The gist of the whole thing is free turning of the pto shaft when the lever is in the middle of it's travel, operating band engaged when lever in up position, and the anti-creep band engaged when lever is down. The amount of turns of the set screws may depend on the wear of the bands. The operating band on this one is quite worn allowing the set screw to be almost flush with the casting.
Thanks for this video I have been diving into TH-cam pretty deep trying to find answers for my pto problems on a utility 350 gas with the torque amplifier. We pulled the whole pto assembly out today and all gears, bands and splines are in good shape. When the tractor is running the drive shaft spins slowly in the rear diff intermittently with clutch engagement in or out. Tractor drives fine and clutch seems to work perfectly for forward reverse operations just pto will not work. Any insights would be much appreciated.
Thank you for the comment. My memory of it is that there are two bands in the pto housing. One acts as a brake so that the shaft is safe, locked, so it will not turn when pto disengaged. The second engages a planetary to reduce the engine speed to 540 rpm. The lever mechanism toggles back and forth so the pto shaft is either safely locked, or completely engaged and brake off. Sounds like your problems could be solved with careful band adjusting. Again, this is going by memory, but should be close to what was in the video. Thanks for watching.
@@zeketheantiquefreak8518 we pulled the whole pto unit off the tractor to inspect the planetary and splines on the shafts. Started the tractor with the pto removed. The shaft in the rear end hardly spins and it's intermittent with foot clutch engagement in or out. So something else is not working correctly. Not sure if it's a clutch issue or a transmission issue.
@@realryandugger Again, going by memory... It is a long time since I had one apart: The clutch disk is of course splined, driving the input shaft for the transmission, at a speed determined by you through the clutch pedal. The pressure plate is also splined, turning the live pto shaft. Could the pressure plate splines or shaft splines be damaged? Something sounds seriously wrong if the pto housing is off and the internal shaft is not following/tied to the engine.
@@zeketheantiquefreak8518 thanks for the replies. It's weird though because we removed the inspection covers underneath and when you spin the pto it spins the gears in the front section after the clutch. But if you turn the motor over manually it doesn't turn the gears or pto. We were looking for a seasonal disconnect but couldn't find it. But again the tractor goes forward and reverse with no problems and clutch works fine. Wondering if the clutch adjustment is more crucial for pto engagement than transmission engagment.
@@realryandugger I think you are on to something... I had two three hundreds, one had the seasonal disconnect and the other did not. I cannot remember the procedure to engage/disengage the seasonal disconnect, but had used it. I will see if I can find some info on it, especially what to look for under the transmission case.
+MrDanoconnor - Glad I could be of help! I have found another housing that I can get the bands out of for repairs this summer. With that many threads sticking out of the one band adjustment, you can tell that it is past it's intended service life. Better safe than sorry! I did briefly run a threshing machine with a right-angle belt pulley adapter last fall. Mostly just to say I did!
+zeketheantiquefreak Great!...I Look forward to your Video on that Repair of the bands very much. I hope to get my 1955 ..300 Utility this Sunday, I will be Posting Videos as I Go. Have a Hydraulic Leak and Sloppy Steering to Deal with but She Runs Great. I Also have a 53 Super A and a 63 Cub. I've definitely Caught the BIG RED FEVER
When you have the time, check out the video for changing from 6V positive ground to 12V negative ground which includes a mention of electronic ignition. With these two changes, you cannot believe that it is the same tractor the way it starts and runs. If it runs great now, there is no need for these changes right away.

Just the info I needed. Nice video. Thank you.

Odd to see live pto but no fast hitch
appreciate it!
What about your project?
Oops... should say, "the 350 is identical in that department."
I am Looking to Buy a 300U that the Shaft is Always engaged,... this Video should help a lot, thanks so much for this.,,,, "Book 'em DanO"
