Per Professor Popper: it is not very useful to discuss a concept in isolation. In fact, most concepts can be shown to be contradictory or lead to a paradox.
You should describe the “problem-situation” and then discuss a theory which incorporates that concept.

  • @saiecorp5646

Discussion started in right earnest but later on went haywire. Kushal was on track till he discussed about Bhakti movement as modernity in Hinduism but in trying to elaborate he slipped. To be frank Bhakti movement, too, has stagnated and not evolved further.
We define modernity mostly as how west see it. Physical progress is considered as modernity, for example, when British introduced railways, postal service and telegraphs in india, it is considered as milestone in indian modernity. It was said during that time that india has entered into modern era.
But if you go in history and see, you will find sindhu-saraswati culture, Egyptian culture, babylonian culture, were all quite ahead in science and technology but does that mean they all were modern? Were all these cultures socially modern? I think except Sindhu civilisation all other cultures were not socially conscious .
In moder era what would consider as milestones in modernity 1. No slavery, 2. Socially all are equal irrespective of gender or race 3. Live and let live philosophy
    4. Acceptance of other's rights and freedom. (I am not using word tolerant. Tolerant means I don't accept him but still I live with him)
On all above criteria only Hindus pass. I think this is modernity. Thanx.

We cannot count on manufacturing to turn us into an industrialized country.. low level garment manufacturing and mobile assembly factories is not industrialization.. with more and more automation it will only get tougher.. this is the turn that capitalism has taken.. also the pheonomen of jobless growth.. this is why india is so slow to urbanization compared to other asian countries.. this is the nature of 21 century capitalism and our economic policy should keep this in mind especially when soon we will have the largest population on this planet.. this is a very talked about subject in the field of development economics.. i am not bashing capitalism.. but we need to adopt to the new form that capitalism has taken... Why do we have such a big big big informal manufacturing and informal service sector.. becoz our formal manufacturing sector never actually took off... This is the reason why india has been so slow to urbanize because formal sector jobs were not there to pull people out of villages.. most of our urban people our actually slum dwellers .. most of our cities is just regularized slum colonies that no longer look like a slum.. China model will not work for India as realities have changed..

There are a lot of things we need to correct which have entered into our society due to coloniality. But I feel we can learn a lot of things from the west. Hindutva and Hindu Modernity is just to give a rubber stamp for every thing. After every scientific invention, just stamp it by finding its origin in ancient Indian texts. Atomic energy by fission is there in Indian texts. But about atomic fusion nobody comes out. Once atomic fusion become commercial, some non-scientific art graduate of India will find it in ancient texts.
If atomic fusion is there in our ancient texts, we should build the fusion reactor first in Make in India Program.

We have started well in uplifting living standards of Dalits but have not taken much effort for women empowerment. Women suffered a lot and are still suffering in the male dominated and ruled society.. For example divorce laws are so complicated a woman cannot divorce a misbehaving husband easily. Our society accepts with ease an educated and Working women but doesn't work on adjusting itself accordingly. Our laws and society's norms are not compatible with modernity.

Your effort to qualify the entire spectrum of bhakti movement to RSS and everything in between is so vague and desperate without any tangible outcome/benefit to society. RSS as anti casteism looks and feels like a superficial coating borne out of compulsion rather than a genuine effort to reform society and hence we remain a casteist society even today. The vacuum in right wing intellect is so obvious, we need to accept this fact and make a beginning, by creating space for modernity which cannot be done by enforcing food habits and other things in personal life....the insecurity in Hindu society discourages members from experimenting anything different.... We can go on.......... Our collective failure to industrialize is single biggest crime we have done to ourselves....... The education system........ List goes on..... True modernity can happen only with an open mind, not by issuing diktats

    • @PragyaTGupta

what kind of food habits and other things are the determinants of modernity according to you. and in no way industrialisation in one way is the opening stock of modernisation..I feel that we failed as a nation to universalise the ethics and education which overwhelming got manipulated by so called modern society. RSS is trying to be inclusive you can call it modernisation or coating of compulsion but they are certainly writing a new thought in Hindu thoughts.
