This duology was so good that I hope they make more historic Ace Attorney games like this one. I like Phoenix and friends, but their story is just spinning its wheels.

You’re not wrong. There’s so much more potential for the series, but Capcom are dead set on having things revolve around Mr. Naruhodo and company. They typically cite poor sails of Investigations as their reasoning, but I believe they could kickstart a new series with the same premise.

I didn't mind the pacing for two reasons.
1: The games are sold together this time, so I didn't mind them being two halves of a single game, more than 2 individual games. Japanese fans would've been justifiedly shocked/angry when the original games came out separately tho.
2: The mysteries are withhold, but they do so, more to give the information when it's going to be relevant. Like you say, there's a lot of info to unpack, so giving pieces of reveals just before they become clues and evidence helps you not forget them and also create a longer thread of different interpretations of the actual answer that wouldn't be able to exist if they were revealed all at once.
I might be more accostumed to longer visual novels than others (I declare Umineko guilty of this), but I think it there is not much filler text, and everything helps you move forward with excitement.
... Also the Herlock hologram is weird as heck, but I forgive it a little because the solution of the mystery has already happened in the hands of the player, and the obstacle was simply how to prosecute a man literally above the law at the time... At least that's been faster than a similar situation in Investigations.

    • @JacksMelancholy
      @JacksMelancholy  ปีที่แล้ว +20

It is a lot better being able to play them back to back. I also agree that keeping the mysteries vague means having more time to theorize and wonder what the truth is.
I’ll also concede that the great majority of dialogue progresses matters; I just felt like the speed of said progress could’ve been taken up a notch. You’re right about Herlock too.
      Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

I'll just go ahead and say that these two games are really the only reason why I continue to seek out ace attorney content. The trilogy was good, and entertaining, but always left feeling wanting. It felt like I was watching a good seasonal TV show that people were kind of overanalysing. And with its sequels came a lot of mixed feelings. Ultimately, I felt like this was a series doomed to the back of my mind, so I never had any strong feelings about it.
Then I played Adventures. I was pleasantly surprised with how character focused it was, and the boring moments quickly faded from my memory. I remember distinctly feeling like it was a satisfying bittersweet ending, even if the second game never came out. It was a nice story about a man living up to the memory of his deceased best friend, and the friends and encouragement he gets along the way shapes who he is. I genuinely thoughnit was as good as Ace Attorney could get.
Playing Resolve, I though it was great. Wowed by the big twists, and mesmerised by the music once more. As well as those sweet in engine cutscenes.
but otherwise I though it was a great follow-up to the trilogy on a technical level. Pretty much everything got an upgrade here, even down to the character writing, so I concluded that it was better, bought it for my friend and left it at that.
Then we played it together. and I started to see. little details jumping out, the way certain pieces of information are given to the player, the timing of animations, subtle facial expressions given wordlessly, whole new character sub-arcs appearing before my eyes, narrative parallels and messages. Before i knew it, I was in love with these games. And I've been shilling them ever since.
They're certainly not for everybody, but these games are my muses. So classy, so refined, such a genuine sense of grandeur and scope unlike anything the series has seen. As well as touch of intimacy that the series really needed for that deep connection. Making the office in to a home, and making the main characters flatmates is just the most genius thing.
P.S. The grape juice thing is that it's Takumi's (the writer/director/creator) favorite drink. it was always supposed to be grape juice. No I don't have a source for this make of it what you will.

The main characters' names (aside from Sholmes and Iris) stayed the same, but most of the side characters were renamed in the classic Ace Attorney style to have punny names that work in English. Even the Japanese characters were renamed. For example, Haori Murasame was renamed to Rei Membami, which is supposed to be a play on the English "remember me." Looking through the wiki (or even the OST albums, if you have the pre-Chronicles ones) will reveal most side characters had completely different names in the Japanese version. The main exception to this rule are characters like Enoch Drebber or John Garrideb - they're the same in both versions because they're named after characters from the Sherlock Holmes stories.

You’re quite right too. I considered bringing up some of the changes in my intro, but decided to say “practically the same” so that the video wouldn’t be any longer than it already is, ha ha.

From a business standpoint the idea of having these two games separated doesn't make sense, but it doesn't always have to be that way. The emotional payoff that was built up from DGS 1 in DGS 2 is amazing.

I know everyone will tear me to shreds just for saying this, but this is exactly the reason why it's DGS1 and 2 that I deem the best in the series.
GK1 is fantastic, but even its characters are very simple. Extremely fun, but undeniably simple. It's just a very fun game focusing on carefully constructed mysteries with satisfying conclusions and great case logic.
GS5 is great mainly because its characters are largely well written. However, I feel that DGS characters are more down to earth than GS5's cast, and this actually reminds me of the Fire Emblem characters of old, pre Awakening.

This year I could finish the great ace attorney chronicles, giving it the close of the fully saga.
I think the same as you, this game is best to play both together, I did it and I finished it crying, now is one of my favourite ace attorney games with Trials and Tribulations.

Yeah these games suffer a bit from pacing i totally get that. The last case in particular, i felt like the conclusion got so drown out for so long than immediately did a 180% and Queen of England showed up out of nowhere
That being said, the characters are amazing, the visuals are very good, the story and mistery resolutions are intriguing, the soundtrack is great, and i just love most of the gameplay addictions, SPECIALLY the jury system is very fun to interact too.
It's a great duology and I'm happy they translated it in a nice package too

I have just finished the game (the collection) and i had a blast. Some cases dragged a bit (1-1, 1-2, 2-2), some clues presentations are too strict (just pick this when i say) and the pursue mechanic is too guided with the sound notification. Also, sholmes spend too much time teaching us logic. His last dance of deduction is epic (the previous one too) but there was a bit too much of hand holding. The animations, ost and the plot are amazing. One note about 2-4 and 2-5: they came up with a new game mechanic (it is true that is another cross-examination but whatever) in court with the "Judicial Findings" and it was a bit of a bummer when it was not used in the last 2 cases.
    SPOILERS
I think it would have been cool if Mael Stronghart just declares Barok guilty and you use your right to interrogate him (given the 6 ignited fires on the jurors seats). Then Stronghart has to explain why he consider the defendant guilty and you have to use his arguments against him like usual.

It still feels a bit embarrassing to admit that it took me 3 years to finish The Great Ace Attorney and the fact I've finished it less than a week ago.. Personally it felt so nice to see new characters, and best of all new characters in a new setting. I loved each case maybe some less than others but I wouldn't call any of them "horrible" unlike other cases in the other games... The story of the first game kept me enthralled to continue onto the second game until I got burnt out due to other things and stopped playing, I'm glad to have finally finished the game though!

@@JacksMelancholy There is a game that ends like this: you reach the final level, fight against the "Very Definitive Final Boss", you win but just at the "Eleventh Hour", "It Was Not Even My Final Form" and "Now, You Lose". Then proceeds to fade to black and "To Continue" in the next game. Susprisingly, the game released 1 year later. So yeah it can be a lot worse.

TBH there are some things that really urk me whenever I play and replay TGAA Chronecles and that's why I still prefere Investigations 2. In fact, let's speedrun through all the problems I have with it.
(1)Case 1 could've been trimmed down, (2)I didn't like the fact Sherlock willingly and knowingly withheld evidence that would have proven beyond all doubt that Pavlova was Kazuma's attacker instantly, (3)I feel like Magnus could have been a better candidate for duoligy final boss matrial (The password for Magnus's coat is Proffesor and so it would have been cool Magnus knew the truth surounding the Proffesor serial killings and used it to blackmail Mael), (4)Roly confessing that he moved the body but then you the player still needing to prove why he did it was completely unnessary, (5)proving that the peep-hole was made after Ashley left the shop should have been enough to get Gina declaired not guilty as the gun would have been too big for her to be able to slide underneath the door and there is no way that the Skulkin bros would lie for Ashley again by testifying that Gina briefly unlocked and opened the door in order to get rid of the gun, (6)Raitan did not need to admit that he stabbed Brett in order to argue that he didn't kill her due the real cause of death being poison, (7)the dog collar is never used in the final boss fight in order to prove that Genshin was innocent all along, (8)the boss fight against Sithe was really dumb, the red-headed league could have been cut from the game as it doesn't matter what Vigil's exact alibi is, (9)Jigoku could have just denied having anything to do with the assassin exchange as the telegram was obtained without a warrent and so could have claimed that he killed Gregson out of self defence, (10)Mael just admitting that Klint is the Proffesor even though our heroes didn't have the evidence at the time in order to prove it was really dumb and (11)Holo-Sholmes should have been cut and instead have it so that Ryunosuke is able to convince the gallary members to turn on Mael.

I found The Great Ace Attorney enjoyable as a whole, but I can't shake the feeling that it's a very inconsistent experience.
The setting feels very small due to recycled assets and very little explorable locations (London especially, half of the cases take place in the Garridebs' building or Baker Street); the XIXth century time period isn't even taken advantage of aside from a few cases where the lack of scientific knowledge (fingerprinting especially) really puts Ryunosuke in a bad spot, and Sholmes and Iris' inventions often break the setting, being more advanced than the tools Phoenix, Apollo and co. would make use of in the future.
The characters are generally very well written as per usual, and Takumi hits it out of the park with Ryunosuke, the most dynamic protagonist so far. I found it strange that you found him static, as no game before Adventures had really put this much focus into the main character. Ryu's journey in the first game is articulated quite well through all of its five cases, and the moment where he starts to feel like a lawyer in case 4 is a truly exciting and triumphant one.
The rest of the cast is quite good, as Susato is a competent aide that has a unique dynamic with Ryu and Kazuma, Van Zieks is an intimidating rival (even if he sticks way too much to Edgeworth's template), Gina LeStrade is effective if a bit predictable, Kazuma is a refreshing take on a mentor (finally a "good guy" that gets to be angry for once!) and Gregson is a character with clear allegiances that makes an immediate impact.
I'm not very fond of Herlock and Iris, though. The former doesn't strike the balance between goofy and serious as well as someone as Hobo Phoenix does in Apollo Justice, for example, and he's hard to take seriously as a result. Even after two games I don't believe he's that smart, and he's quite the static character, too. I think that Yamazaki has done this kind of character too many times for Takumi's take on it to be that strong.
Iris' problem in my eyes is that she never feels like a child, unlike Pearl from the Trilogy, and that she's generally too unimportant for me to really care about.
I do think that most of these characters get the short end of the stick in Resolve, though. That game has little charater focus outside of case 2 and Susato gets thrown in the dust bin very quickly, and even Ryunosuke disappears in the final cases (one of them is named after him).
The secondary characters tend to fade into the background this time, too, aside from case 1-2, the Kokoro cases and Daley Vigil from 2-4.
This is one of the two problems I have with this duology.
The first one is the one I mentioned: while Adventures tries to make something new with the series' formula (for the first time since 2007...) and puts a lot of focus on the characters, the second game is as traditional as it gets and follow the same "interconnected plot" structure that has been done and re-done ever since Trials and Tribulations, with the political intrigue nonsense of Yamazaki's games.
The five case structure and the trials aren't built for this stuff, it steals the spotlight from the characters and often doesn't even make for satisfying resolutions.
I don't think that the political themes are done especially well, either. While the duology nails other themes better than ever (especially the meaning of trusting your client), those about the nature of law have never been done better than Rise From The Ashes and Turnabout Succession to an extent. That's why the final villain (once again impossible to catch by regular means, why didn't the jury factor into his defeat?) is über lame, and his actions don't make much sense either.
The second issue I found is the lack of difficulty and complexity of the cases. This is a problem that started in Apollo Justice to an extent, but became glaring in the 3ds games. The game just handholds you and doesn't let you figure out the details of the cases for yourself. There's too many times when Ryu's trapped in a corner and Susato, Sholmes, Iris or someone else comes to the rescue and robs you of the satisfaction of figuring out the case.
I also felt that the duology borrows way too much from the Trilogy and Apollo Justice for its cases and plot elements. It takes more from the latter than I expected, to be honest.
To summarize, I'd say that this duology is a good addition to the franchise with very high peaks; even if it's quite messy and some of its elements are executed worse than other games in the series, it offers a lot of great moments, too, and some aspects are the best they're ever been.
I do wish that the series would steer back its focus to its characters and the mysteries of the cases and lower the stakes from the excalation that we've seen over the years.

You’re right that they could have explored a lot more of the setting.
Perhaps I wasn’t clear: I didn’t feel Ryunosuke was static per se, but more so that his good nature was a given from the get go. He certainly honed his skills as a lawyer over the course of his adventure.
Hobo Phoenix certainly struck a better balance of being serious and appearing to be nonchalant, however I got where the game was coming from making Herlock eccentric.
The political themes were certainly simplified to the point where their nuances became a little lost, but I think the game did that intentionally to not make things so complicated.
I’m also not a fan of villains who even when you can objectively prove are in the wrong, have some way of being untouchable, requiring a deus ex machina to resolve matters.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts.

@@JacksMelancholy Maybe I shouldn’t have put Sholmes in the same sentence as Iris, as I think he leaves a much stronger impression than her. He’s very funny and the air of mystery around him works for a first playthrough, but I wish he was a bit less wacky or at least show his intelligence a bit more frequently. I feel Takumi waited for the sequel to explore Sholmes and Van Zieks.
I think I chose the wrong set of words to describe the games’ themes. I used “political themes” to talk about the critique of the justice system and the Reaper, and I do think it’s overdone at this point.
The duology also explores the problems of classism and inequality and I think it’s done very well, with the Garridebs having to fake having a maid to keep their status, Magnus McGilded having power over the poor like Gina LeStrade and the Milvertons, Graydon being corrupted by the poverty and broken family of his childhood, Shamspeare needing to pay for gas et cetera.
Xenophobia is explored, too, and I think it’s done pretty well with mr. Natsume in case 1-4 being terrified of the outside world.
The resolution for Van Zieks’ racism is a bit hokey, but at least it’s based on personal relationships trumping prejudice.
So when I mentioned “political themes” I meant only the ones related to -Damon Ga- Stronghart’s actions.

@@nicoloenricorimoldi7425 I agree with your observations. The inequality is something I didn’t pick up on in my in my analysis and I’m glad you pointed it out.

I think some of my disappointment with this game how much Ive seen it claimed that these are the best in the series when I just can't agree. I agree that the pacing issues of these games sometimes get in the way of enjoying what is a pretty great narrative. I also tried to get somebody into the series recently and while it leaves a great first impression they later dropped the game due to the pacing of the second case. Also while I think all these characters are excellent and I loved what they did to replicate the period of time it is set, I just personally prefer the current cast and setting.
There were two games I waited for so long for that came out that day, and while Neo the world ends with you lived up to pretty much every expectation I had for a sequel to one of my all time favorite games, Great ace attorney initially lost me because of how it's paced. It's mostly worth it, especially in the second game when all the time you've spent with the characters really makes a lot of the twists and turns of the plot have impact and a conclusion that while kinda ridiculous has a satisfaction I haven't felt with the series since trials and tribulations. But the overall experience is dragged down a bit by the pacing and the times it sacrifices the players ability to think because it wants to keep the drama up. The amount of times I was getting excited to look through the evidence and solve puzzles etc for the game to just outright tell me the answer was annoying, especially when I was led to believe this series handled that better than 5 & 6. The game actually catches you off guard when you are all of a sudden presented with a problem you have to answer yourself making it harder than it would have been if you were solving the case yourself the whole time.
Still I really like these games and I'm glad to finally have them officially released, but more than ever I just really want to see ace attorney 7 and hope that it's a strong new direction for the series.

Fun fact in regards to the localization:
In this game, it kind of breaks the world of ace attorney, but it is still quite ok.
Nevertheless, in Ace attorney Spirit of justice, the localization will bite them in the butt. Because, *spoiler alert*, the question of the creator orb is whether it's been made in the kingdom of Khura'in, or in Japan (they even explicitly say this a couple of times).
Implying that the village of Kurain is in Japan.
This would mean that since Ace attorney 1 implies it's in California, somehow you can travel from California to Japan by bus in 2 hours.

Ah, you’re right. Damn, I always just assumed that since the main trio all practiced as lawyers, they were adults. Big yikes, ha ha.
As a fictional anime character, her design is hella cute, though.
