  • Boxing match jerry lewis from the movie Sailor Beware (1952)
One of my funniest scenes from this movie.
    This is entertainment.
Little detail: The heavyweight boxer Jerry fights is Eddie Simms (age 42 yrs in 1952)
He was a heavyweight fighter who had 100 pro fights from 1930-1949.
He even fought Joe Louis in 1936.

A lot of people think my eyes are dark green when I wear green or yellow. So his may have been hazel and looked green due to the studio lights. But, eye color not withstanding -- the man was a genius at his craft. There have been performers who have tried to emulate him, but I usually just find them annoying. For some reason, the goofy behavior from Jerry is not only tolerable but extremely funny. This clip of him boxing was amazing and I try as I did, I could not sit there watching and not burst out into a belly aching laugh. It was the moment in the clip, when he started 'throwing' his punches. That got me. How could you not laugh at that?

Brilliant physical comedy, the likes of which Lewis did for decades. No wonder he ended up on painkillers for his back after the thousands of pratfalls he took in nightclubs, and on the big and small screen. And we never saw the falls in rehearsals and multiple takes. He goes down so quickly, it's amazing. This is complete silliness, which is why it made people laugh all around the world. But we all get old and die, as did Jerry Lewis. I feel sorry for performers who came before film and TV, who may have been just as brilliantly funny, but whom no one has been able to experience after they died. We can at least see the greats for as long as we are alive, even if they are gone.

The old movies of Jerry Lewis and Dean Martin are classics. Also like That's My Boy and Scared Stiff. I did see a interview with Jerry Lewis last year, he was not very friendly to the interviewer----maybe if we all get to be in the 90's, we all get grouchy and crotchety. Would like to remember him back in the day.

Loved Jerry Lewis from the first day I watched a movie with him, back in the 50's. Glad he left comedy though. Trying to watch this clip today was painful - I just couldn't make it through. Way too corny today but was fun back in the day. Good man. May he RIP.
