      I have a stereo Leslie emulator that I plug into right now, but I aim to get some real spinning drums, and a twelve-string. Yeah, it's pretty sweet, ❤ I have #19 there but I hope to get another one for the full dual Brotary. You should hear it - It sings! It dances! It crawls upon its belly like a reptile! 💃 well idk, it's rockin'.

  • @Jenairaslebol27merde

    that rotating motor/scanner assembly looks very cool! .. but i wonder why it sounds rather like a tremolo (periodic varitation of volume) instead of a vibrato, which is variation of pitch. even if some instrument effect manufacturers have mixed up those two names in the past, hammond used it correctly on their vintage organs. when you switch on the effect on the organ (V1/V2/V3 setting) you can clearly hear that there is pitch modulation only.
    but you can also select the chorus effect on those organs (C1/C2/C3 setting) which mixes the vibrato signal with the clean signal and thus creates a very nice and complex effect with variing destructive frequency attenuation etc that will partially result in a light tremolo sound (but not only!). i do not know if "The Scanner" maybe used the chorus circuitry (and there is also no selector switch for vibrato or chorus as far as i can see ..) but to me it sounds more like just a tremolo effect.. :/
    but nice design though and cool idea to change the speed, which would be stupid on an old organ .. ;)

    • @andinbriwel1092
      @andinbriwel1092 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jenairaslebol27merde both the vibrato and the chorus effect come from the scanner. The scanner is a spinning open-air dialectic variable capacitor, is it’s actually creating a varying low-pass filter affect and running it through a delay line. Stacking the delayed, varying waveform on top of the played waveform creates a perceived pitch-shift effect on the organ, where the tone generator is creating consistent waveforms. On a guitar, the waveform is not consistent like it is from the organ’s mechanical oscillator circuits - it varies over time and from pluck to pluck - so the effect is going to give less pitch shift and more of a variable, pulsating filter affect.

    • @lynette9021
      @lynette9021 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@andinbriwel1092oh is that it! I read the scripture and it seemed like it was just Vibrato, I attributed the Tremolo-type throbbing to variable gains from all the different modules scanning or being scanned or whatever. It really defies those descriptions because it is not really something that simple, as far as I can tell, through the big headmuffs and earplugs and with the other adjacent mayhem... 🙉

    OMG what a glorious sound!!!!
    2K!!!! Ouch.
    But your saying this is out of an old hammond organ? Any special model?
    Ive NEVER seen such a device. It looks like the sound transfers to a metal wheel like the old binson echorec.
    So these parts may be available on say Ebay??
    Its just sounds Sooooooo good.
    Im on a mission now.
    Thanks for the great preview AsUsual.

    • @svorkoetter
      @svorkoetter 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Pretty much any model before they went solid-state had scanner vibrato. The metal wheel is just the clutch (in case the scanner seizes up). The vibrato is created by a delay line and a scanner (the large flat cylinder on the left) that samples taps on the line in sequence, back and forth.
      My only complaint about this is that it destroys a vintage Hammond organ. A vibrato scanner belongs in a Hammond organ, not a guitar effects box. Maybe people would stop doing this if we started cannibalizing vintage guitars to fix organs.

    • @andinbriwel1092
      @andinbriwel1092 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Stefan Vorkoetter or maybe someone could actually start buying those old M100’s & H100’s off craigslist and restore them. Trouble is, a fully working H1xx series goes for $400. Those Hammond models that nobody wants because they aren’t a B3 get stripped for parts to restore the B3’s, A105’s, C3’s, etc, and the scanner isn’t something that ever goes bad, so there are many spare scanners by now.

    • @lynette9021
      @lynette9021 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@svorkoettera lot of old Hammonds are scrapped, you save bits for reuse. I suppose that it would be great to put Scanners into production for guitar, but this thing was affordable 👌 and I don't play the Organ.

  • @watkinscopicat
    @watkinscopicat 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    hmm this is awesome but just leaves me wondering how us guitarists would feel about someone chopping up vintage guitars to modify their hammond organs?

    • @andinbriwel1092
      @andinbriwel1092 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Neale Scott it’s painful, but people can’t get rid of Hammond H100 or M100 series organs, even if they’re fully working. There’s a beautiful, fully functioning H100 on Craigslist right now that’s been listed for over a month and is down to $400 asking price. Non working ones are plenty, super cheap and not financially worth restoring. The vibrato scanner really isn’t a component that wears out - if they stop functioning, it’s typically because they got over oiled and can be brought fully back with a careful cleaning. So, there are far more scanners available than organs that need them, at least for now. I feel the same way about people cutting the keys off Royal typewriters, though!!

    • @RudolfWolph
      @RudolfWolph 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Lucian Fitzgerald They probably are-- any Hammond that isn't a B3 can be found pretty cheap on craigslist. I got my M-103 for free, and not much was wrong with it at all. Even the cheap spinets have a great sound to them too-- Green Onions was recorded on an M3, and A Whiter Shade of Pale was recorded on an M-102. I don't think most people realize how easy it is to get your hands on a great sounding instrument, and Analog Outfitters aren't the first ones to profit off of this cannibalization-- the famous Dr. Z. Carmen Ghia is based on a modified Hammond reverb amp.

    the only organs that used this scanner were the 2 switch consoles
    (A100/B3/C3/RT3M/2/3/100.) most likely they would get these out of an M or
    M100 which you literally can not give away. I've junked at least a half
    dozen spinet models because no one wants them. people complain about "old stuff" getting scrapped, but when they're for sale, you can't get rid of them. these scanners are nothing but rotating variable capacitors.

      no google plus the last year these scanners were manufactured was 1975, so, if you find one, it’s already at least 33 years old. The one in my personal organ is 57 years old, never needed rebuilding and is running strong. As near as I can tell, if you don't oil it for too many years, it will start to make a bunch of hideous racket, and might even quit working until you oil it up again. I expect that this will outlive most of my gear, and it seems easily repairable.

    First the B9 pedal now this!? Why don't you guitarists just learn how to play organ/keyboard if you want that sound! Next keyboard i'm going to fix is going to use the guitar neck as my sustain pedal. Did they even take the plate off of the Hammond too that displays the Oiling instructions for the scanner? That thing is going to fling off dirty oil and pretty soon you won't be able to see the insides. Look inside a Hammond organ. Smells like oil. This thing is also sitting on a metal chassis. In Hammonds, oil absorbs into the wood. Metal sure doesn't absorb oil, so where's it going to go eventually? Gonna be some nice stripes on the inside of that plexiglass...

      No fling, oil is pumped by capillary attraction. If there is any seepage, I can wipe it off when I oil the wick.
