There’s no way Azula would have ever turned out okay. Ozai saw his children as things, particularly things that HE made. So when Azula turned out to be a prodigy he was proud and arrogant of her abilities because in his mind HE had given them to her. The coolest meta I've seen on why Azula lost in the Final Agni Kai was about self care, and it makes a surprising amount of sense. See, the Gaang always takes time to relax, to have fun, to talk through their problems and express their feelings honestly. They have vacations and take their time, and they take days to just sort out their problems and go on life changing field trips (with Zuko). Azula, meanwhile, dedicates herself to ideal perfectionism, while ignoring or attempting to erradicate her flaws. She was the only one on Ember Island to brush off the potential for development, and when she almost talked about her internal conflict with her mother, she joked it all away. And because she never talked to her friends about *their* feelings, she ended up pushing them away and inviting betrayal. Without friends or happiness she was even more stressed, and attempting to repress her feelings caused even more pressure. Her desire for perfection and derision of anyone's feelings (especially her own) is what led to her downfall. If Azula had taken a vacation, spoken to her friends about each other's problems, and learned to relax then she wouldn't have lost her friends or her health. But if Azula had done all that, she wouldn't have to have been fought, because Zuko would have been able to talk to her in the first place. She wouldn't be the villain, and she'd barely be Azula.

I really loved Azula. She and Zuko were always my absolute favourites. I found her to be such a fascinating and well-written villain, a character with some true depth to her, a character that freaking tried to kill her own brother several times yet has me feeling absolutely heart-broken for her when she’s crying like a little child that has just lost everything. I honestly would’ve hoped the mother of faces would’ve decided to make azula forget about her horrible past life and give her an opportunity for a fresh start, taking all the painful memories away. Ah well ... I would really love for her to receive a dignified and positive end to her character arc. Maybe one day 🤞🏻
That's an interesting take. I sort of had the idea that Azula would only become a more whole person (healed partly, in a sense) by connecting with the spiritual side of Bending. I would love to see a series of her going on a journey of self-discovery, walking the earth and finding purpose. She really could be one hell of a Fire Bending mentor if she were able to reconnect the shattered portions of her psyche. Maybe The Mother of Faces would give Azula her mother's original face....
@@BrooklynRedLeg that's also a really cool idea, I would love a Soul-Searching-type of story line for Azula. Dunno if she would need a different face though, as we've seen in "Ember Island", outside of the palace, next to no one seems to know what the princess of the fire nation looked like. And, since my orig. comment is a year old, I also gotta say I kinda changed my mind on it, I don't think forgetting everything would be Azula's style. I think she could eventually learn to live with that, maybe through some travel and spiritual healing, as you suggested.
emojo1990 I agree! I remember seeing it for the first time on TV, seeing Zukos and her sister, Azula dual one last time (well until the Avatar comics released lol). It was quite an awesome scene for me when I was that young, but now getting older I really appreciate just how much sad and meaningful that fight is (along with it being awesome as well). :)
I believe Azula had genuine good in her. She was twisted into something her father wanted her to be and she witnessed first hand what would happen if she went against him. I do think her feelings of her mother not loving her played a part in it too. She felt her mother viewed her as a monster, but her father showed adoration towards her so she was willing to do whatever to keep it. Ozai severely damaged both his children, just in different ways.
@@1mol831 well after the wars end Zuko can be her guiding light. In the comic book the search you can see he wants to help her and be a big brother. Perhaps in time he can get through to her. Miracles happen. Sometimes things you never expect to happen, just happen. Also gap between Aang and Korra is 70 years. Azulas story stops at 3-4 years after hundred year war.
Despite her being a villain, Azula is one of my favourite characters in ATLA and will always be. I was hoping that she'd return in Korra, but that didn't happen... Post-Tim, I hope you've done a really good job with the editing, and Tim... thank you!
Jojo Ndv The second half of season 3 doesn't make for the whole series. It was with Iroh that he spent two complete seasons with, so I'd say the whole family team dynamic is legit.
Jojo Ndv Sadly, not everyone who watched Avatar have read the comics, or want to, so the general knowledge of an average fan is limited to the cartoon series. For most of Zuko's story arc that's been shown on TV, it consists of his relationship with his family (and the royal drama that comes with it) more than it does with his friendship with the rest of the main characters. It's why the bond between Iroh and Zuko is considered one of the stronger points in the series, and his bond with his father one of the most troublesome.
For a psychology of Azula video: have a look at BPD. Azula, to me with my bucket psychology but intimate knowledge of Borderline Personality Disorder, deffo displays the traits. Black and white thinking, extreme emotional reactions, very quick to internalise and blame herself. As a child I really related to Azula. I understood her. I never knew why - I worried I was psychopathic. But I got diagnosed with BPD and later looked at Azula and realised she might be there too. I don't think she's psycho or socio. She fits a BPD diagnosis so well - coming from an abusive background, which is common for BPD as I think you touched on in this vid. P.s. Lovely video. Disappointing ending for Azula. She deserves a redemption and to sit by her brother as advisor. Ells
Elley West I also have BPD, but I think ASPD fits her much more. She lacks the symptoms of abandonment issues, mood swings, self harm, and suicide attempts pretty strongly. I could be bias since those are my primary symptoms, but still, she lacks too many of the symptoms imo. She is reckless about her own life, though, I'll say that. But she also isnt controlled by her emotions, and is generally calm and calculated, which is generally the opposite of BPD, where we're just emotional, impulsive, and 0% calculated.
@@abbiepancakeeater52 Yeah, I don´t think she matches BPD very much either. She sure does in some ways, but not nearly enough to convince me, and ASPD does seem like a way better diagnosis for her. I was also diagnosed with BPD, although not quite rightfully (I just barely fit the diagnostic criteria and only for a relatively short period), and I do study psychology, so I have some idea about this crap.
Azula is probably my favorite character after Toph and Zuko. It's great to see that she has a story after the ending of ATLA. After she broke down, I could not help but weep for her. It gave her a lot more depth and made me want to learn more about her. I feel like even though Azula was a prodigy and Zuko wasn't, they are very similar lives throughout the story. Both wanting approval from their parents, both have are burdened by their "destiny"(For Zuko it was to capture the Avatar so his father would accept him and Azula to become Fire Lord), and both have a strong mental breakdown after getting what they wanted(Zuko being welcomed home by his father and Azula becoming Fire Lord). I know this is a bit of a rant but it's just so wonderful. I'll have to look up where to get the comics
Azulas story is so tragic and wellwritten. I remember wanting her to get what she deserves but then when you saw her break down like she inevitably did, I just felt sad for her.
Azula is not a psychopath. Yes, she's ruthless, manipulative and a damn good liar, but real life psychopaths have some other traits too that she clearly lacks. Psychopaths are born wired differently, causing them to feel some emotions only to a limited extent or not at all. This includes most notably love, passion, fear, disgust and guilt. The most amazing fact about psychopaths is that they NEVER have mental breakdowns. They are the only humans immune to depression, burn-out and PTSD! They can be tortured or see the worst things in war and come back as if nothing happened. Sure, there are other manifestations of antisocial personalities that are ruthless and manipulative and she clearly belongs into that category. Like Azula, most of them are shaped by the environment rather than birth.
I would say she is a semi sociopath, but yeah, mostly just has some pretty hard-drilled antisocial behavioral and emotional patterns, and deep down, is just a neglected child that adopted the exact right coping mechanisms to prevent herself to get any better in the future, as sort of explained in the video.
i personally love the theory that ming hua is azulas daughter. she said that she wanted to get revenge on the water tribe, so what if she had a child with a water bender and raised her as an amazing and ruthless bender. they have the same voice actress, and look kind of similar, i might be reaching, but i love this theory
It's an arc reactor. That's why when Azula tried to shock Katara in their final Agni Kai battle, Zuko sacrificed himself to save Katara, because he loves her 3000. (JK)
@@andrehill4266 idk man they could but I don’t know if they should. Having an entire series that goes back in time doesn’t seem sense. Like maybe a couple episodes for it or just in comics
Rember in ember island episode, when zuko sitting on their old house azula said: i though u wpuld be here, come on this place is depressing. I must be mean she fell something right?
It's a shame Azula didn't have a redemption at the end of third Series finale of the Legend of the Avatar: The Last Airbender like her brother Zuko, especially the fact that Azula went insane since both Mai and Ty-Lee betrayed her. At the end of the Series we never learn what became of Azula after she was defeated and captured except for the comic series because it there were plans to revive the the Legend of the Avatar: The Last Airbender were it continued from Season 3 then we would know more of Azula's fate like if she continued to be a villian.
Hold on WHAT?! Azula is younger than Zuko? I always saw them as being twins or at the very most one year apart, but that she was the older of the two. Here's why. Even though the world of Avatar is pretty progressive considering it's roots in Asiatic tradition, I still figured that Zuko was considered the firstborn because he was the first male born of Ozai, which is what it actually means because the family heritage and name carries on according to tradition, not who is actually born first. But also, Azula is named after their grandfather, Azulon, why would Zuko have not been named after him if he was first? That's where Avatar is progressive, _she_ got the name first. And not that younger siblings don't tease older siblings, but Zuzu seams like the name an older sibling would call a younger. She also is manipulative and lies to him all the time, just like how older siblings would to their younger siblings (of course I don't really know this, I'm an only child). But that's my biggest take away out of this whole video, Azula is younger than Zuko, and she was 14 in the show. Like... woah... everythingiknowisalie
Azula was a child prodigy. Maybe it showed really early that's why they went to the extent of naming her after Fire Lord Azulon. And she just love belittling people. I was even surprised she still called General Iroh uncle 😅
My headcannon says that the old due nation priestess who helps Korra remember who she is in the 2nd season of LoK is Azula when she's older. I like to believe she managed to find peace eventually.
oh man i forgot about that wail of pain and anguish Azula gives that you put in the intro. The voice actor for her absolutely NAILED that. every time i hear it it brings me back to when i had the worst strain of ecoli (worst pain i've ever had in my life). Im sure anyone who's been in truly unbearable and unrelenting pain can relate there.
Azula was one of my favourite characters even though she kinda sort of killed Aang and hurt Zuko. She had a hard life since Zuko wasn’t there (he was banished) and so she carried all of Ozais expectations it wasn’t her fault not to mention Mei (mai I don’t which one it is lol) and ty lee betrayed her, her only friends if my friends betrayed me I’d be pretty upset too
loser (not that ur a loser it’s just ur name lol) true but I think she only did that because that’s the only way she knew how to keep people on her side and be her friend
I love Azula since she and Zuko are such a fascinating foil. Its so hard and so easy to care for her and I wish someone could have been there for her, but she wouldn't allow it. She fully represents "you cant help someone who does not want to be helped"
Azula's psychological background is very much in the personality disorder cluster. Nothing she chooses to do is cohesive and matches what a normal person would do. Her mind is like a maze and she never really becomes "good." Maybe good from her own deranged, erratic mind. it's kind of not a surprise she would just drop off into an underground society now that she has no reason for her previous percieved purpose in life.. I think it matches what a person who has her psychological background do after something like that. The creators did a phenomenal job at designing her character.
Azula is like my sister except the fear and strength thing. She wants everything perfect the first time. But being perfect and flawless without experiencing the failures have their downsides. She grew up with the mentality that she can do everything perfect the first time. Any failure would give her a mental breakdown. Her first cupcakes failed, her piano recital, when she fails once, she’ll cry and scream just like Azula. That’s why that scene breaks my heart as the older brother needs to bring her back to sanity.
I think when Azula's mother told her that she apologizes for not loving her enough also did a lot of emotional damage to the fire princess. Because she probably did more self blame afterwards she already speculated that her mother didn't care for her as much as she did Zuko. Granted their mother didn't have all of her memories at that moment to come up with a genuine answer that still must have been painful for her to hear.
My head-canon says she was made into a Fire Nation sideshow attraction. "Come one, come all! Look at the caged sister of our Fire Lord Zuko! Don't get too close now! She bites!"
@@ChristmasCarolyn That all came from Amon. Who was actually a bloodbender that somehow figured out how to do a biological version of Aang's spirit based sealing technique. I recall that the idea came from his father who had been a criminal that had had his bending sealed that way when he tried to kill everyone at his trial. Plus, the Equalizers are all mostly well trained chi blockers which interestingly enough originates with Ty Lee and wherever she learned it from.
Yep, Zuko was a dissappointment to Ozai, because he was Ozai's firstborn who was never really good at firebending or didnt carry any of Ozai's traits. The fact that he was a firstborn male and weak (birth was hard), born in the winter(less sun), only amounts to Ozai's hatred for Zuko. Azula is secondborn hence why Zuko is even more of a failure.
Hey, I have a theory about the world of avatar the last air bender, to me it personally seems like the world is not as big as ours (as can be inferred by how far they travel in so little time and the size of ba sing se for instance being so big in proportion to the earth kingdom according to maps). This would mean that the planet would be smaller and if that is true it would suggest that the gravity would be lower perhaps that could explain why so many people are so agile and why fall damage is sometimes not that bad.
I effing love this channel, from their ATLA, HTTYD LotR videos, passing through their weird cool montages, and on writing series. And even I'm starting to rlly like the other content here, best channel
Notice how Azula went from being a perfectionist to now losing up. Notice how she has one piece of hair in front of her face when in the tv show she would have freaked out.
The Last Agni Kai was just... words cannot even express the amazing-ness of that scene. The music was phenomenal and so moving and the graphics were better than anything I have seen. It brought me so many emotions towards Azula I never thought I would feel, one being pity. With Azula being the best and really the biggest big bad, I never thought I would feel bad for her. But the last Agni Kai showed she was just a kid and that she was human. It was just so beautifully done.
I know you probably have a thousand request but I really would like to know what makes a good protagonist? Each time I write a protagonist I feel like anyone of my other character could do it. How do I fix this? Thanks in advance.
Honestly, I dont see that as a problem. In Lotr Frodo could easily be replaced with another hobbit (Possibly even a nonhobbit). Its Frodos choice to take his quest and he pays deeply for making that choice.
any one character CAN be a protag, so long as they have compelling motivations & obstacles to overcome that make them grow as a person during whatever external quest they're on. i think.
But doesn't the protagonist push the plot? So it anyone character can push the plot doesn't that make them less important? Shouldn't they matter more then the other characters?
@@victory1014 depends how you define 'mattering'. also, actually the antagonist pushes the plot for the most part of the story! the antag (be they a person or an event or a movement), is who or what causes the situation that inspires the protag to take action (one way or another - but protagonists can be pretty passive, too). they drive the external plot & cause situations that can be personal incentive for other characters to take some kind of action. can you give me the premise of your plot, so i can understand where you're coming from? perhaps your questline is so vague as to be universally applicable, or you've created a situation that affects all your characters similarly. in which case you could either make the quest contain smth that the protag needs/wants, or change up your cast. for example: 'there is a war & we need to stop it' is universally applicable. any character suffering from that war can feel that way. but, 'my mother is ill & she can only be healed by [ insert smth ], which is being held within the country that's leading the war' -- that's a trickier & more customised kind of plot. if your characters are 3 kids who all want to help their mother, maybe give them different reasons then an ill mother. 'i wanna travel the world & i'm not gonna let no war stop me lmao' is one, reckless & flippant. 'i'm secretly the child of a soldier who slept w/ my mother & left & i'm gonna find that bastard & punch him in the face OR & i feel closer to my dad's heritage than my mother's so i want to travel to the warring country' is another. they could all drive the plot, yes - so then it's a matter of who do you most enjoy writing? do you wanna maybe split the pov between all 3? you choose who matters. whether a character is important... depends on how you write them, how you frame them, how you deliver them to your audience!
I'd love to be able to help myself, but I think it would take an essay to do it. So instead, I would advise looking up Writing Excuses. It a podcast about writing (surprise surprise :P ) and it has a few good episodes and how to write great protagonists
Bob Reno You do realize that she brought Zuko back as a scapegoat in case Aang turned out to be alive. She told Ozai that Zuko killed the avatar so he would take all the punishment and blame in case he turned out to be alive.
I'm really really glad you covered this topic!! It's something I've really wondered about myself. When talking about Avatar with new people, a lot of them ask me "What happened to Azula in the end?" And I used to be able to tell them she ended up safe in an asylum. But now I have to add "Except the comics undid that and now she's on the loose with a gang of dangerous ladies plotting secretly to bring Zuko down in treacherous ways...😅" Kind of unsettling. And while her part in both comics was fantastic and gave us wonderful development for everyone, especially Ursa, I wish Smoke and Shadow would've given us something more to go on, especially since Gene is no longer writing (and this was his loose end). I really really hope Imbalance picks up on this!
A lot of TH-camrs I watch have been sponsored by Express VPN, but you're the first to actually get me to consider it. I need to get paid first, but I will return when I have money! :)
She was the granddaughter of the previous avatar. Ozai's dad thought his son and Ursa would make talented babies so they kinda forced her to become his wife
That battle between Azula and Zuko was absolutely heartbreaking. I didn’t see either of those character arcs coming and it reallly brought the show up to an A+ and nothing can ever top it.
I think the reason why Azula warned Zuko about visiting Iroh in the prison was because she had a plan. She brought Zuko back to Fire Nation only because she needed his help againts to Aang and Katara in Ba Sing Se. She manipulated him to join her and together, they defeated Aang and Katara. And Azula killed Aang in the avatar state, knowing that this would end the avayar cycle for good. Although she still had suspicions about Aang's survival, when she asked Zuko about it she immediately understood that avatar is most likely alive. That's why she lied about it to Ozai. She said it herself, "if avatar is actually alive, all the glory would turn to shame". Azula also knew about the Team Avatar's invasion plan, she knew they were going to attack on the Day of Black Sun. And since Aang was still alive, she knew that he would lead the invasion. Once it turns out that Aang survived when he shows up on the Fire Nation palace, Ozai was going to mad and punish Zuko for his failure. That's why Azula needed to keep Zuko around safe and sound, to use him as her tool. So she pretended she cared for Zuko there, but in reality she was just making sure that he wasn't going to cause any trouble until the solar eclipse. What I mean is that Azula as a farsighted strategist, most likely planned all of this. She kept Zuko safe, so he could take her failure. And once he was out of her way for good, the throne and power was all going to be Azula's.

You know, Azula calls Zuko weak, but from my point of view, Azula is the weak one because unlike Zuko, she will never know love , friendship or be able to use her powers in a more positive way, and that's why I think Zuko is more powerful than Azula!

But Zuko has Iroh so he ended up a decent man, Azula doesn't have a surrogate father nor mother like Iroh, therefore she is doomed.
Post-Tim, I hope you've done a really good job with the editing, and Tim... thank you!

If I'm honest, Azula, Zuko, and Iroh are my favorite characters. Not Team Avatar. The dynamic between those three is just...captivating
Jojo Ndv
The second half of season 3 doesn't make for the whole series. It was with Iroh that he spent two complete seasons with, so I'd say the whole family team dynamic is legit.
Jojo Ndv
Sadly, not everyone who watched Avatar have read the comics, or want to, so the general knowledge of an average fan is limited to the cartoon series.
Jojo Ndv
Haha! You should tell that to posts I've seen in every other Avatar video asking about Zuko's mother.

Ells
Thanks so much for your thoughts!

I feel this so hard
Hello Future Me Interesting points, and I just wanted to send my prayers for you guys and your conditions 🙏🏾
*excited fear*
Azula is a cold hearted narcissist. Pure evil.

Third, i guess? Speaking of which, will we ever see Azula in a third installment of the comics?
I want to sing with you
@@rain1676 ok
She bites!"

WAIT. AZULA IS YOUNGER THAN ZUKO???!!

This would mean that the planet would be smaller and if that is true it would suggest that the gravity would be lower perhaps
that could explain why so many people are so agile and why fall damage is sometimes not that bad.

I love how you gave in to doing the commercials or whatever, but you had fun with it
Even though I knew Azula was Zuko’s younger sister I always imagined her to be like 17.
That battle between Azula and Zuko was absolutely heartbreaking. I didn’t see either of those character arcs coming and it reallly brought the show up to an A+ and nothing can ever top it.
Huh. Azula's self appointed role here really reminds me of Morgan le Fay.
Hopefully things don't end up the same way 😨
I think the reason why Azula warned Zuko about visiting Iroh in the prison was because she had a plan.

Her breakdown scene is the saddest one in the entire series
In smoke and shadow it’s implied she’s in the shadows helping zuko
Great video man, a very interesting topic and commentary.
