      I have been on both sides of a situation like that scene. The first time I watched this movie all I could do was yell at Will to stop being such an idiot. Those of us with similar trauma as Will immediately see what he's doing and just hold out hope that he won't.

    Thank you both for reacting to this movie!
    Robin Williams did indeed start out as a comedian, and comedic actor. The first I remember seeing of him was in the sitcom "Mork and Mindy", in which he played the part of a goofy alien visitor to our world. I still think back on that role of his very fondly, and love him in this role.
    Williams did a fair bit of stand-up comedy back in the day, as well. I saw a few of his performances for Comic Relief, a semi-regular fundraising event to fight poverty.

    I want you guys to know Will didn't really have brothers, he was lying to her to keep her from knowing anything real about himself. I'm only commenting this just in case it was not something you figured out on the first view. Its truly one of those movies it takes several views to catch everything that's going on in the characters' experiences.

      Or in the case of the second proof in the movie, i watched a youtube video explaining how to do it, and it really wasnt hard after hearing it explained, it basically says that there are only a certain number of unique ways to connect a number of dots in a certain way, and you have to draw every one to prove it, thats what he was drawing on the board when the proffesor caught him

    People who are abused and traumatized often deliberately fail and under-achieve. Abusers often tell their victims ''look you turned out ok so it couldn't have been that bad.'' Success in their minds validates the abuser and the horrors suffered by them. It's a vicious cycle. Victims also blame themselves no matter how irrational they know that is ''I must have done something to deserve this''

      @@TylerWx They didn't write for 10 years after making this movie, that's how much effort and energy they poured into the script. It took them 3 years to get most of it done, in-between acting and traveling around LA for auditions, and it still had to be punched up by 2+ other writers to get it across the goalline. Good writing is hard. Plus, they did write a couple of scripts afterwards, separately and together, when they stopped acting at a breakneck speed and started to have families.

    That shot of Robin's face @ 29:21 Pure cinematic gold. The love, the kindness, the empathy, the sheer love for fellow man all reflected in those eyes, caught on camera forever. This was part of Robin's gift to us in this world. He was truly an amazing spirit and loved people. When I saw this movie in theatres for the first time, this scene broke me. I don't tear up at movies, but this was magically powerful moment in movie history. RIP Robin.

  • @PowerDiva
    @PowerDiva ปีที่แล้ว +47

    When kids are abused their whole life.. they grow up not understanding that they don't deserve it. Will was abandoned by his parents and then had foster parents who abused him. So he grew up thinking he wasn't worth anything and that he somehow deserved that abuse. This happens to so many people in those situations, unfortunately.
    Shawn (Robin Williams) recognized this as a counselor and he knew how to get through to him. He knew that before he could move forward and do anything with his life... he had to face the past and understand that it wasn't his fault. He had to learn that he has a right to be happy like everyone else. Because until he learns that, he will always be his own worst enemy.

    • @ShadowyFox_86
      @ShadowyFox_86 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Logically, intellectually kids who are abused may understand that it's not their fault. Trauma hits on emotions more than intellect. No amount of intellectually knowing it will heal wounds that are emotional. That scene is a perfect example of it.

    Thank you, thank you so very much to my two favorite reactors for watching this excellent film!! Robin Williams (I miss him SO much) won a very well deserved Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for this movie and this is his best performance. Matt and Ben won the Best Screenplay Oscar. (They have been best friends for years). Another phenomenal dramatic film that Robin Williams starred in also stars Robert DeNiro and directed by Penny Marshall is "Awakenings" from 1990. The film is based on a true story and takes place in 1969. Williams plays Dr. Oliver Sachs and creates an antidote along with his staff to "awaken" patients that have been comatose for years. DeNiro plays Leonard Lowe, the first patient to receive the antidote. The film follows the effects the drug has on the patients in the summer of 1969. The film is quite moving and teaches you about the value of life. DeNiro is excellent as Leonard Lowe but the real star of the film is Robin Williams. He really shows a deep vulnerability here in his performance and it shows how incredible he is an actor. I truly hope you react to this movie someday. You will really like it.

He had the documentation to prove that he and Affleck are the writers of the screenplay which was an original screenplay.

My parents were not there for me emotionally! I struggled scholastically but I was good soccer player! Because of the abuse I struggle with PTSD, anxiety, depression, and abandonment! I've been in counseling for 25 years and it's helping me to come out of my shell and trust people and forgive which is the most important message! When things go wrong in our lives, subconsciously, we almost always believe that, in one way or another, we failed and consequently see it as our fault.
    That`s how society has been programming us for millennia. That`s how at least 90 percent of us function. Without consciously noticing it, we take the blame and bury it deep inside our souls.
    And that`s why this movie resonates with so many people.
    The most profound statement in this is "IT ISN`T YOUR FAULT!". I think if somebody repeatedly addressed the same sentence, with Robin Williams`s conviction at us, we would eventually break down, just like Will.

    Knowing what we know about the internal pain that Robin Williams was dealing with, you can see it in his eyes even in this movie. He was hurting on the inside. I've been there. Hell, I'm still there. It's just that good-hearted people who are hurting on the inside don't like to talk about it, because we don't want to burden anyone else with our pain and sadness. We'd rather suffer than to take the chance at making someone else feel the way we do.

    I can totally relate to BJ's mention of feeling the "It's not your fault" segment. My parents divorced in the late 70s and I was just entering my teens. Divorce then isn't what it is now. If you were known to come from a "broken home", you were ridiculed because it was fairly rare. There were many times I felt that I broke my parents up simply because I felt I may have been a mistake from birth. No proof of that, but it may have been mentioned while I wasn't aware during their arguments. Both sat me down and told me it wasn't my fault, but there's still that thing in my head thinking "maybe".
