    You had me giggling away. Awesome tips with the newspaper. I don't think anyone would notice

    I enjoyed your video and decided I would try to apply some of your spy techniques. I cut out and applied a moustache and wore a hat and visited my friend. I only had orange cardboard, but I thought I would try it anyway. To my surprise my friend did not recognized me at all. This person happens to be legally blind, but nevertheless she had no idea who I was, at least up until I spoke. I've yet to try it in public for fear that the gents in white coats would make an appearance and I'd have to explain my spy activities and give away your secrets.

    These are wonderful little cameras. My father, who was a machinist, taught me to appreciate well designed, well manufactured devices that involve precision tolerances. No doubt the Minox B fits these descriptions. At any rate, he allowed me to borrow his Minox B when it was time for me to go the Yucatan region of Mexico to do a minor surface archaeological project (late 1960s) which was part of my undergraduate studies. The Minox B performed without a single problem. I often had it in my pants pocket, ready to shoot any scene under tropical heat and humidity conditions over a six month period. I also had to document many close up shots of Mayan pottery shards, and as you may well imagine, the Minox excelled for such close up work.
    I still have the camera, and it has never been serviced, and it still fires as it should.

    Nice video showing the basic film insertion. Please if you know, show how to set the film speed for the metering. I noticed you inserted a 400ASA film but didn't calibrate the meter for the film speed.

    Just re watching this after your street photography video, on this you mention spying on a station, there is your answer for photographing strangers, I've used the station a few times and always got some great photos from it.

    • @zenography7923
      @zenography7923  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There's certainly a magic about railways, I've got some really nice shots myself on stations, and on trains, but they've usually been done with an iphone, which feels a bit like cheating, although I think it's a fantastic camera for low key photography!

      I'm lucky enough to live in York and esp in good light the station here gives fantastic results, and have used my phone there too and for b/w work it impresses.

    Where can you get minox b film from in the UK ?

    • @zenography7923
      @zenography7923  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's actually fairly easy to get hold of; it often turns up on ebay (sometimes at silly prices), or just google something like "buy minox film uk"and you'll find one or two suppliers; there are also a couple of places that will re-load an empty cassette for you for around five pounds or so. Hope that helps, and thanks for tuning in!

    • @TheBoatPirate
      @TheBoatPirate ปีที่แล้ว +1

      you can also get a film splitter that cuts regular 35mm film, getting you a much larger range of films to use. you would have to learn to load an empty cassette.

    I have a Minox "C" and am somewhat of a camera nerd. I think that all these "Minox fascination videos" might mislead people into thinking that these submini cameras take good clear snapshots. Film and processing is hard to get and expensive. Enlarging from tiny negs leads to mostly dim, grainy, unsharp small prints much like 8 mm movie quality. They work well copying documents though.

      I feel sure that your thoughts on this particular problem - are universal.....
      I've been caught in that very loop since 1978.....even in retirement I occasionally toy with the idea - without actioning any (fantastical) design...!!
      Thanks for lessening my feeling of inadequacy old chum....

      @@cityandsuburb I too have just started the journey. I owned a Minox C ( 1972 black version) for many years having bought it as more of a collectors item. It never got used. I now own a nice 1966 B model and fully intend to use it as much as I can for creating fun 'period' style images. 'M.S. Hobbies' in London are incredibly helpful. Minox specialists and real enthusiasts for the type. They will process/scan and print for you and re-load film cassettes and return them ready to go again. Obviously, this is not the worlds cheapest hobby, but it is manageable and really interesting fun if you enjoy this type of photography. Good luck!

      @@zenography7923 While it does not have a battery, The MINOX B does use selenium in the light meter which will die eventually (the MINOX B's light meter is very poorly sealed from the outside environment leaving it vulnerable to corrosion and oxidization). The selenium will degrade especially fast if you leave it somewhere humid, bright, hot or Florida, so try to avoid exposing your camera to these conditions if you are keen on using the light meter.

    12:04 has nothing to do with the film size though. Without moving the camera forward or backward, take a picture with the minox and the same shot from the same place with a 35mm film camera you'll have the exact same DOF. The image on the 35mm will just be a wider (uncropped) shot. It's when you back off with this camera to fit more into the frame you'll get a different DOF. But you can shoot rather close up with it. It's f3.5 which is why you get quite a bit of DOF. (and to some extent backing off from your subject to get it all in frame.) As you point out with the zone focusing line I never noticed before... when you're focused all the way in you're only getting between 8 and 9 inches... that's pretty freaking shallow if you ask me. Or at 2 feet you're getting 2 feet to 3 feet... also very shallow (my scale is in inches/feet).
