Strobist wrote an excellent review, as did Eric Kim (who received the book as a gift from a guy called Bill...hmmm). Great video, very apt observations. Dan Winters has been my favorite artist for 30+ years ever since I saw his work in Texas Monthly. I was fortunate enough to be a member of the photographic circle that was involved in the premiere presentation and photographic exposition from the book in a little town in Italy in 2010.
Unfortunately we were an small organization and weren't able to bring Dan in Italy at the time, for economic reasons. Without any doubt, that was the most important show we have organized.

"Scatti dall`America" means "shots(in the sense of pictures) from America". "(I) Scatti" (plural, noun?) comes from "scattare" (verb) which today does mean shooting a picture and probably has it´s origin in a previous and other meaning of scattare: a sudden (also mechanical) movement be it opening or closing, obviously related to the shutter. Thank you for your wonderful and inspirational posts.

Most of these are for magazine work, so would have accompanying text and context to give them more meaning.

Listening to your review of his work and seeing some great examples, I put his name into an eBay search and after days of expensive copies I couldn't justify purchasing, I bought myself a slightly used copy of the Grey Ghost by Dan Winters. I have got to say, I was MASSIVELY disappointed. The images mostly were mediocre at best. One or two I liked but most of the street photography had little (if any) story (visual story that makes one 'listen' to the photo). I can only presume that his work improved between the publishing of Grey Ghost and The Road to Seeing as the latter is a considerable improvement on the former. I'd suggest to anyone thinking of getting a Dan Winters book to give Grey Ghost a miss even at the discount price of £20 that I paid for it or, at least, go and see a copy in your local bookseller or library before spending money on it.

He started out in Southern California as a model maker worked on the original star wars series stuff, I'm quite sure his photography was greatly influenced by movie makers at the time.

It would be very easy to just go out and copy Dan Winters style. But what did you miss? That's where you really learn. As an old photographer I always recommend doing this. You learn a lot. You do have to be careful who you steal from. Before PhotoShop trying to learn from Ansel Adams by trying to copy him was a guaranteed failure. Trees sure, but mountain tops? There's no where else to go. Edward Weston on the other hand is a great teacher. If, as I've done numerous times, you set out to make your own 'Weston' 'just like...' and you have some level of skill and practice (even as a beginner) as often as not you'll end up with an image completely different from the one you set out to copy, but it will be a better image than you might have made without this approach. You will also have extended and grown your style and skills, and the images you make you'll like and be proud to show.
So if Dan Winters actually did set out to copy Irvin Penn, it's clear he never intended to only just copy Penn, but to start from there.
The 'gentleman' at 6:05 is the Pop Artist Jeff Koons. So the funny eye reflection is a terrific and fun comment on Koon's art. Brilliant image.
