- Join portrait photographer Mark Mann on set as he photographs some of New York City’s premier dancers from different disciplines. Natural light photography inspired by Irving Penn.
In this video, Mark photographs the dancers as they dance, then gets up close for portraits. This series of photographs was heavily inspired by the great Irving Penn (one of Mark’s favorite photographers), and exclusively used natural light. The dancers he worked with are some of the premier dancers in New York City and are from The Martha Graham Dance Co., Complexions Contemporary Ballet, and Dance Theatre of Harlem, among others.
For this photography series, Mark has partnered with choreographer Loni Landon, who helped organize everything and make it happen! We also have Alex on set digiteching and making sure Mark gets the best possible images.
The dancers are Havoc Marche (@officialkinghavoc), Larissa Gerszke (@larissagerszke), Lloyd Knight (@lloydknight), Rena Butler (@renabutler), Alexandra Hutchinson (@a_ballerina_), and Loni Landon (@lonifaye). They are all exceedingly wonderful!

Really fantastic to see this. Like most people watching this I came here for inspiration and I, for one, definitely found it! Thank you so much for sharing your project.
Right! I'm off to shoot something 😉
Thumbs up for the leg show.
Ooh spicy 🌶️
That is so cool. I love the way you use the light. And you should keep going with the book idea.
Awesome as always boys.
Wow this is so amazing! Can’t believe they can do all those moves!
Love Mr. Penn, and love these shots. Also love the slight sepia you added on the B&W conversions, as well as showing the edges of the backdrop. Well done!
Magnificent!

Top job! This is exactly why I love photographing dancers more than anything else ❤. I normally use strobes, but I'm finalizing my own daylight studio, and I'm really looking forward to the possibilities that offers. Do make that book!
Funny you should say this because the book went on sale today :)

@@ComplicatedThings It would be nice indeed, but I find there's an ocean between us (I'm from the Netherlands). ;-)
@@ComplicatedThings I'm checking if I can order it locally. Can't wait to see the images in print!
Mark says he is a very good swimmer and would offer a lift :)
Also if you can’t get it let me know and I will see what we can do.

@@BougVR Thanks! Appreciate it. Big fan of your work for years and glad you started this channel.
@@AZAgency1 I'm blushing.. thank you..
Mark, this speaks to my soul. As a dance photographer, I've suffered through COVID. I had to sell my camera to make ends meet and keep the family a float. Seeing this shoot has re-kindled my hope and affirmation that dance will be waiting for me when I can afford to buy my camera back and get back to work. I appreciate you Complicated Beautiful Things!
@@h.rossjacobs500 oh man so tough.. I hope things work out for you... I think its going to pick up..
Hey Mark, you didn’t mention me at all! I am also an esteemed artist here in NYC. If you need any information regarding my bio and my career, please reach out to me directly or Google me. Thank you!
