besides i do not think that the absence of the numberpad is much of a problem. The port orientation is totally fine especially if you want cables out of your way. Also speakers on gaming laptops sound good rarely and that is why I use a headset. The command center may be disabled and you can always change the settings you need using the BIOS that works very well.

Also do not forget that the GPU may cause the heat pipes that are connected to the CPU to heat up as well which may contribute to the lagging. Try underclocking the GPU. DO NOT UNDERVOLT THE CPU,GPU and the RAM BECAUSE THAT MIGHT CAUSE SEVERE STABILTY ISSUES!

  • @g33k98
    @g33k98 2 ปีที่แล้ว +14

Based on my tests, I think the thermal throttling of the Gen12 i9 is probably a norm/nature of the beast. Even though it is showing thermal throttling, the processor is kicking butt in tests... IF... you do the needed tweaking to get around the Dell stupidity. AWACC is definitely horrible and how the thermal settings are handled are atrocious. When running TimeSpy, my GPU won't go above 140w unless I set the Thermal setting to Full Speed, which leaves the fans on at full speed even at idle. I did run Cinebench R20 and I'm getting 6547 (Full), 6455 (Performance), 6347 (Balanced), and 6110 (Quiet). TimeSpy... I was hitting 13,900 on the CPU. I DO have to overclock the GPU due to Dell doing something horrible, but then I'm hitting 14,000 on TimeSpy (Disable Advanced Optimus in Bios and running HD 1920x1080). I have the same unit and I'm happy to run some comparison tests, if you'd like.
    Direct responses to your list:
    1. it appears you might have a bad unit, which might need to be addressed prior to telling people why THEY should not purchase this machine. Before contacting support, make sure you do a reinstall of the OS and retest. Dell will make you jump through many silly hoops before having the machine fixed or exchanged.
    2. Ignorance and/or anger about YOUR machines thermal issues that need to be fixed (possibly re-paste or bad processor)
    3. Agree. Is it only on the Cherry Keyboard that they are not lit or is it on the standard as well? I have the Cherry and not impressed (very tingy)
The num pad is Personal preference. Keep in mind, this is a 'gaming' keyboard. I've been gaming for over 30 years and never used a num pad. If you are a gaming-accountant, use an external num pad. I'd rather they leave off the num pad and make room for larger batteries, better cooling, better speakers (Dell FAIL), etc. **My Opinion
    4. Reinstall the OS without using their software if you do not want to use it. There are other software programs to control your CPU and GPU... but then you cannot control your lights and fans. As I mentioned above Dell AWCC Sucks... Big Time!! I agree. They are mostly controlling everything from the BIOS and giving us a software to try and make us think we can overclock, when we can't. But it looks pretty.
    5. Yup... but who games without a headset?
    6. It is cleaner having them in the back and how often are you having to plug stuff in and out. If anything, I wish they also put the power cable in the back. Stuff sticking out of the sides can get in the way of mouse usage. Lazy people are making this complaint IMO. Plug in an external hub and make things accessible. I use a USB4/TB4 Hub and run all my external stuff through that so I only have 2 plugs to deal (power and 1 usb).

I agree with so much that you said. I have had several exchanges of my machines for different reasons but they all were worth the money and performed great. I am trying to find the best mix of specs to fit my goals amd I think I have with the x17 r2 3080ti i7 uhd. They all run hot. They design them that way. My older thicker Alienware laptops had loud fans and ran hot too but they didn't perform anywhere near as good and were less portable. If you aren't thermal throttling then you're leaving performance on the table. These CPUs arent supposed to stay at their max boost speeds... they have a base speed and boost as temps allow for it. They are designed to throttle. That's not a reason to not get one. For any comparison of bemchmarks between different manufacturers it's hard to dispute that Alienware laptops remain near the top so the idea that they are throttling too much doesn't seem supported when compared to other manufacturers.

Yeah I know, currently DELL is yukking big balls. I hope I got a bad unit. because if my swap unit will be as bad as my first one, I'll get an A51m R2 ASAP!!
I partially agree with your assumption that the 12th gen should run hot. Well, I don't think that they intentionally design a new Chip where 3 cores always thermal throttle (also at idle). I hope that I got a faulty unit and the replacement will hold its promises.
I've tried everything, humanly possible to resolve this issue, but it still throttled at idle. (only 3 P-Cores)
The problem is that if the cores are throttling, the performance will drastically decrease.
I've seen the 12900HK reaching over 8500 Points in CBR20

@@humanoit7533 yeah I think you got a bad unit. I'll be keeping track for your updates once you get a new one. You got your x17r2 before me which made me start following your journey but once I got one and gathered some results I found that typically these get a timespy score in the 13000s and a cinebench 23 multicore score between 16,500- 18,000. Those are the main paramters I look for. With so many cores and the way they build these chips, if my overall numbers fall in this spectrum then I'd assume I had a sufficient unit. If I didn't, then I'd exchange asap and let them know I have a deffective unit.

I see people having similar issues with other brands. I got the x17 r2 with 3070ti and it works perfectly. I play red dead2 on ultra everything and Temps never go over 80. I've used several different gaming laptops over the years and had bad luck and good luck. I've used msi, razer, alienware and Asus mix luck with all. All of them I had to tweak things to get them to perform as advertised. My current x17 r2 had to play with the sound settings to get the speakers to sound decent. Made a big difference. Performance wise have yet to miss with anything other than setting up my own fan profile. I have seen some where it doesn't switch to dedicated graphics on its on which affected performance. Thank you for your video. Keep up a good work 👍
Let's go through what you explained to make it easier for our eyes to read 🤣
1st: It was very weird to see that even during idle laptop's hardware deemed that temp too hot and it started thermally throttling. I mean what the fudge it is... May I ask at what power profile it was? Next is 100°C temperature during load and yet still wasn't able to reach 6900 points in R20 or above which is a standard for that CPU caliber and that, as you explained, contributed heavily by thin chassis. I mean what will 4 fans will help if the cooling system is not able to dissipate heat away. It makes no sense but that's Dell we are talking about so I will not ponder anything because anything they do, they simply break 🤣
    2. Thin chassis, this is a self-explanatory and I will not delve into that category because as you saw what thin chassis did to that laptop with i9-12900HK and RTX 3080 Ti. Hell even Razer is better (not sure about that because I haven't checked their laptops yet)
    3. Secondary keys should be lit because that's somewhat standard for every gaming and professional laptop. As for Numpad, I think it is a personal preference so that's up to the individual.
    4. Software! I foken 100% agree with you. Their software is a trash and it is even same thing by today. They haven't done anything to improve or to optimize or to fix it!
    5. What the hell? Speakers stopped working after a few hours? That's unreal!
    6. Plug barrel or whatever it is called should be on the rear side and use only USB-C at sides because those are small.
So, if I was buying the new Ali-- no, Clownware, I would buy different brand. I don't have enough information of the past Alienwares so I cannot comment but I would definitely go to Asus or Legion or MSI. They are miles better than this Clownware. Okay enuff said. Cheers 😉

I replaced my monster MSI gaming rig with the Dell laptop. The old MSI Dominator sits silently nearby running at 26 degrees C while the Dell fans are now failing and making more noise than usual blowing enough heat out of it with the IETS cooler to heat my entire office. I would not spend over 4K on a Dell again. I do recommend the MSI. It's easier to upgrade and it is a workhorse.

I have the 330W brick and it does go hybrid after one hour of running. I could see the Alien head blinking which means it’s in charging mode. In theory it’s to protect the battery and discharge about 5% per hour until it reached 30% or similar. Once it goes in this mode it does feel like the CPU is backing off a bit but because of all the issues I’ve had it was hard to spot when it started and if there was a difference.

either the unit is briked from factory and you got the low nr either you dont know Alienware to god. I had alienware before and had no problem with it. Its very true that the temperatures go very high but thats becouse there is a High TDP on the CPU in a small form factor , witch is normal nowadays for laptops. Thermal Throtteling issue can be resolved with a LM repaste (If you know how to apply LM) but before that even , reinstall Windows , debloat it , get rid of all third party sofware whats not needed to run the machine and then do a benchmark . I have a MSI laptop now 10th gen 10870H and on full power it scores up to 10250 multicore score in cinebench R23 and about 9500-9800 on ballanced mode so that score what you show there on a 12th gen its practicly impossible or its running on 4 cores or Pcores are deactivated.Alienwares are good machines , not the best but good. And for laptops today wich have high TDP cpu-s its perfectcly normal to reach up to 100 degrees in CPU temperatures. If it goes over 100 its a problem , but again even that can be fixed with LM conductonaut.

  • @josephchristianruiz6581
    @josephchristianruiz6581 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Cause:
    1. Lack of mounting pressure, therefore airgaps will occur onto both CPU and GPU. When there are airgaps, it causes the applied thermal compound to spill out due to the overpump effect. Since the airgap itself isn't sealed off and not compensated properly, it causes micro air pockets onto the very application itself. Therefore it weakens overtime and it spills out as the heatsink expands when it gets heated and contracts once it cools down leaving the thermal compound outside the silicone die.
    2. The quality of the thermal compound for the gpu has a low watt per meter kelvin so it doesn't really transfer heat as fast as it could, as for the cpu side the Liquid Metal can't properly infuse itself onto the copper heat spreader due to the airgap and the copper purity of the heatsink isn't that good. End result is it rejects the liquid metal and will amplify the heat at the surrounding areas of the chip, and it will spill out and could possibly desolder the SMD capacitors of the cpu. The amplified heat could cause voids onto the BGA and overtime it may crack or cause bridges under the chip and the sole fix is to reflow the entire chip and to check for voids so that it won't happen again.
This issue has been going since the release of the Alienware M15/17 R2 (July 2019) although it just worsens overtime since the x15/x17 are using semi conductive thermal interface material this time. This does not only apply to Dell, but this also applies to the Asus gaming laptops with applied liquid metal onto their Ryzen 9 cpu's and they overheat out of the box really quick based on the benchmarks on YT.
That's why it is crucial to have tools where in you could perform heatsink diagnostics even before the actual application itself so you know where are the airgaps located and to know how thick the airgaps are so you could compensate it and to minimize the error of the application itself.
    Is it worth it?:
No because it's a pain in the ass to fix the thermals and the liability falls upon to the repair shops who will tamper the device even though they're not aware such issues with the heatsink exist. Another risk is the LCD cable itself due to the front bezel heating up since the hinge bar is closest onto the heatsink and when the bar gets heated up it also affects the front bezel therefore you may end up with a defected LCD cable (2-7 beep code error, which pertains to the LCD) and you may end up costing hundreds of dollars just to replace the LCD assembly alone.

I'm really sorry your laptop isn't working. I think all the points you made are valid. Although, its thinness is its selling point, its too thin. Since, no one is breaking the fundamental law of thermal dynamics, it becomes one of the fastest laptops out there but not the fastest. Having said that I can game with my r1 for 8 hours straight beautifully.
The speakers, in short suck. Agreed 100%. I've compared them to my 13in m1 and its night and day. Thats not even the pro. All Dell had to do imo was put the XPS speakers from their own product lineup and presto.
I equate using ACC like going to the DMV, 😂
I dont understand why you wouldn't have secondary functions lit up, I have actually used the flashlight in my phone to find them.
No number pad is easier to overlook on a gaming laptop but thats just my opinion.
Lastly, no QHD option? Thats a pretty egregious oversight in 2022.

I do not recommend ANY Alienware computer or laptop. For over 20 years I built my own gaming rigs. A couple years ago I bought an Alienware R11. The bios is so wonky that even unplugging and re-plugging in a cooling fan caused the bios to have a nervous breakdown and fail to reboot without shutting it down and restarting over and over again. Upgrading memory? good luck. You have to go through a slow process that also results in the bios acting crazy preventing the system from booting. I finally just gutted one of my old Cosmos cases and just built a new rig. It fired right up and I have had zero problems. So a month ago I bought a new, in opened box x17 R2. Right off the bat it had problems booting. Then the Alienware command center would not work. Because of Dell software issues (They have known about for over a year but not fixed) you cannot uninstall it and reinstall it. I had so many problems I bought a new M2 drive and installed the operating system from a fresh windows download. I upgraded the memory from 16 to 32 and it took numerous crashes and reboots before it finally accepted the memory. I downloaded all of the Dell drivers and now the command center works. Sort of. I tried using the command center to OC the processor but it crashes, especially on start up. Then somewhere along the line it stops overclocking without any input from me. The only good thing is I can control the 4 fans to keep it cool. Every morning when I start it I usually have to reboot several times before it decides to work. This morning When I started it, it froze the first time. Then the second time it did not recognize the trackball. The third time it froze and the fourth time it finally booted. Alienware bios has some serious issues. Never another Dell or Alienware product for me.

I see you got an exchange in the older comments. was going to recommend that because I have this exact laptop and when pushing it with tripleA games, the temps are more than good. This might just be a case of you losing the silicon lottery. The speakers are trash but for me it's not a big deal since I use a wireless headset.

Was thinking of getting this for vr gaming on my reverb g2, portability issues keep me from getting a desktop. My question is will this struggle on ultra settings running vr? I want the best visuals possible and this seems like quite a beast of a laptop. Thanks for your help

I'm glad you're trying an exchange. You had some outlier results in my opinion. These machines do run hot though but they also perform well. They are made to boost cpu speeds based on temps. The intel chips create more heat as they boost compared to AMD which is the real cause of the heat issue more than the laptop design. Intel chips are made to run hot so I think they expect them to throttle when they are being used hard. The only manufactures not hitting thermal throttling seem to be the ones that aren't giving them full power. Dell is trying to improve performance while simultaneously making it thinner to appeal to a wider audience. I get that and these are performing at the top of the gaming pc market right now so hopefully you have better luck next time

    1. i9s run hot.
    2. The element 31 paste that they give out with the laptop goes bad after a year. This is a legitimate negative, but I’ve been told that most performance laptops will need to have their thermal paste replaced once a year anyways. Sounds like your thermal past was dried out from the get go. That’s why you get a year of free support. They will come to your house and replace it.
    3. This laptop has a custom cooling solution that is better than most laptop solutions. It has 4 dedicated fans and two separate cooling pipe systems to separate the cpu and gpu cooling systems.
    4. The Alienware command center is not great. I run my fans at full speed all the time. Somehow I managed to set my fan speeds at max and uninstall Alienware command center, and now I don’t have to worry about it.
    5. Who isn’t using a headset for basically any laptop work? Gaming, video editing, etc. also, get it replaced. You have a free year of support. It’s not hard to call them and have them set up a time to replace it. It’s not great that your laptop came with this many problems out of the box, but this is a single case out of the thousands of laptops that they made. They probably need to improve their qa.

In addition to the ports on the back, the bright blue lighting on the back makes it almost impossible to see them without a flashlight. VERY inconvenient.

I regret every single penny spent on this laptop.
My battery port literally burned. Which is scary, because of the high temperatures the laptop runs and it means it can happen again.
Then I went to the Alienware support 30 days ago. They don't care at all for you. Long story short: basically Im waiting until now for the repair which is supposed to be this week. But who knows, it was supposed to be last week as wel, and the week before.
I would get my money back right now if it was possible.

That’s unheard of! What a shame! Please keep pushing them. DELL can have good customer service, once you get more verbally active with them.
Say something lile: „the device does not function properly, nor does it perform as advertised“ I’m not happy at all and i want a full refund.

Just buy the I5 of ruziën version and no bigger gpu than Gtx 3050 / 3060 because such high end hardware isn’t made for compact builds. Not only in Alienware also any other laptop…

My area 51 r2 was not working properly and thermal throtteling. Than when i opened it the screws were not tightened enough. So just check it and if they are not than make it tighter. The vapor chamber screws i am talking about. They where loosing way too much air so just try it.

I have the M15-R6 and R7 and the X-Series was always my utmost desire to have but I can't understand why are you so horrible in your review. Alienware laptop and desktop which I have both are so amazing much and much better than any competitor out there. For me who owns Area51-R5, M15-R6 and R7, Alienware is the best, specially the one you are reviewing now, its faster than M1 mac. BUT anyway, somebody must have paid for this review. It doesn't make any sense to me. THUMBs down for me.

      I appreciate your view.
But just because you made good experiences with this machine it does not mean that DELL/Alienware make always good product.
I had !three! Laptops and everyone of those was badly assembled and/or with broken screen, missing inner parts and bad performances.
Thats what I have to say.
