My personal rules for styling surfaces: 1. At least 50% of every flat surface (including walls and shelves) must be bare; 2. Every item must be functional as well as beautiful; and 3. Nothing smaller than a cantaloupe. This won't hold for everyone of course, but it works for me because I'm going for a clean simple minimalist vibe.

Jelly. I have so much stuff that has no function except to collect dust. I’m in the generation everything pretty needs a place in my house and “collect them all”. I love empty space but it may be too late for me. We “old people” just can let it go.

I had to come on this video to thank you. I am a firm believer in decorating to make yourself happy but I took your advice about decorating in three and let me tell you it made such a huge difference. I got so many compliments, something about that method just works. Thank you!

Great tips! Thankfully, none of these are things that I'm doing. I never thought about them, one way or another. I would love to see a video where you help us with where to find quality pedestals that are not too pricey, and tell us how to select one. I also have a blank space in my home because I have yet to find the right thing - a pedestal!

My husband is a collector. of antique camera and photography equipment; everything he’s collected is quite interesting and beautiful. But, it’s collecting keeps getting larger. I’m very anti-clutter (I’ve decided it’s because my mother saves EVERYTHING, and it drove me-and still does-crazy.) I’ve started moving some of his college to his office at work, it’s helped so much!

Arvin, I recently purchased a home and thank God I found your channel before painting and settling in. Because of your suggestions shopping and decorating has been a wonderful experience. So far I’ve purchased 2 rugs from your rug review video using your links of course. I got creamy dreamy shag wool rug and a jute rug. I painted all of the ceilings in Simply White by BM (love, love, love) and picked up 2 gorgeous hand woven baskets for pillows and blankets from HomeGoods. I am on the look out for one large abstract painting and have notifications set so I know every time you post a video! Thanks doll!

Arvin, I know you're not big on traditional décor, but using the same fabric for upholstery, walls, and drapery is a classic style (called fabrics en suite) utilized by design legends like Billy Baldwin, Henri Samuel, and Mario Buatta, and more recently by neo-trads like Aerin Lauder and Tory Burch. And to call that Daniel Romualdez bedroom done up in Braquenié iconic Tree of Life fabric (used by Hubert de Givenchy, Mark Sikes, Carolyne Roehm, etc.) a "mistake" is......a choice. But, yes, cheap, off-the-shelf fabric valences matched to table runners, pillows, etc., is a pretty sad look.

I was prepared to be like everyone should do what they like, but then I agreed with all of what you said and your examples. Even though my style is more shabby chic country, I have always subscribed to the 3 or 5 rule and agreed to the pictures rule, I love doing collage walls. At 62 I am still open to new ideas, thank you for your presentation, there are a lot of people who need help, I hope this helps others. PS: I used to do a rug, but we take our shoes off when we come in, and also some of our cats like to use the rug as a nap place.

    Hi Arvin,
I love your videos and your speaking out of my heart, most of the things your talking about is also real and happening in Germany!!! I have a question and request for a new video for you.
I'm looking for a nice, simple, but expensive looking, basic, in German : Polsterbett". (no boxspring!!!) I love this patted head and the simple Linon color.. As a basic for wonderful bedding. The only point have to be, it has to be available in Europe /Germany...
So, it's not "nobody asks " instead its :Tina asks "for a nice bed video, thank you and greetings from Germany
