points costs are too high, thats the biggest issue. There was absolutely no reason to nerf our stuff AND increase our points cost. Our characters are especially egregious with this.
No matter what we get, 40k will always have the same problem while the inept Robin Cruddace is the head of the rules team. Edition after edition we get broken half baked rules, the only difference now is they trot out stu black one a quarter to tell us 'how seriously we take rules and balance'. Meanwhile for over 10 years Robin Cruddace has been asleep at the wheel not even bothering to play test rules and releasing stuff like 8th Iron Hands, and 10th Index Aeldari. If we really want a good game, it's time we started calling for a new head of rules writing who is actually good at their job.
I think at this moment, no rules will change for custodes, since considering the design and printing, the codex rules should be all settled. I think in Jan's dataslate, it will only have points changing for us. I think we will suffer for a while more.
I really think that devastating go back to mortals. No replacement dice effects count as “natural” rolls and therefore wouldn’t trigger dev wounds, critical hits, lethal hits etc.
GW: We're going to change points first, before rules to balance the game. Translation: We're going to change points around to push kits that have a higher cost-to-profit ratio.
As someone who played high level comp magic the gathering. Anything free that breaks the resource management of a game will always be problematic to balance. The less access players have to free stratagems the better. I can't see them adding in any other type to allow mounted captains access since its a mistake to have free strats in the first place.
Will rules changes not already be “set in stone” to have the codex finalised, printed, or ready to print in order to have them shipped and distributed in time for launch? Points changes in January surely would have been decided with a view to any rules changes in a codex less than two months after update, otherwise it’s potentially 5minths+ for correction of codex ‘updates over correction’ (but then GW is GW, no misfire is a surprise!!).
Hi, I'm new to the hobby and have chosen the Adeptus Custodes as my first army. I already have a Boarding Patrol. I am considering buying a Combat Patrol. Should I wait until the Codex releases to assemble them? Thank you!
Get the combat patrol for sure. You’ll never see a better value box for getting some sisters. Their individual box is insanely overpriced, but getting 2 sets in the cp alongside guard and praetors is so worth it.
I feel very uncomfortable seeing wardens and guards maxing out at 5, while everything else goes up to 6 I know that unfortunately GW won't go back to what it was like in the first codex where you could build squads of 3-10, but I think they should allow everyone to go up to 6. Wardens were previously bad because you either had 3 or 6, which was ridiculous, but if both they and the guards could have 3, 4, 5 or 6 that would be much better. As for the bikes and allarus, I would put 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6. For an army where each model costs a lot of points, allowing the addition of a single model is essential to make more lists viable
My Caladius picks up between 300 and 500 pts of enemy units per game; I could easily see it going up in points (and would be fine with it) IF it meant other units like Dreads get way better.
I think we get a bunch of points cut but the tank stays the same as putting tank up but the rest down would kind of not actually balance you’d still be on the same list
I'm worried that with the codex coming out soon after the dataslate, that GW will not change anything and just wait to see what the codex does for the faction. The change of Dev wounds did hurt us so much.... Tsons just chew through them.
I think itd be fine to allow 6 in a guard squad. Especially if the last guy has to be a standard bearer or something cause then at least we'd have a wound shield with 4 wounds. Itd also be nice to be able to use my forgeworld dreads lol.
I don't think that is likely to happen, purely because they seem to have realized the mistake of letting units include more models than you can get in an individual box like what they did with Wardens.
"Fixing" devastating wounds by making our fnp cover them as well would only be a bandaid as it would simmer mean that when the codex comes out none of the other detachments will be at all usable because Dev Wounds are just too common. The correct fix is to eliminate Dev Wounds all together.
Shield Host Detachment ability 4+ fnp vs devestating wounds Guardians and wardens squad size 3, 4, or 5 models Allarus squad size 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 9" movement on all the dreadnoughts
Aside from points costs that may need to come down a bit in some cases I think custodes are fine. They are very oppressive against many armies thanks to their statlines - the real issue is that the gatekeeper armies right now (eldar, chaos, votann) are all very good at removing custodes from the board - I believe the meta would shift enough from significant nerfs to those armies that custodes don't need as big a glowup as you propose in this video.
I can agree that more stuff can solve a lot of issue. People are saying that 150 extra points (which is roughly the average most lists being run right now would get with points going back to pre-dataslate) isn't enough, but that is 3-4 extra units of chaff or enhancements for your characters. When that is said and done, internal balance is horrible. In theory we have Guards, Wardens, Allarus and Caladius as viable Custodes units alongside characters to join them, everything else is mission play/chaff.
Dunno haven't used her. I don't run Custodian Guards in any of my lists so personally i don't have much of a reason to run her. I also love having double assassin for secondary's, and losing out on one of them for some extra shooting seems meh to me.
Dev wounds could also just get removed, there should never ever be a rule that makes saves obsolete, and change all units and give them leathal wounds instead, not needing to hit the wound roll is super strong. Or as you said 4+save against them. Ore just ignoring one save not all saves. At the moment the most OP combo I sav for was it 150 points are sternguards, having 3 shots and that thing that lets them krit on 5+ is so broken, they are better at killing tanks then eradicators
Thx for awesome Custodes content. What are your predictions about the Custodes Forgeworld units. Will they be released as plastic GW models, will they be legends when the Codex arrive, or will they stay as FW units?
I am 99% sure they will stay and not become legends. As for models becoming plastic, my best bet would be Sagitarum (currently it's just head and gun that is different from regular Guard) and the Tank (seeing as vehicles being more tough was a big part of the edition) and maaaaybe the Telemon.
@@RejnolsWhat about Agamatus? I have 18 Vertus Preators. Now I have 9 too much. But playing them as Agamatus I can field all my models. But do you think they will stay as well?
My only concern about dev wounds changing back is how is our codex going to give us anything nearly as good as it. Like what absolutely busted mechanic could we get that's better than just a flat durability buff?
I totally get that. I have brought that up before as well. The hopeful answer is they change it to be part of the army rule with Katah, and then maybe tone it back to being a 5+ to compensate for the fact we get 2 army rules.
Katah's could be switched to a detachment rule as it's not totally busted and could be replaced if there's other decent options The FNP should definitely be our army rule
I think I stratagems should get cheaper too. Compared to marines (particularly Ironstorm where all their strats are 1 CP only), our stratagems are way to expensive to use efficiently for such few models.
I disagree. You gotta remember how things stack. Custodes are all 2+ 4++ and making -1 damage 1CP would make it such a no brainer to use at any given time. Same for fight first which often results in 16+ wounds on the opponent due to the sheer number of attacks Custodes get. Would make them too good.
Metawatch is meh, but metamonday data is REALLY sad to see for custodes. If GW thinks that 3 bikes or 4-5 guards is going to fix custodes, then both tge codex and the January update ain't going to fix much. Also GW doesn't like low model count elite infantry armies. You are suppose to spend 800$ minimum for a basic army.
You are looking at it the wrong way. Right now you are spending 200-350 points on secondary units (Sisters, Assassins, etc) and foregoing getting that 5th brick. If they "just" revert the point changes, you can get that extra brick and still have points for secondary units. That's the difference between having say a Warden Squad with an HQ extra.
Man I hope in the new codex they fix Axes...there just isn't a point to them, and they look so much cooler. Make them hit the same atleast. They're just trash.

Either nerf the points or the ageis but not both
Just came back to tabletop and haven't played since 6th edition and now started a custodes army in for the release of 10th brother I am pumped

Yea, its sad. But you're right. Profits over playability, that's GW. It never occurs to them that they could actually do both.

You know out of all of this I just want the Telemon to be reworked to the beast it used to be. Lol oh and give us our 4+++ against Dev. Wounds.

Honestly the custodes do not have enough unit variety to mess them up every unit you buy is going to be useful sooner or later 😊
Get the combat patrol for sure. You’ll never see a better value box for getting some sisters. Their individual box is insanely overpriced, but getting 2 sets in the cp alongside guard and praetors is so worth it.
Chances are you are gonna need to get duplicates of any units anyway, so for now build as you please or for the current meta.
Chances are theres a new combat patrol coming out too.
Play what you like! Learn the game and worry about winning later! Build them up!

Check out inquisitor Draxos in a squad of custodian guard. Cheapish, and really slaps
Solid points all around. I would like to see the bikes take a heavy points drop tho so we can have some speed back.
I would like to see dreads movement increased. Maybe deepstrike back on them as well. Won't happen in Jan. but maybe with the codex.
Dreads didn't have deep strike before, but you could pay 1 CP to put one in deep strike at the start of the game.
My Caladius picks up between 300 and 500 pts of enemy units per game; I could easily see it going up in points (and would be fine with it) IF it meant other units like Dreads get way better.
It seems more likely to buff the custodes index detachment rule, than to rewrite the game to fix the custodes detachment rule.
I think we get a bunch of points cut but the tank stays the same as putting tank up but the rest down would kind of not actually balance you’d still be on the same list

Dev wounds makes custodes feel like literal paper, it feels so bad lol
Honestly, we just desperately need the FNP to apply to Mortal Wounds and Devastating Wounds. Get that, and I think we're in a much better place.
I think itd be fine to allow 6 in a guard squad. Especially if the last guy has to be a standard bearer or something cause then at least we'd have a wound shield with 4 wounds. Itd also be nice to be able to use my forgeworld dreads lol.

Guardians and wardens squad size 3, 4, or 5 models

And they should fix valerian to have deep strike and aleya to have anathema psykana keyword
Scout move for vigilators please 😭
