & even dares to raise the Emperor’s jealousy. His feels horror when she cuts her hair & realizes he is dead to her.
I love how the music came to a head when the Emperor mentioned Noble Consort Ling. Like Ruyi has always been compared to his first Empress since becoming the main wife; but being compared to Lady Ling was enough to draw a reaction from Ruyi. She will not have her name slandered in favor of Wei Yanwan!

Every inch an Empress. An amazing scene so well acted by both of them. The Emperor finally realised with the words she said and the look she gave him that he had lost her love.
And boy, he knew he screwed up to the point of no return. After her death, he regretted everything that he did to the one person who loved him with all her heart with no inclination of wealth or status. The only things she left for the emperor was the withered green plum tree and the destroyed portrait of them in their royal array. Those two items are a reminder to him that it wasn’t wealth or status that interested Ruyi, but the love of the person who loved her unconditionally.
Ruyi he lost you a long time ago, you are now physically leaving him. Great acting Zhou Xun! Love you!

La vida de emperador lo volvió asi según leí esa época el emperador era una figura casi divina por así decirlo, no se relacionaba mucho con la gente salvo los eunucos y una que otra chica del harem supongo que al ser así inevitablemente se volvió orgulloso y narcisista imagínate una vida en la que toooodos hacen lo que tú quieres, te "aman", te adulan, una vida en la que eres el centro del mundo por supuesto que debía de tener el ego por las nubes, por otro lado debía de ser una vida solitaria ya que todos a su alrededor esperaban algo de el no lo buscaban de verdad por lo que era sino por lo que tenía.
La escena con las bailarinas era comprensible el men solo quería sentirse normal por un día solo que ser emperador no se lo permitia, asimismo no justifica que hubiera despreciado a Ruyi

Aquí de lo que se trata es que él, siempre que convino a sus intereses y su posición, sacrifico a Ruyi y su bienestar, alegando que era necesario. Pero cuando se le alborotaba la hormona rápido olvidaba su posición y sus obligaciones! Las cosas que ella tuvo que padecer en favor de él no tienen nombre, en cambio él siempre tomó y exigió sin dar nada. Que él diga que volviendola emperatriz había saldado la deuda es una estupidez, porque él sabía que ella nunca quiso serlo, pero lo aceptó UNA VEZ MÁS para darle gusto. Todo en nombre de un amor que sabía recibir pero no dar.

He’s the Henry viii of China but ruyi had enough and NOW I wanna know what caused the real step empress to sever her connections like she could tolerate so much and then what irked me is that AFTER EVERYTHING Consort Ling did came out to light and proven ruyi true innocence once and for all. This wack ass emperor tried to give her seal title authority and everything back as if nothing happened and wanted her to go on his hunting trip...but go surprised when she she’d meant everything and everyone back and told him no that their relationship is dead and done

from the very beginning of the show i loved how calm ruyi remained while confronting people and issues. She didn't lose her cool, she remained calm, silent and observant. She's smart and devoted and never went out of line. She always took precious and precautions steps whenever she's coming to a solution of a problem.

I knew this was coming because after watching Story of Yanxi Palace I got recommended this drama and accidentally spoiled myself here on TH-cam. I went through this stages:
😶So at the beginning of the drama I was like yeah, I understand why Ruyi would do that.
🤔Then I thought well, this seems like a good marriage, what could possibly go so wrong for Ruyi to do that? Oh boy, disasters were coming... 😥Then I wanted Ruyi to be evil like the rest, or a little smarter and less passive, I just wanted her to preserve her life as an empress. I knew this was coming but I wished so hard she would stop being so nice and just preserve her position...
🤬But then towards this chapter I just couldn't wait for her to do it, I was so impatient. I even cheered when she cut her hair, it was satisfying af ✨✂️
😌Then I didn't even care if Ling got the justice she deserved or not, I was just pleased with the emperor's loss
Each time I watch this my heart breaks! The acting in this series was exceptional! A standing ovation!!!

I just realized something he kept comparing his first empress to ruyi and I’m like did he really know her or understand her? She literally looked down on some of the concubines, she made ruyi and another wear a bracelet that would make them unable to have kids, not to mention she colluded with a few other concubines to try to kill ruyi in many different ways cause of her envy. And he say that she wouldn’t act like ruyi ur right she’d act worse. When the hans women came she would’ve been more envious of her then ever was of ruyi, and why would she be ok with her husband messing with brothel women. My guess is he liked her cause she didn’t say what she thought she just went along with what he wanted while ruyi speaks truth and wisdom and says what needs to be said. If his mother was there to witness it she would’ve killed those girls and wei along with them.

Hermosa actuación de Ruyi..me encantó cuando va en el barco...ya libre de un puesto que no pidió, pero que se esforzó al máximo...

Pues dsp de éste episodio, el emperador la encierra en su palacio, con lo mínimo indispensable, pero es ayudada x las consortes Yu, Ying y Rong para desenmascarar a Ling..se aclara todo, y el emperador al ver que se a equivocado, restituye a Ruyi como emperatriz, pero ella no acepta..
Estando el emperador de viaje, muere Ruyi en su palacio y el la libera de su cargo, y es reconocida como plebeya de su clan Ula-nara, dándole su libertad póstuma que tanto deseaba Ruyi..
El emperador queda solo y triste, a los años, deja el trono al 15vo príncipe (hijo de Ling) y Jon ji, el único hijo que tuvo con Ruyi, se hace duque y vive fuera de la Cd prohibida, como hubiera deseado su madre..
La escena donde muere el emperador, es tan hermosa, xq sale Ruyi a su encuentro, cuando estaba joven..
