Do dirted tanks need water changes? Yes, No, Maybe?

  • Diana Walstad supports that dirted tanks do not require water changes. However, it may cause stress to many fish keepers, and in some cases they may be beneficial. This video is describing the cases during which water changes may be beneficial.
Usually during the first days of your walstad tank setup, in cases of extreme algae growth and dying matter, and in cases where you might have sick fish water changes will help maintain or restore balance in the aquarium.
Keep in mind though that many water changes or large water changes may compromise your fish's health. Sensitive species like shrimp are more sensitive to large water changes so take that into consideration.

Since coming back into the hobby I've been doing all dirted tanks!! I personally love them and as long as they're capped correctly with sand, I haven't had any problems ❤️ it has cut back a lot on my water changes especially after it's established!! Thank you for sharing this video!! I hope you're having a wonderful day! 🌿🐟🐟💚🙏

I absolutely agree marypaige. I do still run a filter at night, but this is more for surface agitation

I once tried to do an experiment and gradually switched from weekly to biweekly water changes in my planted tank with a goldfish. The goldfish developed fungus within approximately a month, and then I spent around a year curing the goldfish of the fungus. It got entirely cured just recently. At one point it even had fungus on its eyes.

It’s all about balance. If you do a capped dirted tank, and you have say 75% plants from the start, you won’t have to add anything for the plants for probably a year and by that time the fish load or bioload will then sustain the plants by putting nutrients back into the soil.

    Nice video.
Yeah, all rich substrates even modern Aquasoils will put tons of nutrients into the water column for 1st 30 Days.
Many aquascapers do 40% water changes daily forst week.
    Then 30% every 2-3 days 2nd week.
    3rd week 25% every 4 days.
After 30 days your then safe to reduce water changes to 15% per week or buweekly ir just to replace evaporated water.
Other do a "Dark Start" first 30 days. They add substrate & hardscape, add water then let tank stay without any animals or light for 30 days, no plants either kf course. Let the ruch substrate leech whatever it will do.
It will most likely self cycle with all that ammonia at first.
After 30 days add plants, fish & lighting.
Doing so reduces many fish diseases, stressors & deaths. Less plants die off & easier for them to also acclimate.
I would suggest not to do 90 or 100% water changes, evenbeith cycled established media. This alone will result in a "mini-cycle".
I've never heard of Algae killing a fish before, thats a new one.
Yes, if you have many plqnt leaves dying that can decay and add ammonia to water column.
Good Luck & keep your sleeves wet

U could dark cycle the tank for 3 weeks or so before planting.
It gives the soil time to breakdown and stabilise first.

My water changes are less in dirted tanks. I have walstad Ecosphere jars which have never required a water change

God video and your bettas look very healthy and happy in that tank 😊
In a few days I will pick up a 42 gallons fish tank with some guppies and ancistrus that my betta will move into. I want to make et a dirted tank but I’m now worried about doing that after hearing your story 😣 so sorry for your sick fish 😢
    Do you have any advise?
Also is the tank in the video unfiltered? I am a total beginner so I’m sorry if that is a silly question 😅

    • @impyshrimpy2451
      @impyshrimpy2451  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Yes the tank is without a filter. It is very common for large dirted unfiltered tanks to deal with a couple of problems for a while.
I haven't uploaded a video for a while but I can update that I have had a serious thread algae outbreak! Maybe due to the temperature and maybe because the soil I used had a small amount of fertilizers. Also, dealing with sick fish is part of the hobby. Undoubtedly it is sad, and I have lost two of my bettas while on vacation! Now the aquariums have stabilized and once I find time I will upload.
My advice is to study, and don't give up, no matter how ugly things get. Everything can be fixed.

Personally found toxicity in a new dirted tank is due to sand cap thickness, your caps seem very thin, Father Fish maintains at least 2" cap, which I've stuck to, and had no problems with water quality.(1" mud with 4" riversand or pool sand)
However, I did get a problem with parasites after not quarantining as I trusted the source, that caused flashing and some deaths....

I put one layer of dirt and a layer of gravel over it. The gravel I put in on top was not washed well enough and the whole Tank water is cloudy. Still waiting for the water to clear

@@rehan_awan1 👍🍻 takes about a week, depending on tank size, and cap thickness, also, beware of fish that like to "dig." They can dig right into the mud, causing problems, that's another reason I have thick caps ...
