- The original Ace Attorney Trilogy contains some of the best character development and storytelling in any video game. In this video, I take a brief look at the themes of each respective entry, diving into how each case changes Phoenix on his journey to become and Ace Attorney.

One of the reasons case 2-4 is my favorite in the series is how, when Phoenix has to defend Engarde knowing he's guilty, every time he says something, it sounds like he's in terrible pain. He's truly suffering, and the writing made this very clear.

It never occurred to me that aa2 intentionally make players gradually doubt phoenix's clients from the start for the sake of final case til I watch this video! No wonder why they were so annoying. Also you make me finally understand what the title 'justice for all' means for the story. Great analysis!

@@JacksMelancholy literally, I came across this video because every once in a while I just need to revisit AA trilogy/T&T/lore/Godot content. I ‘member watching thru lucahjin’s blind T&T play through just to revisit all those experiences and emotions, esp seeing someone go through it blind. I still haven’t even emotionally recovered enough to move onto the rest of the AA games lol- like clockwork, a few times every year I seem to come back to this trilogy and especially T&T.
From the few AA games I've played, they've always seems like big picture games. Each game is it's own sort of self contained story, but almost always leave stuff unfinished until the next game comes to wrap it up. That could be why Apollo Justice is so divisive. The hand holding he receives isn't too different from the Deus Ex Machina Phoenix receives in his first game. How much would we like Phoenix Wright if he never got any sequels? We'd all say, "Oh, that lawyer game where that guy wins cases by pure luck?".

Mramericantaco: It's most easily read if you think about what it is - a pseudonym. It makes more sense in Japanese: they read as "Irisu Donimu" ("Elise Pseudonym") and "Rarisu Donimu" ("Larry Pseudonym").
In terms of storytelling, I am surprised you didn't notice Rise From the ashes, which is one of the best written cases of all time. I don't know why, but every time someone says Apollo justice was written very poorly I question life. I played the game over 5 times and didn't notice a single plot hole. No, Machi being convicted is not a plot hole, that is one of the stupidest things I've ever heard, the court had full reasons to convict him. If only Turnabout Succession was about an hour longer, I would put Mr. Justice close to Trials and Tribulations, which is also my favourite game of the series.
Fedora The Explorar ~ I purposefully chose not to cover Rise From the Ashes as it was not part of the original trilogy.
It was added to the DS remakes as a precursor to Apollo Justice, introducing Ema Skye and evidence law.
I really enjoy that case, however I wanted to look at the original trilogy in it's original form.
As for my opinion on Apollo Justice, well, I just might make a video about it...
I love Rise From the Ashes! It showed us players the same places yet with different characters and some familiar faces. In my opinion it was...serious. When I first talked to Lana Skye in the detention center I noticed a different aura, as if it was another game. Its a fun and challenging and shocking part of Ace Attorney that would always hold a special place in my heart!
I didn't really like Apollo Justice, since I stopped it after the second case. Trials and Tribulations feels like the end of his story for me. (Though, I was a fan of Dual Destinies.)
Awesome video! Not many players can see so deeply in the game series. How about you do the same video about both Edgewort's spin-offs?

I love the last game, but Godot was such an unforgivable asshole. And I don't know why people defend him just because of his tragic past (like they've learned nothing from the past cases about that not being an excuse for murder). He killed Mia's mother when it could have been easily avoided, and then let Maya and Iris cover for him (which would have gotten Irus executed, and still got her arrested so she and Phoenix couldn't be together), and almost got Maya, Pearl, Phoenix and Iris all killed just because he couldn't swallow his completely misplaced anger. He's second to worst prosecutor only by Manfred - at least Franziska actually helps you at times.
I mean, all prosecutors are a little bit asshole-ish. But Godot... he had been nothing but a dick to Pheonix for no reason - even when Mia stood by him - and then everyone tries to defend his actions. Even Maya, despite it being very clear that if he really wanted to protect her he could have just told them what Dhalia was planning, then Maya could still have her mother and Irus wouldn't be in jail.
He wasn't justified, his actions only made things worse, and everyone else suffered because of him. And yet he gets an emotional send-off with everyone forgiving him and saying what a great guy he is? Fuck him!
I dunno man...it seems like Maya and Pheonix forgave him too like the rest of the fans. Are you saying that this part was a mistake made by the creator.
I would say that Godot was an asshole but a forgiveble one.

The trilogy obviously has the highest quality out of all of the series, but I dont mind some other games either. I guess I'm just so obsessed with Ace Attorney that any other content also seems great to me?
This is oddly written just like Persona 4 and 5. A Central theme with characters (Or social links) That revolve around the theme with various conflicts.
Uh. Pretty sure this is fairly common. You could say this about many video games and stories.

Sorry this is so late, for some dumb reason you weren't on my sub feed and only saw your vid through someone else sending it. Anyway I really loved the video a lot. Although ace attorney is one social commentary of the japanese law system it's nice knowing someone else noticed the themes of the game.
I think T&T in example is a game with many themes and pulls it all off pretty perfectly. Such as I always saw it as a game that shows love & lost. Not only every single case revolves around a relationship, but form some sort of lost from it.
Hell, even the blue badger has a girl by his side.
All characters have to deal with losing someone they love, and how they operate dealing with that. Such as in the beggining of the game phoenix was in denial of his sweet dalhia was a killer. Then grew up over the time of losing someone like that going full circle learning about Iris and able to push forward as something in the past.
It's what makes phoenix the better man then godot, cause godot (Which I learn is pronounce Go Doe cause "DeiGO ArmanDO" but I'll still always add the t) who couldn't get pass his grief over mia death and ate himself up over that for all his actions blaming others that isn't himself. For something that isn't even his fault.
There is a lot more of things connecting with this theme of love and lost but I kinda want to save that for another day but I hope that gives you the jiss of what I was saying. It connects with the amazing name of "Trials and Tribulations".
I'm interested hearing your opinion on the other games cause I feel AJ hit the themes perfectly well but some parts of it's executions was a bit flawed. Plus DD themes just hurt me internally... And SoJ themes kinda is just "lol revolution, you can revolt against bad things" without a lick of honest reflection of the player how they can take it to their day to day life.
I'm never ashame to say that T&T did change myself on viewing things that I feel the 3DS series and the AAI series sorta miss the mark of capturing, (and it doesn't help I'm not the biggest fan of the cases either even if SoJ is a full guilty pleasure to me).

Godot is TECHNICALLY pronounced “Go-dough” but I say “Go-Dot” because it just sounds right to me.
Even though Recipe for Turnabout ended up in Trials and Tribulations, it was actually made for Justice For All, as Episode 4 (Farewell, My Turnabout being Episode 5).
(Wish they removed Big Top instead. I don't hate Big Top, but JFA would be much better if it had a great episode like Recipe for Turnabout in its place)

I’m currently playing through Dual Destinies after finishing Apollo Justice (no spoilers please). I find both have been pretty good, but haven’t gripped me in the way some of the original trilogy could. So far, I also find Athena much more compelling than Apollo, and her psychological approach is, I think, a significantly stronger concept to enhance the story and gameplay a la Maya’s spirit training and history than Apollo’s bracelet gimmick. But I know she’s not in the next one which I think is a real shame, especially because I know Apollo is. I think the biggest flaw with the new games is that they feel...I almost wanna say “unfocused”. Like they’re not 100% sure which story they want to tell. That said, I really think there’s potential, but they need to reignite that focus. My preference would be to write Apollo out, and focus on Athena’s journey to being an Ace Attorney as Phoenix’s mentee (especially since he specifically recruited her himself to teach her, unlike with Apollo where he kind of poached him after the whole betrayal from his mentor), and allowing her to strike up a sort of sisterhood with Trucy. But that’s just my personal view and preference, no one needs to agree.
Howdy. I'm not going to spoil anything, but you said that you know that Athena isn't in Spirit of Justice, but she is in it. She doesn't take a protagonist role, but she serves as Apollo's assistant instead of Trucy in the game.

Bro, I havent even started Dual Destinies yet and I agree. I played AJ and took a break to play investigations (personally, I'm having a great time with it, almost finished with AA1 and am excited to play Prosecutor's Path soon) because AJ:AA felt so disorienting to me in terms of what it wanted to focus on. To me, it gave us a bit of everything and had great potential, but spread itself so thin with plot points and characters. I've looked into DD a bit and I can tell that I will most likely agree that it will continue on with its more "unfocused" writing when I get there.
Wow, in super late to this video (and to the video game series in general, I got into it during late 2019. I mean, the first game came out 6 years before I was born, can you blame me?), but this is great. I haven't found a video like this on TH-cam so I have nothing to compare it to, but your analysis is absolutely outstanding and you pointed out many things that I didn't even notice/realize. ? Your take on Turnabout Goodbyes is pretty weird imo. Saying that Phoenix from the first case "wouldn't dare touch" a case like this is a bit excessive imo, considering he literally only became a lawyer as a way to get close to Edgeworth again; and not only is there an actual deus ex machina in that case (Mia appears to suggest the solution to Phoenix, even if she wasn't channeled by Maya), it's the one that stood out the most to me when playing it, because it slightly dampened the impact of the greatest climax in the game. Not that I disagree with your overall point about Phoenix growing during the course of the game and the trilogy, but I think you’re looking at some aspects of Turnabout Goodbyes in a completely opposite way than I am.
EDIT: Your take on Trials and Tribulations is excellent though
Perhaps I can elaborate.
In both case 1 and case 2, Phoenix ultimately gives up fighting and were it not for the intervention of Mia, affairs would’ve ended there.
I suppose what I was trying to say is that I couldn’t see Phoenix prior to his experiences in cases 1 through 3 being able to defend Edgeworth against Von Karma for any longer than a cross examination or two. I don’t doubt he’d try, though.

There's also the fact that, while I definitely wouldn't go as far as to say that Phoenix won the case in Turnabout Goodbyes on his own, he and Maya were for sure left with a lot less guidance from Mia there. So I think you make a good argument. Sorry if I came across as too abrasive in my comment btw - I'm not sure if I did, but just in case, that wasn't my intention

Case five, while being excellent, is crafted to connect the original trilogy to Apollo Justice.
I didn’t feel it connected with the other four cases and their themes, but I’d certainly enjoy covering it someday!

They should have ended Phoenix's arc in T&T and give the new spotlight for Apollo. I hate Phoenix in AJ because how much they have destroyed his previous character development and made him an a$$hole would forge evidence to get revenge on Kristoph and then once again ruined his previous character development in DD and SOJ by making him a complete dumba$$
